Reading have completed the signing of Watford defender Adrian Mariappa on a three-year deal.

The 25-year-old has long been linked with a move away from the npower Championship outfit, with Newcastle and Wigan both thwarted in January moves for the centre-back.

Mariappa has now left Vicarage Road, though, and joined the Barclays Premier League new boys, who say they have paid 'a significant fee' for his services.

'It's a great feeling to have signed,' Mariappa said.

'The Premier League is the best in the world, I'm delighted to have the opportunity to come here, try to work my way into the team and perform for Reading Football Club.'

Mariappa becomes the Royals' sixth summer signing, following the additions of Pavel Pogrebnyak, Nicky Shorey, Danny Guthrie, Pierce Sweeney and Garath McCleary.

Reading manager Brian McDermott is pleased with his latest acquisition and backed the Jamaica international to shine at the Madejski Stadium.

'I'm delighted to get the deal to sign Aidy over the line, we have been chasing him all summer,' he said.

'He's been a very important player for Watford over a number of years, he is well known to most of our players already and also the staff here.

'Every single person I have spoken to about him has nothing but good things to say about him both as a player and as a person.'

The move is the first of Mariappa's career after making almost 250 appearances for Watford.

The Harrow-born defender came through the ranks at the Hornets under the tutelage of Nigel Gibbs, Chris Cummins and David Dodds, who are now all part of Reading's backroom staff.

Mariappa, who made his debut in 2005, established himself as a key player for the Hertfordshire side and was awarded the players' player and player of the season awards last term.

Confirming his departure, Watford posted on their website: “Adrian Mariappa has signed for Reading for a significant undisclosed fee.

'The deal has now been formally completed and everyone at Watford Football Club – which, for certain, includes all Hornets' supporters – wishes the home-grown defender well for his future football career.'

Reports suggest Reading are closing in on another signing in the form of Nottingham Forest right-back Chris Gunter.

The Wales international had spells with Cardiff and Tottenham before joining the Reds, who he is reportedly set to leave to link up with the Royals.

Reading are ready to make a huge statement of intent by making a 5million bid for England striker Jermain Defoe.

The Premier League newboys have already brought in five new faces ahead of their return to the top flight, with full-back Nicky Shorey the latest arrival at the Madejeski, following the acquisitions of Pavel Pogrebnyak, Danny Guthrie, Garath McCleary and teenager Pierce Sweeney.

However, Reading manager Brian McDermott is keen to add at least another two players to his squad before the big kick-off, with Premier League experience a key factor.

That has prompted McDermott to look at proven top flight players, and his search has led him to Spurs striker Defoe, who is seeking showdown talks at Tottenham having been frozen out under the latter months of Harry Redknapp’s reign.

Defoe wants assurances over his future under new boss Andre Villas-Boas, but before talks have even got underway, Reading have already offered themselves as a potential escape route and are ready to stump up 5m to get striker.

The 29-year-old has enjoyed a respected career in English football, scoring 195 goals in 470 matches, for West Ham, Portsmouth and two spells at Tottenham.

Reading are now ready to offer Defoe a chance to continue his goalscoring exploits in Berkshire, as they bid to retain their Premier League status for next season.

Losing play-off finalists Blackpool could be set for another blow as Premier League new boys Reading prepare a swoop for star man Matt Phillips.

Phillips, who missed two glorious chances to give Ian Holloway's the lead in Saturday's defeat against West Ham at Wembley, is likely to cost in the region of 2.5million, according to The Sun.

The winger, who has been named in Scotland's squad to play the USA on Saturday, has been consistently linked with a move back to the top flight after a season in which he netted 16 times in all competitions.

Championship winners Reading are bankrolled by Belarussian billionaire Anton Zingarevich and have already signed Nottingham Forest wide man Garath McCleary this month.

Phillips joined Blackpool from Wycombe Wanderers for an initial fee of 350,000 in the summer of 2010.

