Cristiano Ronaldo fired an ominous
warning to former club Manchester United with a hat-trick as Real Madrid
warmed up for their Champions League showdown against the Red Devils
with a 4-1 Primera Division win over Sevilla at the Bernabeu.

Matches against Sevilla have proved
rich pickings for Ronaldo and it was no different tonight as he followed
up Karim Benzema's 18th-minute opener with goals in the 26th, 46th and
59th minutes as Madrid sauntered to victory .

That took his tally of hat-tricks for the Spanish giants to an incredible 20 before he was replaced in the 63rd minute as Jose Mourinho opted to wrap his trump card in cotton wool ahead of Wednesday's visit of United in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 clash.

Granada, who stunned Mourinho's men last weekend with a 1-0 win courtesy of a Ronaldo own goal, continued where they left off against the champions this evening as they trounced Deportivo La Coruna 3-0 at the Riazor.

Carlos Marchena's own goal on the stroke of half-time set the visitors on their way and Ighalo's strike six minutes after the restart doubled their advantage.

Depor then missed a number of chances to get themselves back into the game and their night was summed up when they conceded a dubious penalty – converted by Guilherme Siqueira – in the last minute and saw Manuel Pablo sent off.

'For Madrid every game is special, but on Wednesday we have to be ready to meet the challenge,' said Madrid defender Pepe, who went on late for his first action since surgery on his right ankle in early January.

'Cristiano is playing well. He is working hard and we need him to keep it up.'

Darren Fletcher, Alexander Buttner and Federico Macheda play for Manchester United reserves

Fletcher on brink of Man United return as stricken midfielder features for reserves

Darren Fletcher is closing in on a first-team return for Manchester United after completing 90 minutes for the reserves on Tuesday night.

The Scotland international hasn't played a competitive game for United since November after being diagnosed with a chronic bowel condition.

United they stand: Scotland international Fletcher and Macheda both featured for the second-string on Tuesday

But Fletcher could soon be available to manager Sir Alex Ferguson after his third run-out for United's second-string this term.

The 28-year-old, who was named in United's squad for their Champions League campaign, starred alongside Alexander Buttner – the summer signing from Vitesse Arnhem – and Federico Macheda.

And despite Macheda opening the scoring, the trio couldn't help United slip to a 2-1 defeat at non-league Stalybridge Celtic.

It was feared Fletcher might not play again but speaking earlier this month, Ferguson said: 'Darren's put a lot of weight back on. He's back to his normal weight from two or three years ago. It's a case of wait and see.'

Talking of Fletcher's inclusion in United's Champions League squad, the Scot added: 'Darren comes into the 25-man squad quite easily, without me having to leave others out because we have a number of players who we don't need to register because of the time they've spent with us as an academy player. That's an advantage.'

Manchester United's shock defeat away at Aberdeen will not worry Red Devils fans – they are too busy celebrating the return of Darren Fletcher.

The Scottish midfielder pulled on a United shirt for the first time since he took a break from football in December 2011 due to health problems.

He came on in the second half but could not help United salvage anything from the match – Anderson's late strike not enough after goals from Jonny Hayes and Joe Shaughnessy.

Shinji Kagawa scored his first goal for Manchester United as the Red Devils picked up the Chevrolet China Cup after a 1-0 victory over Shanghai Shenhua.

New signing Kagawa, who was named as man of the match, found the net after 68 minutes against a second-string Shenhua outfit, who lined up without former Chelsea players Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba at the Shanghai Stadium.

United had the first chance of the game after 25 minutes when Anderson chipped a through ball to another new arrival Nick Powell, who brought the pass down inside the box with his right foot before scuffing his shot wide with his left.

MATCH STATS

Man United: Lindegaard (Johnstone), Veseli (Vermijl), Ferdinand, Carrick, Anderson (Scholes), Kagawa, Petrucci (Bebe), Valencia (Lingard), Macheda (Hernandez), Brady, Powell (Tunnicliffe)

Subs not used: Amos, Berbatov, Wootton

Goal: Kagawa, 68

It was the hosts who drew the first save from either goalkeeper as Joel Griffiths broke through the middle before forcing a good stop from Anders Lindegaard who deflected the Australian's effort wide.

Kagawa – playing just behind a lone striker- was a thorn in the side of the hosts and used neat footwork to break free of the Shenhua midfield before sliding in the largely ineffectual Federico Macheda, who could not beat Shengjiong Qiu from inside the area, the home goalkeeper pushing the Italian's effort wide.

The visitors started to dominate and Bebe – who replaced Powell at the break- fired hard and low to force a good save from Qiu.

United did however take the lead when Bebe beat his man with ease on the
left before playing in Japan international Kagawa whose effort
deflected past Qiu for what would prove to be the match-winner.

Manchester United will intensify efforts to prise Robin van Persie from Arsenal, after Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed he is willing to let Dimitar Berbatov go.

Wantaway Berbatov set up Federico Macheda for the only goal of United’s opening South Africa tour game against Amazulu.

