Fulham captain Brede Hangeland has ended speculation surrounding his future by signing a two-year contract extension at the club.

The 31-year-old's new deal includes an option for a further year, which if exercised would see the Norway international remain at the London club until the end of the 2015/16 campaign.

A statement on Fulham's website confirmed: 'Fulham Football Club is delighted to announce that captain Brede Hangeland has signed a two-year extension to his current contract, with an option for a further year, which will keep the defender at the club until at least the summer of 2015.'

Hangeland, whose existing deal was due to expire at the end of the season, joined Fulham from FC Copenhagen in January 2008 and has since made 233 appearances for the club in all competitions.

'I'm so happy, delighted,” Hangeland said on fulhamfc.com.

'It's taken a long time but we're there now and I hope the club is happy – I'm certainly really happy to have signed.

'I've loved my time with Fulham. It's been a little over five years and I've felt right at home from the very first game.

'I couldn't really see myself leaving, so to finally have signed gives me a great feeling.'

Hangeland was linked with a move to QPR in January, but Fulham rejected two bids from their West London rivals.

He featured in every Premier League game last season for Martin Jol's side, and has appeared 23 times this campaign.

Fulham currently have several players whose contracts are up in the summer, including Mladen Petric, Mark Schwarzer, Chris Baird, Mahamadou Diarra, Giorgos Karagounis and Neil Etheridge.

Michael Laudrup has moved to end speculation about his future by signing a one-year contract extension at Swansea City.

The Dane had been linked with Real Madrid and Chelsea in the wake of Swansea’s remarkable Capital One Cup final triumph against Bradford last month.

But the 48-year-old declared his desire to lead Swansea into Europe after agreeing a deal that will run until June 2015.

He said: ‘We’ve started something this season that I want to continue.

‘I know there has been a lot of
speculation (about my future), but I’ve always said that I am happy here
and I never had any doubts I would stay.

‘I am delighted to sign the new deal
and I’m already really looking forward to next season. I hope there will
be some very exciting things happening with the team and with the club
in Europe.’

The development will go some way to
protecting Swansea financially. Sportsmail understands that Laudrup, 48,
has committed to a hefty clause in the region of 5million, much like
the one Brendan Rodgers agreed to when he signed his extension at the
Liberty Stadium four months before joining Liverpool.

Last night Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins admitted he still fears bigger clubs will come in for his manager.

He told Sportsmail: ‘It’s a fact of
life in football that if you do well people will want your manager or
players and there is no such thing as a cast iron agreement anymore.

‘But this deal shows Michael’s desire
to stay here and it also gives us the extra financial security if
another club does come in.’

Jenkins added: ‘The success we have
had with Michael has been brilliant. I thoroughly enjoy working with him
and long may that continue.

‘This is obviously great news for
everyone connected with the club, from the fans, to the players and the
staff. We are delighted that he has agreed this extension.’

Talks only started last week between
the two parties after Laudrup was initially reluctant to commit his
future to the club beyond stating his desire to lead the club in Europe.

Jenkins said: ‘I think the fact we got it done relatively quickly shows you what Michael thinks about the club.

‘He is enjoying himself and he finds the challenge exciting, which for him is very important.’

Ferdinand seems more likely to sign yet so far, the 34-year-old has still to commit himself, amid rumours of interest from the US, China and the cash-rich Far East.

However, Ferguson is confident Ferdinand will remain at Old Trafford.

'That is a strong possibility,' he said. 'It would have to happen before the end of the season.'

Ferdinand is managing a long-standing back complaint and his performances this season suggest he still has a major role to play with the Red Devils, even if England boss Roy Hodgson is not interested.

He is virtually certain to be involved against Real Madrid on Tuesday, when United look to secure their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

'I think he has had a great season,' said Ferguson.

'He has managed himself the right way and we have contributed to that in the preparation we give him.

'He doesn't play every game in the same way that Ryan doesn't play every game.

'But in terms of key matches he has been absolutely brilliant.

'Two weeks ago, against Real Madrid, he was excellent so we need to get him ready for the big one on Tuesday.'

Lionel Messi has signed his two-year contract extension with Barcelona.

The Argentina superstar put pen to paper on his new deal at the Nou Camp this afternoon and is now tied to the Catalan giants until June 30, 2018.