Celtic face a cash battle to lure want-away Leicester City defender Matt Mills to Parkhead.

Manager Neil Lennon has turned his attentions to the former Foxes captain following the collapse of a move for Polish defender Jaroslaw Fojut.

Fojut was due to arrive in Glasgow on July 1 until his pre-contract agreement was wrecked by knee-ligament damage and an imminent operation in the US.

The SPL champions have also watched Polish international defender Tomasz Jodlowiec of Polonia Warsaw.

Neil Lennon’s first choice, however, is 25-year-old Mills and the Northern Irishman is prepared to offer Kelvin Wilson as a makeweight for a player Leicester signed for 5million from Reading last summer.

As Sportsmail first revealed, Leicester are keen on Wilson — an indifferent performer since his Bosman move from Nottingham Forest last summer.

A deal involving both players is now being discussed.

Signed by Sven Goran Eriksson, Mills fell victim to change of management when Nigel Pearson arrived and Leicester are now desperate to sell after a move to Leeds United fell through in January.

After paying big money last year, however, the Championship club are reluctant to go below 3m for their former skipper.

The newly-crowned champions are in the market for defenders, with Daniel Majstorovic agreeing a deal at AIK Stockholm and Glenn Loovens also set to leave.

A left winger is also sought, with Nottingham Forest’s Garath McCleary targeted, but expected to join Wigan or Newcastle.

Strikers are also on Lennon’s radar, with newly-promoted Southampton expected to return to the table with a fresh offer for Gary Hooper. A 3m bid for Latvian international Artjoms Rudnevs failed when the Lech Poznan player joined Hamburg instead.

Scotland striker Jordan Rhodes and Charlton’s Yann Kermorgant remain possibilities, however, while Blackburn Rovers forward Yakubu has a relegation release clause in his contract and is available, but is seeking wages in the region of 50,000 a week.

Lennon — who was in London as Celtic donated 50,000 to sponsor a room in Paul’s House, the CLIC Sargent Home from Home, near University College Hospital — admitted there are set to be some tough decisions ahead.

‘Already Niall McGinn, Mark Wilson and Richie Towell will leave the club because their contracts are up, and Daniel Majstorovic has signed for Stockholm this week,’ he said.

‘There are a few more who will be out of contract and I need to know what their plans are.

‘There are some I would like to keep, but I am not too sure that is going to be the case.’

One player Lennon intends to do all he can to keep at Parkhead is goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who has impressed in his two loan seasons from Newcastle.

‘He is a priority for us and, hopefully, we can get it over the line,’ said the Celtic boss.
Lennon also spoke of his relish for the Old Firm battle, amid concerns over crisis-hit Rangers.

‘It is a great rivalry and it is important that it stays there,’ he said.

Up for grabs: Forest ace Garath McCleary

Premier League new boys Reading look set to make Nottingham Forest winger Garath McCleary their first signing since confirming promotion.

McCleary, 24, completed a medical at the Berkshire club this week and is now having talks with boss Brian McDermott.

The newly-crowned Championship winners are hoping to tie up a free transfer, with the former Oxford City, Slough Town and Bromley ace's contract at the City Ground due to run out in June.

McCleary was named Forest's player of the season for his efforts this term, which included scoring four goals in one game as his side put seven past Leeds at Elland Road in March.

Forest want to keep McCleary and will also offer him a new deal. But Reading hope the lure of the top flight will help land their man.

Leeds boss Neil Warnock admitted he was cringing after his team suffered a 7-3 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Leeds are five points outside the npower Championship play-off places and boss Neil Warnock revealed he learned more about his players than he has in any of the previous games since he arrived at the club last month.

At one stage Leeds got back from 3-1 down to 3-3, but they then crumbled.

Former QPR manager Warnock said: “I'm quite embarrassed about the result. But I don't think you learn much about your players when you're winning games, I think you learn things when things go against you, who stands up and who you want in the trenches with you.

