Joe Cole looks set to be fit in time for the start of Liverpool’s Premier League season this weekend after returning to training after his hamstring injury.

The former England midfielder picked up the knock during the Europa League tie with Gomel in Belarus, but resumed training with the first-team squad last week and is expected to be in contention in time for Saturday's trip to West Brom.

Cole said: 'I trained on Thursday for the first time after the injury and it feels good.

'It’s good to be back around the squad and available for selection again. I’ve only missed two weeks, so I feel good fitness-wise as we had a good long pre-season and I just need some games now.

'It was frustrating having to come off in the first game of the season but that’s one of those things you have to deal with as a footballer. There’s never a good time to get injured but luckily it wasn’t a major thing and I’m back now raring to go and raring to be part of the team.

'I’ve had a good pre-season. I’ve trained really well and the training was really intense. I really enjoyed the games we played in and playing at Fenway Park was great. I enjoyed the pre-season. It does what it says on the tin – it gets you fit and that’s the main thing.’

Meanwhile, Rodgers says is still looking to bolster Liverpool's squad before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month

The Northern Irishman has been relatively sedate in his dealings since taking over at Anfield at the start of the summer, adding just Joe Allen and Fabio Borini to his squad.

Two signings are some way away from last summer's big-spending spree under Kenny Dalglish, but Rodgers has not given up hope of adding more new faces before the August 31 deadline.

He said: 'There has been contact and communication with the clubs. The team of people behind myself are working very, very hard in relation to those targets.

'We hope that within the next number of weeks those will bear fruit.

'The work has been continual right the way through to try and get in players that fit the profile of Liverpool and the team. Like I say, I would hope there would be a couple more signings before the end of August.'

While Anfield's arrivals lounge has not been too busy this summer, a number of players, including Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt, have gone through departures.

Consequently, Rodgers has a slimmer squad than the one he inherited and has not ruled out the prospect of more players heading for pastures new.

He added: 'We obviously haven't brought in too many players, but there are some players that have gone out for a number of reasons.

'There is still a lot of work to do within the group and there will probably be more changes between now and the end of August in terms of ins and outs.

'Come the end of August when everyone is here, we can be real focused and be together, and start on the journey to hopefully having a real good campaign.'

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Swansea midfielder Joe Allen.

The midfielder was at Anfield on Thursday night to watch the Reds' 3-0 Europa League third qualifying round second leg win over FC Gomel.

And, after Reds manager Brendan Rodgers revealed the move was 'imminent', the 22-year-old has now passed a medical to seal his switch to the Merseyside giants.

Allen told his new club's official website: 'I feel incredible.

'Everyone knows the history of this club, it's a massive club, and I'm delighted to have joined.

'The passion that people here have for football is something I share and I want to be part of that.

'I'm looking forward to being part of some great years ahead for Liverpool.'

Rodgers said: 'I'm absolutely delighted Joe has made the decision to come with us on this journey.

'He is a player whose profile will fit perfectly with the ideas of this group.

'His ability to control and dominate the ball is an important ingredient in our attempt to gain success on the field.

'Joe has had a fantastic education at
Swansea and will now begin the next chapter in his exciting career, and
I wish him all the very best in what I'm sure will be a long and
distinguished career here at Liverpool.'

Allen had held meetings this week with
chairman Huw Jenkins and new manager Michael Laudrup after returning
from Olympic duty and spelled out his desire to leave for Anfield.

Rodgers had agreed not to poach any
Swansea players for 12 months upon leaving the club in June, but it is
understood that clause was made once the Liverpool
manager made an offer that met the release fee in a player's contract.

The move smashes Swansea's previous record fee for
the sale of a player – Jason Scotland's 2million move to Wigan in June
2009 – and Swansea have earmarked a large slice of the cash for Bolton
midfielder Mark Davies.

The club last week failed with a bid
in the region of 4m for the 24-year-old, but are likely to return with a
5m offer in the next 48 hours. Bolton are holding out for 6m.

Brendan Rodgers loves Luis Suarez"s style of play

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has hailed Luis Suarez for his superb display against FC Gomel in the Reds' 3-0 Europa League qualifying victory on Thursday night.

The Uruguayan was on top form, showing why Rodgers was so delighted the South American signed a long-term contract extension earlier in August.

'Luis is an incredible player,' said the Liverpool boss. 'He has come back to us and looked great in training.

'He is so creative in the box but he also presses very well when he doesn't have the ball.

'He is the type of player I love. He is in love with football. He has such passion for the game.

'His combination work with Steven Gerrard and Fabio Borini was excellent.'

Rodgers' first signing, Fabio Borini, got off to the best possible start by marking his home debut with a first-half goal to set Liverpool on their way to an easy victory that sealed their place in Friday's final qualifying round draw.

'It is important for any striker to score because they are judged on their goals,' explained the boss.

