Newcastle United have vowed to keep spending and scour Europe for new talent after re-entering the world's top 20 spenders.

And managing director Derek Llambias says chief scout Graham Carr, the man responsible for Newcastle's successful forays into France, may have to travel in disguise in his personal bid to find the best the continent has to offer.

His comments came after Newcastle announced they made a profit for the second year running in their financial figures, released yesterday. The figure of 1.4million is significantly down on last year's 32.6million, but that was largely down to Andy Carroll's 35million sale to Liverpool.

Newcastle, who are back among the game's big-spenders after increasing turnover by 5.4 per cent to 93.3million, increased their wage bill to 64.1million. But that 20 per cent rise is thanks to the addition of players Yohan Cabaye, Papiss Cisse, Davide Santon, Sylvain Marveaux and the recently departed Demba Ba.

Even after adding five more French players to their squad in January, Llambias has vowed to continue backing manager Alan Pardew, and the judgement of Carr in their summer's transfer window.

Although he admitted the Newcastle chief scout may have to go disguised as comedian son Alan to see off competition from Barclays Premier League rivals.

Llambias said: 'I think Graham Carr has more company when he is out there. He's not wearing a disguise just yet but definitely has more company. If he started wearing glasses, he would start looking like his son, Alan.

'There is still money available. There are several positions we are looking at. Next year, we will have the TV money. There is a budget to spend.

'But our transfer policy remains the same. No trophy buys. Basically, we will continue our model as it is. It works so we won't break it.

'We are actively looking at players and have been since October. All over Europe. It's not just France. That's been a good market for us but there are only so many you can get from there.

'There is again a profit this year and we are pleased with any profit, considering where we were in 08-09 to where we are now. It is a huge difference and we have increased the size of the squad in the meantime. We are definitely going in the right direction. We had a 17million operating loss in our first year.'

He is known for his occasional forays into avant-garde fashion, but even for David Beckham sporting a roll of clingfilm seems an unusual choice.

The 37-year-old former England captain was pictured after being substituted during LA Galaxy's clash with San Jose Earthquakes with a clingfilm-like material around his abdomen.

Sam Wilde, director of physiotherapy at
Pure Sports Medicine, said: 'It is often used on rugby and football
players when they come off the pitch after they’ve had a knock.

'It is very much like clingfilm and is used to keep an icepack in place – it's reasonably comfortable to wear.'

'It can also be used to keep heat
rubs and cold gels in place – it works well because it keeps the
temperature consistent,’ said Larry Koyama, physiotherapist at Exercise
and Rehab.

Beckham was
wrapped up after he was withdrawn during the game which Galaxy 3-1.

He was also substituted with ten
minutes left in a game on Sunday, which ended in a shock 1-0 home defeat to San Jose.

It has been rumoured the 37-year-old star is not expected to renew his one-year rolling contract with the club, which comes to an end on December 31.

He is reportedly set to quit the team and may move to New York so his wife can pursue her fashion career.

But sources close to the former Manchester United midfielder – who moved to the US from Real
Madrid in 2007 – said he has no plans to
retire from football.

But
it is understood he and his wife Victoria, 38, are considering a move
to New York with sons Brooklyn, 13, Romeo, ten, Cruz, seven and
16-month-old daughter Harper.

This week Beckham was asked if he had another season in him, two years shy of turning 40.

‘Who
knows’ he said. ‘I’m going to enjoy being in the play-offs… and then
we’ll see how this body feels. Even when I stop playing, I’ll have a
hunger to do something better and be the best.’
