David Price has been granted the chance to exact immediate revenge on Tony Thompson after a rematch was agreed for July 6.

The Liverpool heavyweight suffered his first professional defeat when he was knocked out by the American in the second round last month.

But victory for Price at the second time of asking should catapult him back into the mix for world honours.

The 29-year-old's promoter Frank Maloney admitted the fight, which will take place at the Echo Arena, was difficult to make.

'There was a rematch clause in the original contract, but it was still far from easy to make it happen,' he said.

'Because it was such a big win for Thompson there was a lot of interest in him from rival promoters, but we got there and he has signed.

'There were other options for David also, but he and his trainer Franny Smith were adamant they wanted Thompson again.

'There have been a lot of nasty things said about David since the first Thompson bout, but this proves his fighting heart.

'Not many fighters have begged me to jump straight back in with someone who has beaten them.

'The fans in Liverpool have been magnificent to David over the last 12 months and I am sure they will respond and get behind the fight.'

Ricky Burns will defend his WBO lightweight world title against Jose Gonzalez at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow on May 11.

The Scot, who recently defected from Frank Warren to rival promoter Eddie Hearn, has been out of action since beating Kevin Mitchell last September.

Burns, 29, had been due to face IBF champion Miguel Vazquez in London before switching promoters.

Burns had little choice but to face Gonzalez after the WBO threatened to strip him of the title if he looked elsewhere.

The governing body set a deadline of midnight last night and Eddie Hearn and Gonzalez’s promoter Peter Rivera agreed terms and contracts were signed.

'I’m really looking forward to May 11,' said Burns. 'He’s a big puncher with a great KO record, but I’ve been in with big punchers before and that doesn’t worry me in the slightest. It’s great to have the date and name sorted now so I can just focus on getting myself in great shape for a big night in Glasgow.'

Gonzalez, 29, has won all 22 of his professional contests, with 17 coming inside the distance.

'I'm very glad for this opportunity and it’s a dream come true fighting for the world tittle as the mandatory challenge,' he said. 'I'm not worried about fighting in Burns’ homeland. I'm preparing greatly for this fight and I'm sure I will bring the world title to my country.'

Hearn added: 'It’s been a tough few days and we’ve had plenty of obstacles to overcome, but I’m delighted to bring Jose Gonzalez to Glasgow for what I feel will be the beginning of a new era for Scottish boxing.

'Gonzalez is ranked No 1 in the world, undefeated and comes with a dangerous reputation. It’s imperative that we deal with our mandatory challenger to pave the way for big unification clashes but I believe Ricky will face his toughest test yet on May 11.

'We need the support of all the Scottish people as we begin a new journey and cannot wait to raise the roof of the stunning new Emirates Arena.'

George Groves stops Dario Balmaceda in third round

Three and easy! Groves packs far too much power for Balmaceda on Matchroom debut

George Groves needed only three rounds to continue his ascent in the super middleweight division ahead of a potential future fight with domestic rival Carl Froch.

He had originally been scheduled to meet Mohamed Ali Ndiaye next Saturday for the European title and in reality against Balmaceda was in with an underwhelming opponent but if there were any concerns about how seriously he was treating the fight then it instantly became apparent they could be dismissed.

Groves, competing for the first time under the Matchroom banner after this week signing a three-fight deal to be Eddie Hearn’s latest recruit, maintained a high workrate throughout and threatened an early finish from the start.

Weighing in three pounds over the
super middleweight limit and looking significantly big at the weight,
Groves bullied Balmaceda throughout, hurting the Argentinian with a
right hook as the opening round progressed and having regular success
with that same punch later.

It was a right hook to the body that
sent Balmaceda to the canvas after Groves followed his early success by
dominating through to the end of the second round, yet with the stoppage
appearing imminent the bell was to follow even if serving only to delay
the inevitable.

The finish came 58 seconds into the
third with Balmaceda again backed up onto the ropes, Groves throwing a
right hook to the head from which his opponent, having taken a knee and
clearly out of his depth, would not rise.

For the promising super middleweight
it was a workout nonetheless, but one he would have learned little from
and that will need to be more difficult next time out on the undercard
of the unification fight between Mikkel Kessler and Froch.

Lee Purdy earlier enjoyed a ninth-round victory over Cosme River after the Mexican was stopped because of a cut.

Ricky Burns has reportedly become the latest boxer to leave promoter Frank Warren.

The Scottish world lightweight champion has become increasingly frustrated after his unification fight with Miguel Vazquez was rescheduled for April 20.

Burns, 29, had been due to face the Mexican on March 16 at Wembley Arena but Warren released a doctor's certificate which claimed Vazquez was suffering from food poisoning.

Alex Morrison, Burns' manager, said: 'I regret it has come to this because I have known Frank for nearly 40 years, but it has to be for Ricky's sake.

'I felt we had to do something to stop Ricky stagnating. Two fights have been called off after he has trained hard for them and it was not even certain that the bout with Vazquez would have gone ahead on April 20.

'In fact, I now doubt very much that fight was ever going to happen. Vazquez was supposed to be sick but five days later I'm told he was seen sparring in the States.

'There were also a lot of issues I wanted settled before Ricky fought again and these were not concluded satisfactorily. I'm quite sorry this has happened, but I have to safeguard Ricky's future and he feels himself that he now wants to move in another direction.'

Burns has not fought since he stopped Kevin Mitchell in Glasgow in September and was left disappointed when first Liam Walsh and then Jose Ocampo pulled out of a proposed bout in December.

Should his departure be confirmed, Burns will follow in the footsteps of George Groves who defected to Matchroom earlier this week after pulling out his European super-middleweight title fight with Mohamed Ali Ndiaye.

