Montpellier manager Rene Girard remains full of admiration for former striker Olivier Giroud, but will be all out to stop the Arsenal forward netting against his old club.

Giroud scored 21 goals to help fire Montpellier to the Ligue One title for the first time in their history last season, before joining Arsenal in a 12million summer transfer.

After a slow start, the France international has slowly grown into his new side, scoring five goals as many appearances.

Girard said: 'Olivier worked very hard for us and we almost sculpted him into the player he is today. We made history at the club and had great times.

'Unfortunately for us, he is rediscovering his best form and starting to score goals, but we have tactics to try to stop him.

'We know how good he is, but there are also lots of attacking threats here at Arsenal.'

Captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is looking forward to taking on his old team-mate.

The centre-half said: 'I know him and he knows me very well. 'We will see how we get on tomorrow, and I will work hard.'

Montpellier lost at home to Arsenal on matchday one and their hopes of making it out of Group B are now all but over, sitting bottom with just one point.

Girard said: 'I have told the team qualification for the knockout stages is over, but we still have a slight hope of qualification for the Europa League. “We need to look forward now and build for our Ligue 1 campaign.

'We need to be very solid, to try to get back to our usual form, and up the Ligue 1 table.'

The Montpellier manager added: 'It is a privilege to play in the Champions League, all of the team dreamt of this and fought for it all of last season.

'It has been quite liberating at times, but we just lacked a touch of experience at certain times in the games.

'We are just trying to find a bit more consistency in our results and a balance in our play.'

Well, on Friday night Arsenal's Champions League Group B opponents suffered a 3-1 defeat at newly promoted Reims which leaves them 16th in 20-club Ligue 1 with only one win from their five games.

It's somewhat typical that they have started so poorly after the glory of their title campaign.

The joy of six: Arsenal will face Montpellier after thrashing Southampton

Why is that

Founded in 1909, Montpellier have been a bit of a yo-yo club, flirting with relegation and financial troubles throughout their history.

Despite producing talents such as Eric Cantona and Laurent Blanc, it wasn't until 2009, and the appointment of Rene Girard as coach, that they put together a side truly worth gracing Europe.

What can travelling Arsenal fans expect

The Stade de la Mosson holds 32,900, and whilst Montpellier are not one of France's biggest clubs, the match will likely be a sell-out with a lively atmosphere will greet the visiting players and fans for players and fans. Montpellier is on the south coast, so should provide some nice autumnal sun for the visitors.

What have they won

Two French Cup triumphs in 1929 and 1990 were rare highlights in an otherwise undistinguished history, but the 2011-12 title success has trumped all prior achievements, all on a modest €2million budget compared to the €100m of rivals Paris Saint-Germain.

What about the gaffer, Girard

The former tough-tackling, no-nonsense Bordeaux and France midfielder has blended his own playing style with his knowledge from coaching France Under-21s to create a talented team who play an attractive brand of football.

What are their chances

Arsenal are expected to comfortably win the group, leaving Montpellier to fight it out for second place. They are likely to fall short of Schalke who look the stronger side on paper, but they are certainly not to be underestimated.

Anyone famous ever played for them

Along with Cantona and Blanc, Carlos Valderrama, Roger Mila and former Newcastle winger Laurent Robert all played for the club.

Who should we look out for

Moroccan Younes Belhanda, 22, is the undoubted star, contributing 13 goals and five assists last term in partnership with Arsenal's new boy Olivier Giroud. The young Moroccan has attracted interest from around Europe, striking a lethal partnership with Olivier Giroud as a 'No 10'.

Captain Yapou Manga-Mbwia has been the bedrock of this Montpellier team, putting in stellar performances from the heart of defence, way beyond his tender 23 years. The French International looks poised to add to his solitary cap to date.

And finally, ex-Pompey forward John Utaka has impressed in pre-season, and with Giroud departing to the Gunners, extra goal scoring responsibility will be placed on his shoulders when the two sides meet.

What about Giroud, who hasn't really impressed yet

Despite his slow start for the Gunners, the 6″3 French International striker was untouchable for Montpellier last season, and has left a gaping hole up front for the French side.

Notching 21 goals last campaign, and receiving plaudits from all over Europe, it's surely a matter of settling in for the big Frenchman before he starts to really fire in the Premier League.

Maiya Maneza turned the women's 63kg into a personal pursuit for Olympic and world records after clinching gold for Kazakhstan.

All the talk going into the competition was of a duel between Maneza and Russia's Svetlana Tsarukaeva, with the two lifters going head-to-head for the previous three world championships.

Tsarukaeva led at the interval after a snatch of 112kg compared to Maneza's 110kg, but the Russian's clean and jerk predictably let her down and 125kg (total 237kg) was only enough for silver.

Maneza clinched gold with her first clean and jerk attempt at 135kg – equalling the Olympic record – before she set about trying to take her own world record of 143kg.

Two failed lifts at 144kg meant it was not to be, but a 245kg total was enough for another Olympic record.

Both Maneza and Tsarukaeva failed to total in Beijing four years ago.

Canada's Christine Girard (236kg) edged bronze ahead of Turkey's Sibel Simsek, making up for her agonising fourth place at the 2008 Olympics.
