Euro 2012 results: Sweden 2 England 3 – Danny Welbeck scores winner

Sweden 2 England 3: Welbeck to the rescue to leave Hodgson's men in driving seat

Danny Welbeck's sublime finish put England on the path towards the knockout stages in a rollercoaster match at Euro 2012.

The striker guided home Theo Walcott's cross with a skilful turn in the 78th minute to seal victory for Roy Hodgson's men.

It leaves them level in top spot on four points with France in Group D ahead of Tuesday's decider with the Ukraine, which they must not lose. Sweden, meanwhile, are now out.

Andy Carroll had earlier put England into a first-half lead with a superb header. Olof Mellberg then hit a quickfire double after the break before Theo Walcott drew England level at 2-2.

Elmander recalled after injury as Sweden boss makes three changes to tackle England

Sweden have recalled Johan Elmander as one of three changes made by coach Erik Hamren for Friday's Group D showdown in Kiev against England.

Elmander only played the last 20 minutes in the loss against Ukraine having just recovered from a right foot fracture, but will replace Markus Rosenberg as Sweden fight to keep their Euro 2012 hopes alive.

Hamren also shuffled his midfield and will bring on Anders Svensson to partner Kim Kallstrom in the middle, with Rasmus Elm moving out to the left wing and Ola Toivonen dropped to the bench.

In defense, Jonas Olsson will play center back, with Andreas Granqvist moved out to right back in place of Mikael Lustig. Assistant coach Marcus Allback said Lustig has a hip problem.

Meanwhile, former Sweden star Freddie Ljungberg can understand why Roy Hodgson is set to hand Andy Carroll his first competitive England start on Friday.

Although he initially suggested there would be no changes from the team that drew with France in England's Euro 2012 opener on Monday, it appears Hodgson is going to swap things around.

Six of the past seven goals conceded by Erik Hamren's men have been headers, including two for Andriy Shevchenko when they lost to co-hosts Ukraine earlier this week.

Ljungberg, who won 75 caps during a 10-year international career, does not understand why Sweden should suddenly have a problem in that department, but the 35-year-old feels Hodgson's stance is perfectly reasonable.

'They are putting Carroll in to exploit a problem for Sweden,' said Ljungberg.

'Out of the last 11 goals Sweden have conceded, seven have been headers, and it is something like six of the last seven.

'It shouldn't be like that. When I was playing Sweden's strength was being solid at the back and good in the air so it is a bit of a surprise they conceded so many goals in that way.

'But because they have, I completely understand the reasoning behind Hodgson's tactics.'

Still going after all these years, the Roy of the Rovers comic strip is now available on digital platforms and publishers Egmont UK have produced some special images of the football icon backing his namesake Roy Hodgson on Monday.

You're the one, Johan

Such is Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s standing in Sweden, the 30-year-old Milan striker is said to have a major influence on coach Erik Hamren’s team selection. Today against Ukraine the duo have apparently selected former Bolton striker Johan Elmander to start up front with the enigmatic Ibrahimovic. No pressure there, then Johan. Just remember who picked you.