Kell Brook, Tony Bellew and James Degale have also left Warren's stable in recent years.

A spokesman for the promoter declined to comment when contacted by MailOnline this morning.

Ricky Burns' world title unification fight against Miguel Vazquez has been rescheduled for April 20.

The Scot was due to tackle the IBF lightweight champion at Wembley Arena on March 16 but the Mexican has been suffering from a severe viral infection after contracting food poisoning from seafood.

Nathan Cleverly's mandatory world light-heavyweight title defence against Robin Krasniqi has also been moved to the later date.

A doctor's report dated February 25, seen by Sportsmail, revealed that Vazquez presented with a temperature of 40C along with sickness and a fast heart rate. He was advised to rest for at least 10 days.

Promoter Frank Warren said: 'It’s very unfortunate that Vazquez has had to withdraw so close to the fight, but it is on medical grounds, which is beyond my control, due to his viral infection, and we have his doctor’s certificate confirming this.

'Therefore I have had to postpone the fight, not canceled as stated in some media reports, to Saturday April 20 at Wembley Arena. Everybody is disappointed by this postponement, but we have worked hard to ensure that Ricky’s unification fight still goes ahead.'

Burns, who holds the WBO belt, had earlier revealed his disappointment at the news.

He tweeted: 'Absolutely gutted this fight ain't happening, another training camp n it's fell through! Not only that, feel sorry for the fans, my friends and family who have now booked tickets, flights and hotels for 2 fights for it to fall through. Sorry every1!'

The 29-year-old had been due to fight first Liam Walsh and then Jose Ocampo last December but both pulled out at short notice.

His fight with Vazquez was announced in January but last month the Mexican cast doubt over whether it would go ahead.

'There
is nothing concrete,' he said. 'I am waiting on the response from the
promoters. If they come to an agreement, there will be a fight.'

The announcement follows the shock defection of George Groves to rival promoter Eddie Hearn which is expected to be confirmed on Monday.

The super-middleweight was also due
to fight on the London card but will instead fight a week earlier at the
same venue on Matchroom's 'London's Finest' bill.

confirmed: 'George Groves has withdrawn from the Wembley Arena show
promoted by Frank Warren on Saturday March 16.

'Groves was due to challenge for the vacant European super-middleweight title against Mohamed Ali Ndiaye that Mr. Warren won the purse bid for on January 11.

'Groves has stated that he is not interested in boxing for the EBU title at this moment and would like to take his choice of fights in another direction.

'Mr Warren would like to wish George all the best with his career and looks forward to working again with him in the near future.'

Cleverly is also reported to have been suffering from a virus which left him unable to train for five days while Dereck Chisora remains hopeful of returning to the ring next month but has yet to have his hearing with the British Boxing Board of Control after his license was revoked last year.

Frank Lampard has been dealt a remarkable snub by Chelsea after scoring the goal which took him outright second on the club’s all-time scoring list.

There is no mention of him moving to 194 goals to surpass Kerry Dixon on the official website and an interview in which Petr Cech praised the 34-year-old has been edited to cut out mention of the midfielder’s ‘loyalty’, ‘importance’, and being ‘as good as ever’.

An interview with Lampard is available
online but in it he refers mainly to the cold conditions at Stoke and
the team’s performance in the 4-0 victory.

Meanwhile, in a separate article, Cech is quoted as saying: ‘Frank had a very good game and could have added another of his trademark goals because he had two chances inside the box, and I think everybody had a fantastic game.

‘Frank may not start every game but if he plays he plays well with his quality and his experience.’

The goalkeeper’s further acclaim on Lampard, and his service to the club, from the same interview with reporters is omitted.

‘I have known him for a long time,’ Cech
also said. ‘He has been a fantastic player for the club. And, of
course, he has stayed for years at the same club. Bad times, good times –
mostly good times – but that shows the loyalty of the player.’

Cech added: ‘Is he as good as ever The team have changed, and so has his age, but he is still important.’

Mention was made of Lampard equalling Dixon with a goal at Southampton in an earlier piece, so this latest development seems even more peculiar. Rafael Benitez was equally muted in post-match discussions on the England midfielder's feat, preferring instead to praise Brazilian Ramires.

Lampard is eight goals behind all-time top scorer Bobby Tambling but will only have the rest of the season to try to catch him as Chelsea have made clear they will not offer him a new deal.

Gary Cahill was allowed to skip the match at Stoke as his girlfriend Gemma gave birth to a baby boy, and had double cause for celebration as Chelsea got back on track with a 4-0 victory.

'We were training with Gary Cahill yesterday and had worked out the shape of the team with him,' said Rafael Benitez, 'but he had to go because his partner had a baby.

'The baby's fine, he's happy, she's happy, and we are happy, so everything has gone well.'

Some obvious options arise for the baby's name. First, 'Frank' – in honour of Lampard, who became Chelsea's second all-time top scorer with his 194th goal, a well-executed penalty greeted by the travelling fans with a chorus of 'Sign him up'.

Second, 'John' – after Terry, who came off the bench for his first appearance for Chelsea since suffering a knee injury in November.

Or 'Eden' – after Hazard, who scored a screamer to cap a fantastic win.

More controversial, 'Rafael' and 'Fernando', after Benitez and Torres.

The manager, much maligned by fans, insisted his squad are still happy in training despite the reported discontent of his 50m out-of-form striker.

Finally, 'Jonathan', in recognition of the calamitous match for Stoke's Walters, who scored two fantastic own-goals and missed a penalty to complete a disastrous day at the office for Tony Pulis's team.