Messi follows in the footsteps of fellow club stalwarts Xavi and Carles Puyol, both of whom signed their extensions last month.

Barca announced in December they had agreed new contracts with the trio.

It's
little wonder Barcelona are keen to tie down Messi's future for as long
as possible – the Argentina international has scored 45 goals in 34
appearances this season so far.

And that comes off the back of an incredible 91 goals during the 2012 calendar year.

The news was welcomed by Messi's teammate Jordi Alba, who said: 'I can't imagine what Messi will be like in 2018, but it's great news for Barca fans that he's staying.

'He is the best player in the world and as long as nothing happens, he'll be the best ever. We'll try to make him feel as comfortable here as we can.'

The former Valencia player added: 'I was once unlucky enough to have to face him as an opponent, but now I'm here I'm delighted to have him as a teammate.

'I have never seen anybody capable of doing the things he can do.'

Messi, 25, came up through the youth ranks at Barca before making his competitive debut against Espanyol in 2004 at the age of 17.

Since then he has established himself as one of the best players in history, breaking numerous records in the process.

He won his fourth straight FIFA World Player of the Year award last month following a remarkable 2012 in which he scored 91 goals – smashing the world record of 85 in a calendar year set by Bayern Munich and West Germany striker Gerd Muller in 1972.

While setting that record, Messi became the first man to score five times in a Champions League game as Barca crushed Bayer Leverkusen 7-1 last March.

Three weeks after that he became Barca's all-time leading goalscorer after a brace against Granada moved him on to 233 official goals, one more than the previous record set by Cesar Rodriguez during the 1940s and 50s.

He has been in similarly stunning form in 2013 and his goal in Sunday's 1-1 draw at Valencia was a league-record 12th consecutive game in which he found the net.

During his time at the Nou Camp, Messi has also helped Barca win a host of silverware, including five Primera Division titles, three Champions Leagues, two Copa del Rey crowns and two FIFA Club World Cups.

Ryan Giggs considers retirement from Manchester United at end of season

Ryan Giggs will decide at the end of the season whether to call time on his illustrious 23-year Manchester United career.

The 39-year-old, the most decorated player in Premier League history with 12 titles, has made just 16 appearances for United this season as manager Sir Alex Ferguson carefully manages his fitness.

Indications are that Giggs will be offered a one-year contract extension to continue his top-flight career into his 40s, a case strengthened by a number of game-changing performances this season.

He played an outstanding, looping pass that set up Robin van Persie's late equaliser at West Ham in the 2-2 FA Cup third round draw last week.

But speaking to the Sunday People, Giggs, also a four-time FA Cup and two-time Champions League winner, said he would wait before deciding on his future.

'I will see how I feel and see how I am contributing, and then I will sit down and talk to the manager,' he said.

'I am cool with that. I am enjoying my football at the moment, but the end of the season is a few months away and you never know what will happen.

Still got it: Giggs has continued to excel in his 16 appearances for United this season

'I have to contribute as well as enjoying both training and playing.'

Giggs credited Ferguson for allowing him to play on into his late thirties, a significant point given Chelsea's unwillingness to give 34-year-old Frank Lampard a new deal and Liverpool's policy of only signing players under the age of 23.

'In a way I suppose I get an easier ride than some of the younger lads, and that's because the manager recognises I have different needs at this point,' he added.

'But don't get me wrong, my fitness has to be spot on, otherwise I just couldn't compete with the rest of the guys either in training or during matches.'

The winger has been touted by Real as a replacement in the event that Cristiano Ronaldo leaves the Bernabeu but Spurs have leapt to cash-in on their star Welshman, according to the Sunday Mirror.

The new price tag is almost double the 33m bid which Marca claimed Real were piecing together earlier in the week.

Ronaldo has refused to sign a contract extension and could pressure Madrid into releasing him for a fraction of his 80m transfer from Manchester United.

While he has been linked to a possible return to Old Trafford, Bale remains Madrid’s number one transfer target.

They are keen to secure a deal before the end of the season and are desperate to avoid the dragged-out negotiations they waded through over Luka Modric.

Spurs, however, are unlikely to support a smooth and painless transfer, despite having signed a so-called partnership agreement with Real as part of Modric’s sale.