Meanwhile, reports in Italy, claimed that United have had a bid for the Dutchman rejected by Arsenal.

Van Persie is in danger of pricing himself out of a move to Juventus after the Turin giants switched their attention to Stevan Jovetic.

The Fiorentina forward could cost Juve 23million. Van Persie, 29 next month, has rejected Arsenal’s offer of 130,000 a week and Juve know they can secure Jovetic, 22, for 45,000 a week.

Manchester City have been favourites to strike a deal for Van Persie.

Ferguson’s only comment was on Berbatov’s desire to leave Old Trafford, possibly moving to Galatasaray for 5million or even returning to Tottenham.

'I do not need to herald the
abilities of Dimitar Berbatov, he is a fantastic talent,' said Ferguson.
'Last season he didn't quite get the amount of football he wants. At
his age, it was difficult for him to accept his position in the forward
line.

'He had Rooney, Welbeck and Hernandez in front of him, and they are all young men. The boy has a future, but if he wants to leave it is a different matter.

'I am easy about it if he stays. I
would be happy with that. But if someone comes in and Dimitar wants to
leave, we will assess it.'

Berbatov released a statement on his Facebook site last week revealing his frustrations at a summer of speculation.

It said: ‘I am tired of speculation,’ he said on his Facebook page.

‘I read the papers and I see they say 10million is my price. I go and talk with Sir Alex, and he says to me 5m.

‘So who is telling the truth I love this club, but I’m not going to be useful to anyone if I am not playing.

‘I want to play, I want to help. But for unknown reasons it’s not going to happen or my chances will be limited, so it’s better for everyone if we say goodbye.

‘If not, I am professional and I will keep doing everything I can to help my team and my team-mates, whenever I have the opportunity to do so.’

Emil Dantchev, his agent, said on Tuesday: ‘Dimitar likes Serie A and would be happy to discuss a move [to AC Milan].’

He only played 21 times for United last season as he was overlooked in favour of Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez as Wayne Rooney's strike partner.

The long road to Premier League revenge and redemption began far from home for Manchester United last night as they launched their tour of South Africa with victory in the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Sixty-six days after suffering title heartbreak at the hands of Manchester City in a dramatic final twist to the season, Sir Alex Ferguson's side overcame the sixth best team in South Africa last season with a first-half goal from Fedrico Macheda.

Surprisingly, the architect of their
victory was Dimitar Berbatov who is perhaps fortunate to be on this tour
after publicly calling for Ferguson to sell him before the squad flew
out on Monday.

Whether he is still at Old Trafford
when the new season starts is another matter as speculation grows over a
move to Galatasaray or a return to Tottenham.

Berbatov was at the heart of United's
best moves and set up Macheda in the 20th minute with a neat pass, the
Italian applying the finish by slipping the ball under the body of
goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini.

The goal was United's reward for a
dominant opening but a team containing several fresh faces in Frederic
Vaseli, Scott Wootton, Robbie Brady and the impressive Jesse Lingard –
and playing in the questionable new gingham-style kit – came under more
pressure as AmaZulu grew in confidence, and Anders Lindegaard had to
produce key saves from Ayanda Dlamini and Carlington Nyadombo to
preserve the lead.

Despite all the changes made by both
teams, Ferguson kept Shinji Kagawa on the bench until the 89th minute
when the Japan international received a huge ovation.

United's other new signing Nick Powell
did not feature at all but will hope to play a part in Saturday's
second game in Cape Town.

Loaner: Federico Macheda disappointed at QPR

Federico Macheda is hoping to banish memories of a poor season by getting his Manchester United career back underway.

The 20-year-old Italian striker has done little since his wondergoal clinched a dramatic win over Aston Villa during the run-in to United's title-winning season of 2009 and marked him out as a future star.

Macheda has made just 12 starts for United since and has been farmed out on loan to Sampdoria and QPR, where he failed to impress.

But Macheda blamed his poor spell at Loftus Road on a niggling ankle injury and insists now he is back to full fitness he can show his true worth to United.

Macheda told the club’s official website: 'It’s great to be back at Manchester United. When you go on loan you really understand how important it is to play for this club.

'I’m really happy to be back and I can’t wait for the start of the season.

'Last season was disappointing. In the first six months I didn’t get a lot of opportunities here so we decided it was best for me to go on loan.

'When I got to QPR things went a bit wrong, though, as I was feeling my ankle a lot. But now I feel a lot better and want to start the season well. It’s a big season for me.'

The ugly side of Mario Balotelli unfortunately came to the fore once more after the striker clashed with members of Italy's backroom staff in the wake of the Euro 2012 final.

Balotelli endured a frustrating evening as Spain romped to a historic third successive major international tournament victory.

Volatile Balotelli had had a splendid tournament until that point, most notably when he blasted Italy into Sunday's showpiece with a stunning double to down Germany.

However at the full-time whistle in Kiev, the Manchester City man made a beeline for the dressing room. He came up against resistance from senior figures and appeared to push one.

After several minutes, Balotelli could then be seen on his haunches in the centre of the pitch. He later collected his medal.
