Harry Redknapp is confident QPR can beat Manchester United and open the door for Manchester City to close the gap in the race for the Barclays Premier League title.

Rangers go into their clash with United on Saturday bottom of the Premier League table and seven points from safety.

But Redknapp has used recent examples of a victory over west London rivals Chelsea and a draw over previous employers Tottenham as proof they can pull off a shock win at Loftus Road.

‘You can’t predict results,’ Redknapp told the Fulham Chronicle.

‘We’re playing Chelsea away on the back of being smashed to pieces by Liverpool. What’s the score going to be you might ask 3-0, and 4-0 to them I was surprised as you were.

‘We then play Tottenham at home who’ve beaten everybody away and have scored in all away games – and they don’t score against us.’

With other decent results picked up in the hunt for Premier League survival, Redknapp is certain QPR will be able to take all three points from Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

‘Against Man City who are champions, we get another great point and then another at West Ham, which is a hard place to go,’ he said.

‘So we’re just as capable of getting something against Man U as anyone else.’

Roberto Mancini has dismissed fresh speculation over his job, claiming that every Premier League manager should be in fear of the axe if Manchester City decide to sack him.

Ex-City defender Danny Mills predicted yesterday that Mancini will lose his job if the champions go out of the FA Cup at home to Leeds on Sunday.

When told that former players were claiming his position is under threat, Mancini hit back saying: ‘Probably the players that won a lot of trophies in the club’s history!

‘We started our project three years
ago. In three years we are always on the top, we fight for the title, we
won three trophies, we have the chance to win more this year. All the
people who talk about this don’t understand football.

‘If Manchester City should sack me, the other 20 teams in the Premier League should be without a manager.’

Mancini is under pressure again after
last weekend’s tame surrender at Southampton left City 12 points adrift
of Manchester United.

But after overturning an eight-point
deficit with six games to go last season, the Italian warned Sir Alex
Ferguson’s team that this year’s title race is not over yet.

‘I don’t think like this, never,’ he said. ‘I have another mentality. always think we can win everything.

‘We have 12 games. We need to do our
best, not look at the table because it is not important now. We are a
good team. We did some mistakes and lost some stupid points. We don’t
deserve to stay 12 points behind but United deserve to stay on top at
this moment but at the moment we will see what happens.

‘I think that is a difficult moment
because we lost seven points in three games but in football sometimes it
is strange. When you think it is finished, three or four games can
change everything. While we have the points available to win, we should
believe in ourselves.’

Mancini confirmed that captain Vincent
Kompany will not be fit in time to face Leeds on Sunday as he recovers
from a calf strain, with Gareth Barry also expected to miss the game
through injury.

Sir Alex Ferguson hailed David de Gea's Champions League heroics in the Bernabeu.

The under-fire Spanish goalkeeper was outstanding as Manchester United, who took the lead through Danny Welbeck, escaped with a draw after Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning equaliser.

Ferguson said: ‘De Gea has been improving all season and he even got a touch on the shot from Coentrao in the first half when he put it on to the post.

'He was excellent and made three or
four top saves. He was coming back to Madrid after his career with
Atletico, so to perform like that against Real …’

Real had 28 attempts on De Gea’s goal
in the first leg of this last-16 tie but they were unable to convert
their chances on a frustrating night for Jose Mourinho’s team.

Ferguson added: ‘The tie is 50-50 and
I would say whoever scores first in three weeks’ time will have a good
chance of going through. We made chances and hopefully we won’t regret
missing them.

‘Real are a fantastic
counter-attacking team, but we will be more positive in terms of
selection. We have goals in our team, don’t forget that.’

United took the lead when Welbeck scored only his second goal of the season before Ronaldo hit back with a stunning header.

Ferguson added: ‘It reminded me of
his goal against Roma in the quarter-final in 2009 because that also had
unbelievable spring and power.

‘No player can do that – not even
Messi. Cristiano’s a special talent and it’s nice that he came into the
dressing-room after the game to see his old team-mates.’

Ronaldo, who has scored seven times
in the Champions League this season, added: ‘I did not want to celebrate
the goal out of respect, as I played there for six years. I grew up
there. They welcomed me when I was a child and it’s very special to play
against them.’

He will see them again on March 5 when United host Real in the second leg at Old Trafford.