Chairman Daniel Levy’s valuation has catapulted Bale into the same bracket as Lionel Messi, Ronaldo and Radamel Falcao.

‘Real are prepared to push very hard for Gareth and there are not too many better players in the world than him right now,’ a source said.

Nani cannot go to Arsenal says Sir Alex Ferguson

We won't let him go! Fergie tells Arsenal their pursuit of Nani is doomed

Alex Ferguson has dismissed Arsenal’s
hopes of signing Nani when the transfer window reopens next month.

The Portuguese winger has been
sidelined by a hamstring injury since November but the United boss
revealed talks are in place to extend his current deal at Old Trafford
beyond 2014.

Nani has found himself on the fringes of United's first-team and had appeared out of favour after a falling out with Ferguson and an impasse over a contract extension.

He also had a bust-up with promising

early November.

But Ferguson said: ‘We won’t be letting him go. His contract isn’t up for a year and a half. We need a Nani, he’s got incredible talent,' report the Sunday Times.

Arsenal were using Manchester United’s swoop for Robin van Persie as leverage in their chase for misfit Nani.

The Holland striker’s 24m move to Old Trafford was largely smooth and pain-free. And the north London club tried to use
the fact they did not turn Van Persie’s switch into a drawn-out saga as
a bargaining tool in their discussions for Nani.

Sportsmail revealed Arsene Wenger’s interest in the 26-year-old winger earlier this month. Chelsea are also contenders to sign Nani, should he ever leave Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are having better luck in the chase for 5million left-back Luke Shaw, a Premier League regular for Southampton at 17.

Arsene Wenger has signed Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from the club and will use that relationship to move for Shaw as Chelsea are also interested.

Jonny Wilkinson will make a decision on his future at double-chasing Toulon next February.

Toulon have offered the 33-year-old, who is pushing for a Lions place next summer, a contract extension but he has yet to commit himself for another season.

He said: 'I believe the club may very well decide to stick with me, but before I make my decision I need to know if I can bring something positive to the team.'

Wilkinson is in his fourth season
following his move from Newcastle in 2009 and has become a firm
favourite at the high-spending club, who lead the French championship
and are on course for a quarter-final place in the Heineken Cup.

The success has prompted questions of
whether Toulon can win both competitions and Wilkinson believes the
squad's strength in depth means they can deliver silverware.

He said: 'It would be the best way to reward them. If you ask me if we can do the double, I say yes.

'I take great pleasure from playing
for Toulon and especially this season. Personally, I'm never satisfied,
but I'm happy to be that way.'

transmit.'

Wilkinson said he always has the
desire to play but added: 'Just like when I came to the end of my
contract at Newcastle, I didn't make the decision for myself but for the
club.

'The question is not, “What do I
want” but, “What do the coaches and the other players want from me”
'If I can answer that, then I can start thinking about what I would like
from a perfect world. 'But that is not a priority for me.'

Theo Walcott is invaluable and Arsenal must keep him, says Thomas Vermaelen

Walcott is invaluable and dangerous… we must keep him at Arsenal, says Vermaelen

|

UPDATED:

16:08 GMT, 18 December 2012

Thomas Vermaelen feels Theo Walcott is invaluable to Arsenal – but accepts there is little his team-mates can do to stop the England forward walking away at the end of the season.

Walcott was deployed in his preferred central striker's role at Reading, where he netted the final goal in a 5-2 win which lifted the Gunners back up to within two points of fourth place.

The 23-year-old is currently in negotiations over a contract extension with the club. However, as the January transfer window looms, there is little indication of a swift conclusion.

On target: Walcott scored in the win over Reading on Monday night

On target: Walcott scored in the win over Reading on Monday night

Having seen close friend and former skipper Robin van Persie leave last summer when he could not agree a new deal, Vermaelen admits no matter how key a player may be, the rest of the squad have to remain focused on the here and now.

'Of course we want him to stay, but that is something that is going on between the player and the club. I don't know what is going on behind the scenes – we don't talk about it, because that is going on in football all the time,' Vermaelen said.

'It happened last time with Robin in the summer. It's the job of the board and the club what they are going to do with it so we can't do anything about it.'

Centre-half Vermaelen added: 'Theo has been invaluable for us when he played this year. He is dangerous for us, can stretch a team with his pace and I hope he could stay this year.'