'I've learnt probably more than I have in the other games tonight, but in fairness some of them were just shattered. We're a bit thin on the ground, but I don't think the centre-backs played poorly, I just thought every shot was going to go in.

'We've fought back really well but the fourth goal was terrible, it was a Sunday League goal. You've got to be stronger mental in certain areas to avoid results like that.'
Garath McCleary was labelled a “special talent” by Forest boss Steve Cotterill after he inspired the stunning win.

The former Bromley winger scored four goals as Forest ran riot in West Yorkshire.

When Robert Snodgrass slotted home an early penalty to put the home side in front, Forest boss Cotterill must have feared the worst.

But the Reds hit back with a stunning strike from on-loan midfielder Adlene Guedioura and McCleary deservedly put them in front just before half-time.

Dexter Blackstock then further increased Forest's lead and although Leeds were soon back on level terms with two goals in as many minutes from Luciano Becchio and Michael Brown, Forest, and in particular McCleary, were not to be denied.

The tricky winger was a thorn in Leeds' side all evening and he struck three times in the space of 15 minutes with some exquisite finishing before Blackstock added a seventh to stun the Leeds faithful and ease Forest's relegation fears.

McCleary has recently been linked with a summer move to the Barclays Premier League and on this evidence he has a bright future ahead of him.

And Cotterill praised the winger after his fine individual displayed helped Forest move seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Cotterill said: 'He's a wonderful boy, he really is. He's scored more goals tonight than games he played last season but he's a great boy.

'He's come from Non-league, he's a special talent, he's raw, he's got two good feet, he can head it, he's strong. I think he can go on to be even better, I think he's a top lad.'
Cotterill added: “It was a stunning game, I know we've won but Leeds United played their part as well. Our chances went in, but they played their part.

'I thought it was an outstanding game by both teams, we're very pleased with the three points more than anything else, but to play in the manner we've played, we've done that a lot this season and ended up losing 1-0 so maybe it's evened out a little bit.'

Garath McCleary came up with a convincing argument for being kept on by cash-strapped Nottingham Forest after shaping one of the scorelines of the season at a stunned Elland Road.

The midfielder, 24, is out of contract in the summer and has yet to be offered new terms, due to Forest’s financial crisis.

Manager Steve Cotterill may just be tempted to pass a begging bowl round the City Ground, though, after McCleary scored four times to wreck Leeds’ faint play-off hopes.

‘Garath is a wonderful boy,’ beamed Cotterill.

‘He has scored more goals tonight than he had appearances last season, but he is a special talent. I’ve never been in charge of a team that’s scored seven, and to do it at a place like this makes it even better.’

It was the first time Leeds have ever conceded seven at home in the League, but there was little sign of the mayhem to come when Adlene Guedioura tripped Ross McCormack for a sixth-minute penalty that Robert Snodgrass converted.

Guedioura made amends with a 35-yard strike Leeds legend Peter Lorimer would have been proud of in the eighth minute.

Guedioura looked like hogging the headlines after leading a lightning-quick 45th-minute breakaway and setting up McCleary for a drive that went in off the underside of the bar.

It was McCleary who took top billing, though, once Dexter Blackstock had put Forest 3-1 ahead with a far-post header in the 52nd minute.

Luciano Becchio bundled home a Snodgrass cutback in the 53rd minute and Leeds were level two minutes later through Michael Brown’s 20-yard strike.

Their joy was short-lived, as McCleary spectacularly volleyed home a Blackstock flick-on in the 56th minute and completed his hat-trick on the hour.

McCleary cut in from the right and beat Lonergan in the 71st minute, and the play-offs could hardly have been further from Neil Warnock’s thoughts when Forest made it seven in the 81st minute, as Blackstock seized on defensive uncertainty.

The Leeds boss, who faces a

moments like this, rather than when you’re winning. It tells you who is
prepared to stand up and be counted, who you want alongside you in the
trenches.

‘We fought back really well to get to 3-3, but their fourth goal was straight off a Sunday League pitch. That demoralises you.’