Mourinho, who hugged United legend
Paddy Crerand at the end of the post-match press conference, said: ‘They
came here to defend and not to concede goals or space. They didn’t play
to win.

'We have players of great potential
and we can score goals. I don’t feel pressure. At Old Trafford we have
the perfect conditions to win.’

Barcelona and Spain star Gerard Pique will be rooting for Manchester United when they take on Spanish giants Real Madrid in the Champions League this week.

Pique has more than one reason to support United. He played for the club between 2004 and 2008 and still has many friends from his time at Old Trafford, while Real, of course, are Barca's arch rivals.

The 26-year-old, who plays in the Champions League himself next week when Barca travel to AC Milan, also told Spanish newspaper Marca that he has spoken to former defensive partner and United stalwart Rio Ferdinand about Wednesday night's game.

'I'd like United to go through because of my history,' Pique told Marca. 'I spoke to Ferdinand and the team's in great shape.'

Former United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who scored the winner when United won the European Cup in 1999, is also backing Sir Alex Ferguson's side, though he has wished former United team-mate and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo luck ahead of the clash.

'I want Manchester United to win but, for the first time, I really don't know what's going to happen,' said the Norwegian, who is currently managing Molde in his homeland.

'I'd like a 4-3, with Cristiano scoring three goals. He was 17 when he went to United, he's a great lad. I watched him become a man.

'If I could sign just one player, I'd sign Cristiano. Yes, Messi is fantastic, but I'd take CR7.'

Solskjaer added: 'Both managers know each other well and the teams are very evenly matched. I think it will be decided by a moment of genius from Van Persie or Cristiano.'

Manchester United's preparations for their Champions League showdown with Real Madrid have been hit by two fresh injury blows.

United face Jose Mourinho's side at the Bernabeu on Wednesday but could be without Phil Jones and Jonny Evans who were forced off with injury in United's 2-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford this afternoon.

Ferguson could now be left with a defensive headache for his side's trip to Spain.

The news is unlikely to ease Ferguson's anger that United's game against Everton was played today, just three days before the crunch European clash.

'There's no fairness at all,' he said. 'It's ridiculous to think that we play on Sunday and Real Madrid play on Saturday with that extra day's rest. We're not giving our teams a chance to be successful in Europe. Leagues in other countries make sacrifices for their teams.

'It's nothing to do with the FA, it's the Premier League. They agreed a contract with TV and they're in control. It's pointless complaining about these things all the time.'

Ruud van Nistelrooy believes the respective performances of Robin van Persie and Cristiano Ronaldo will be key to the outcome of the Champions League last-16 showdown between his former clubs Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Van Nistelrooy, who spent five years at United before moving to Madrid in 2006 for a four-year spell at the Bernabeu, finds it impossible to pick a favourite between the two European superpowers and believes the tie will be settled by the 'smallest details'.

To that end he has singled out United hitman Van Persie and Madrid's former Old Trafford forward Ronaldo as the deciding factors.

'For me the difference will be the form of Cristiano and Van Persie. I think that one of these two players will make the difference,' Van Nistelrooy told Marca.

'Both teams are doing very well. I think Madrid have improved a lot in recent weeks. Taking away the Granada game (1-0 loss) I see a strong team, who played very well against Barca and who show their best in the big games.

The 36-year-old Dutchman feels Madrid, who are looking for a record 10th European Cup crown, boast more quality than Sir Alex Ferguson's side but has warned the Spanish giants that United's 'lethal' strikeforce of Van Persie and Wayne Rooney will take some stopping.

'I think they (Madrid) have more quality on the pitch. But United win and win every week. They trail 2-0 and fight back, they go 1-0 up and control the game.

'United are very much a team. They defend all together and then play for Van Persie and Rooney.

'Madrid, due to injuries, have not been able to create such a solid group and be able to repeat the same team every week.

'Pepe and Marcelo have been injured, (Gonzalo) Higuain and (Karim) Benzema haven't been doing well, (Angel) Di Maria doesn't always play…The injury to Iker (Casillas) doesn't help either because he's always there and very experienced.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex
Ferguson has revealed how he is still affected by the Munich air crash,
55 years on from the disaster.

It comes as rivals Liverpool posted a heart-warming poster on their Facebook page paying tribute to the victims.

Accompanied by a graphic design of the famous Munich clock and a Liverpool shirt, the poster carries the words: 'We all remember. We won't forget. May their soul rest in peace, by the grace of God. You'll never walk alone.'