Theo Walcott

Main man: Walcott led the line for Arsenal in their win at the Madejski

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger felt his team answered their critics in the best way possible at the Madejski Stadium last night, where a hat-trick from Santi Cazorla saw them race into a 4-0 lead before any threat of a fightback was eventually extinguished by Walcott's late strike.

It was a missed penalty from Vermaelen which saw Arsenal lose their Capital One Cup shoot-out at Bradford.

The Belgian defender, however, maintains the squad were determined to put that bitter disappointment behind them as soon as possible.

'You can't stand still too long with a defeat like that – you just learn from it and move on,' he said.

In the spotlight: Walcott could yet leave the Emirates next month

In the spotlight: Walcott could yet leave the Emirates next month

'We had a lot to prove. A lot of people questioned us and maybe that's normal, but we wanted to perform against Reading and we did that.'

Despite all of the headlines of a club in crisis with broken cannon motifs on the back pages, all is not yet lost for the Gunners, who will discover their opponents in the last 16 of the Champions League on Thursday morning.

Indeed, should Arsenal win their lunchtime kick-off at struggling Wigan on Saturday, then they would, temporarily at least, leapfrog over Tottenham and back up into the top four.

'If you play for a team like Arsenal, there are always going to be people outside you who are going to question the manager and the team,' Vermaelen said.

'The thing is, you have to stay united and work hard on the training pitch because we are the only ones who know what's going on in the team. What people say outside is just part of the job.'

Manchester United players laugh at annual youth team pantomime

Ho, ho, ho! Tis the season to be jolly… but just what is Fergie and his Manchester United stars laughing at

Just what has made Sir Alex Ferguson and his players laugh so hard

Has someone shown them the Premier League table, which shows a very healthy six-point lead over bitter rivals City

Perhaps Nemanja Vidic is smiling because he's finally seen the back of the treatment table, or Ryan Giggs has been told he's getting another contract extension.

Or maybe, Mario Balotelli's notorious lack of direction has led him to turn into the wrong training ground in his camouflaged Bentley.

Tis the season! Sir Alex Ferguson is tickled by something in the club's annual Christmas panto, performed by youth team players

All smiles: Ryan Giggs (left) and Wayne Rooney in fits of giggles at something in the panto. Rooney was reportedly the butt of many jokes

The real reason is much better –
they're watching the annual United youth team pantomime today, a chance for
the up and coming stars to lampoon the senior boys without fear of
Fergie's wrath.

It's an annual tradition at the
Carrington training complex after a slap-up Turkey meal where the
sprouts and spuds are usually doled out by Sir Alex himself.

It was also a bit of light relief for the young charges, who were beaten 4-3 at home by Burnley in the FA Youth Cup this week and so missed out on a tie with Manchester City.

Apparently, Wayne Rooney was once
again the butt of most of the jokes in the performance, with the younger
lads poking fun at his weight.

'They're considering hiring fat suits,' said a club source last week.

Rio Ferdinand alluded to the show on Twitter, saying: 'Funny day at training today….pity the weather didn't reflect our mood! #gloomy'

Last year, he was ridiculed for his
hair transplant when a youth team player dressed up in a Rooney No10
shirt, Shrek mask and curly black wig.

He then gave a mock interview, describing how the follicle transplant had changed his life.

The real Rooney couldn't do anything but laugh – though I'm sure his face was bright red.

Another target last time was Spanish
goalkeeper David De Gea, who had been caught stealing a doughnut from
Tesco earlier in the year.

A youth team player walked onto the stage munching a box of Krispy Kremes.

But there was controversy too, with reports that an unidentified player threw a mince pie at Sir Alex.

It would be a brave man to parody the boss in the panto, but pie-throwing is surely the height of foolishness!

P.S. At least Fergie finds it funny this time!

Last year, Rooney landed himself in hot water on a Manchester United-themed quiz show. In a game of charades, he was asked to act out the film 'Bend It Like Beckham' for teammates Ryan Giggs and Jonny Evans to guess.

They just couldn't get it, so Rooney pointed at Sir Alex on the opposing team and mimed a boot being kicked into his face – a reference to the nasty incident involving Becks in the dressing room after a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in a 2003 FA Cup final.

To say Fergie didn't look impressed was an understatement and he just said: 'That'll cost you.'