'But I brought him here because I know he can score. He is only 21 and has a lot of improvement left in him.

'But with his work-rate and his ability on the ball I think he will fit in very well to our team.'

Skipper Steven Gerrard grabbed a second, with Suarez the architect.

Glen Johnson wrapped up the scoring in a game in which Manchester City target Daniel Agger completed the full 90 minutes.

'There is nothing more to add on Daniel,' said Rodgers.

'I like to play from behind. That is Daniel's game, building from the back and stepping up with the ball and making passes.

'You saw his commitment to the cause tonight.

'We don't want to sell him. He is a very important player for me and it will remain that way.'

New signing Fabio Borini and captain Steve Gerrard scored in the first-half as Liverpool eased their way into the Europa League play-offs.

New boss Brendan Rodgers received a warm welcome from the Kop before his first competitive home game in charge.

And Liverpool, leading 1-0 from the first leg of the third qualifying round tie, doubled their advantage with Borini's 21st minute strike before Gerrard put the result beyond doubt by scoring his 150th goal for the Reds just before half-time.

Defender Glen Johnson added a third in the 72nd minute.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is
ready to return to former club Swansea City to sign Wales defender
Ashley Williams as Daniel Agger is being targeted by Manchester City.

Fantasy football 2012

Rodgers, who would also like to sign
Swansea's GB Olympic star Joe Allen before the end of the transfer
window, is bracing himself for Agger's departure.

The Denmark defender has reached the
final two years of his contract and has given no encouragement to the
club to extend his deal.

He did not play in the club's Europa League tie in Belarus on Thursday night. Manchester City have seen two offers for Agger rejected but a third bid of 20million is likely to tempt owner John W Henry to sell.

Barcelona have also put Agger on a shortlist of defenders wanted at the Nou Camp but their priority is Arsenal's Alex Song.

Rodgers promised not to upset Swansea when he left them for Anfield at the end of last season, but that has not stopped his interest in a 10m deal for Allen, which he hopes to complete once the Olympic Games are over.

The former Chelsea coach is also a big fan of 28-year-old Williams, who has won 33 Wales caps and been a commanding presence in Swansea's rise from the Championship to Premier League mid-table.

Liverpool are under no pressure to sell Agger but will not stand in his way if City make a third, big bid.

Rogers faces a tough decision whether to include 35m record signing Andy Carroll for the club's Europa League game against Gomel at Anfield on Thursday.

West Ham have agreed a 17m package to take Carroll on loan next season ahead of a permanent move but the England striker is waiting for hometown club Newcastle United to make a move.

Liverpool will have to wait until later this year for new head of scouting and replacement David Fallows to take over.

Fallows is currently on six months gardening leave from Manchester City.

Joe Cole injury not serious, says Brendan Rodgers

Rodgers denies injury is serious as Cole subbed with hamstring complaint

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has played down Joe Cole's injury after the playmaker was substituted during the Reds' 1-0 Europa League third qualifying round victory over Gomel.

Cole, who spent last season on loan at Lille, lasted just 23 minutes before he was replaced by 17-year-old Raheem Sterling at the Central Stadion in Belarus.

'Joe just felt his hamstring a little bit,' Rodgers said. 'I don't think it is totally pulled and it was just a little bit of tightness so we had to take him off.

'It disrupted our plans a little bit but it was better to have him come off rather than risk injury.'

Glen Johnson was replaced by Martin Kelly just one minute into the start of the second period, but Rodgers said that was a tactical move and not forced upon him.

'Glen was only scheduled to play 45 minutes anyway so he was taken off as planned,' he added.

Stewart Downing's second half strike meant Rodgers' first competitive game in charge of Liverpool ended with victory, and the former Swansea boss was pleased with what he saw.

'It will take time until Liverpool start playing the way Swansea did last season (tactically),' he said. 'Actually the way you play depends on the players you have.

'As for today I saw two things which were very important for me, I saw desire and commitment. I am very grateful to my players for a good game.

'Obviously it was a serious test of the players' fitness and I am really happy with the result.

'This was my first competitive game in charge of Liverpool and for me it didn't really matter whether the game was played in Belarus or Brazil as I am really honoured to manage this side.'

And the Ulsterman was impressed with Gomel, who on another day could have emerged victorious after wasting plenty of chances in front of goal.

Rodgers continued: 'This game was a great test for us at this point of the season. Today we saw that Gomel is a very good club which is already into the season.

'Their tactical idea was to defend and counter-attack so it was difficult for us to find the open spaces in the first half but at half-time I told my players to be patient and that the chances would come.

'After the first 45 minutes I also changed the structure of the midfield and Steven Gerrard started to play a bit lower than the other two central midfielders.

'I am glad that Stewart scored the goal as we put him on that side to come in and shoot. It was a great shot.'