Ferguson was 16-year-old striker at Queen's Park when eight players and 15 staff and journalists died as a result of a failed take-off on a slush-covered runway.

The 'Busby Babes', named after manager Sir Matt Busby, were returning from a
European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade in Yugoslavia (now Serbia)
when the plane crashed on February 6, 1958.

'I've been affected since a young boy. It was a sad time,' Ferguson, 71, told BBC Sport. 'For many it's probably long forgotten but for someone like me who remembers the day, you won't forget it.'

A minute's silence will be observed at Wednesday's friendly between England and Brazil at Wembley to mark the Munich anniversary as well as victims of the recent nightclub fire in Brazil and the 20th anniversary of the death of World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore on February 26.

Ferguson paid tribute to those who helped rebuild the club, which went on to win the European Cup 10 years later.

'How we rose to get over that is remarkable in terms of [manager] Sir Matt [Busby] and [assistant manager/temporary manager] Jimmy Murphy and all the staff at the time,' he said.

'It was a fantastic group of young men who were destined to be great and that was the tragedy of it in how it was taken away from them.'

And Ferguson says the event is one that should not be forgotten.

'When you were caught up in the aftermath of it and the publicity, and when the papers detailed what had happened, you couldn't help but feel that enormous loss for anyone football-minded,' he added.

'That has carried on for a long, long time and every year you have to remember that.'

Sir Alex Ferguson may be lording it over the rest in the Barclays Premier League, but he isn’t having it all his own way in a competition devised to allow managers from all four divisions to measure their achievements against each other.

The Manchester United boss is sitting on a nine-point gap at the top of the Premier League, but he can’t hold a candle to Leicester’s Nigel Pearson in the Castrol LMA Managers’ Performance Table.

Pearson leads the way, in the latest quarterly table, with Ferguson trailing in fourth behind third-placed Paolo Di Canio, of Swindon, and, gallingly for the man who christened The Etihad Stadium’s inhabitants his ‘noisy neighbours’, Manchester City’s Roberto Mancini in second.

Points are awarded for every competitive game played by all 92 Football League and Premier League clubs. There is a sliding scale for wins, draws, clean sheets, goals scored, winning margins and knock-out matches, with the total number of points gained divided by games played and, finally, multiplied by 10, to do away with decimals, to arrive at the Top Twenty score.

Flying high: Manchester City's Roberto Mancini (left) is second in the LMA table, while Swindon's Paolo Di Canio came in third

Though consistently in the top five or six, the three quarterly tables so far do not make pleasant reading for the fiery United manager.

Bad enough being fifth, behind Roberto Di Matteo, Ronnie Moore, Arsene Wenger and Port Vale’s Micky Adams, in the first, he suffered an even greater indignity in the second by finishing lower than his arch-rival Rafa Benitez.

Despite Benitez’s woes as interim Chelsea boss, he was second to Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe, with Paul Sturrock, Kenny Jackett and Gianfranco Zola also ahead of sixth-placed Fergie.

The inconsistent playing surface at Old Trafford has caused difficulties at times for Manchester United this season – so much so that Darren Fletcher has not been able to play on it.

But it could prove a blessing in disguise when Real Madrid – and ex-United star Cristiano Ronaldo – come calling in the Champions League next month.

The less-than-perfect pitch is coming towards the end of its lifespan – having been laid six years ago.

And it was again noticeable on Saturday, when large areas started cutting up during United's FA Cup tie with Fulham.

But it won't be re-laid until the summer – meaning Ronaldo and co will have to make the best of it as they try to get past United into the last eight.

Earlier this month, Sir Alex Ferguson said the surface had 'collapsed' and that it was so heavy, Fletcher, who was trying to make a return following a bowel condition, was unable to make progress.

Ferguson said: 'We have had six great years out of the pitch. Our groundsman, Tony Sinclair, has done a fantastic job. But it is looking tired now and I think we will have a new pitch in the summer.'

Palace have always held out for 12m citing the fact Walcott had only played a few games for Saints in 2005 and that Oxlade-Chamberlain had not played at a higher level than League One before his move.

Zaha will earn 35,000-a-week at Old Trafford but will be sent back to Palace on loan until the end of the season. Arsenal are the other club in for him but he is expected to opt for United.
