Gus Poyet has emerged as a contender for the vacant manager job at Reading following Brian McDermott's sacking.

The Brighton boss is chasing a Championship play-off spot and Reading would only be keen on a move for the Uruguayan if they could agree a financial deal to bring him to the club swiftly, as they look for someone to keep them in the Premier League.

A source close to Poyet said he would be keen on a move closer to London but added he is happy at Brighton and would only consider taking the job if he was part of a long-term project.

McDermott has left the country with a friend to reflect on the last couple of days after he was left devastated by the decision to sack him.

Paolo Di Canio was installed as an early bookies favourite and is known to want the post and the chance to manage a Premier League club. Roberto Di Matteo is also a candidate, but sources close to the former Chelsea manager say he is not interested.

And Nigel Adkins, who is not currently in charge at a club after he was sacked by Southampton, is under consideration.

Reading announced yesterday that owner Anton Zingarevich said it was the 'hardest decision of his life' to sack McDermott but that 'he and Brian remain on good terms after meeting in person on Monday.'

Zingarevich and Eamonn Dolan, head of the club's academy who has been brought in as caretaker manager, met with first team players and staff at their Hogwood Park training ground yesterday.

Dolan also held a series of meetings throughout the day ahead of their Premier League match against Manchester United on Saturday, where he is expected to take charge. First team coaches Nigel Gibbs and Yannis Anastasiou have also both left the club.

Following the game against United there is a two-week gap before their next fixture away to Arsenal, and Reading are yet to formally approach any potential candidates.

St Helens have announced the signing of Hull second rower Willie Manu on a two-year contract.

The 32-year-old Tonga international rejected the offer of a new deal from Hull and becomes the first signing for Nathan Brown, who takes over as head coach at St Helens from November.

Manu, currently with the Exiles squad preparing for Saturday's game against England at Langtree Park, has been a model of consistency since joining Hull from Castleford six years ago and has missed only three matches in the last three seasons.

'Willie is one of the best back-row forwards in rugby league and will introduce a new dimension to our game,' said St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus.

'He is a devastating runner with a phenomenal workrate and is one of the league's top tackle-bust makers.

'He is also a great defender too and we look forward to welcoming him next season.'
Manu, who played for Wests Tigers, South Sydney and St George Illawarra before coming to Super League, was briefly a member of England coach Steve McNamara's training squad in 2010 after qualifying through residency.

He was Hull's player of the year in 2011 but, after rejecting their final offer, was given permission to talk to other clubs, who included Catalan Dragons.

McManus added: 'I would like thank Hull FC for allowing us permission to speak to Willie and express my appreciation for the way the club has conducted itself during the negotiations.'

Manu could be joined at Langtree Park by his current Hull team-mate Jordan Turner, the 23-year-old former Salford centre who is also out of contract at the KC Stadium at the end of the year.

St Helens have parted company with head coach Royce Simmons just seven matches into the Stobart Super League season following the club's disastrous start.

Simmons, who was in the second year of a two-year contract, guided Saints to a fifth successive Grand Final last October but has paid the price for the club's worst ever run in the summer era.

Saturday's 12-8 loss at Bradford was their fourth straight defeat and they have taken just a point from their last five matches, their worst run since 1985.

Simmons' right-hand man Kieron
Purtill has also stepped down and Saints have appointed head of
performance Mike Rush as acting head coach, with former captain Keiron
Cunningham as his assistant

St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus
said: 'Our season has got off to a difficult start and it is best to
make change sooner rather than later.

'We have every faith in Mike Rush and
Keiron Cunningham. They each know the club inside out and have all the
experience together to take us forward.'

St Helens 38 Salford 10: Saints have a sticky start but recover to win their first game at new home

Andrew Dixon scored two second-half tries to ensure St Helens celebrated a new beginning at Langtree Park, but only after Salford had threatened to ruin their hosts’ big night.

James Roby levelled the scores in the 50th minute after Saints trailed throughout the first half. Then tries from Dixon, Francis Meli, Jon Wilkin and Anthony Laffranchi christened their new home with an emphatic win.

Saints chairman Eamonn McManus received an ovation during a pre-match opening ceremony.

‘This is the end of 10 years’ effort from a lot of people,’ he said. ‘I’m overwhelmed.’

Salford forged a 10-0 lead through Jodie Broughton and Ashley Gibson tries before Sia Soliola replied.

A week after having their own stadium
opening night ruined by Castleford, the Reds threatened to spoil Saints'
party with a first away win for more than 30 years when they led 10-0
after 24 minutes.

But Saints came to life in the second half with a three-try burst in eight minutes to turn the game on its head and, although well below their best, they currently sit at the top of the Stobart Super League with two wins from their first two matches.

The Reds, who lost Jordan James, Sean Gleeson and Wayne Godwin to injury in their opening game, are bottom of the table without a win but deserve credit for their impressive first-half show.

St Helens, who gave home debuts to overseas signings Lance Hohaia and Anthony Laffranchi, held a parade of club legends before kick-off but it was one of the absent 'greats' who had the biggest impact on the first half.

Sean Long, a Knowsley Road favourite for 13 seasons, has been put in charge of Salford's attack as part of his role of assistant coach and he would have been delighted with their first-half efforts.

With half-backs Matty Smith, another Saints old boy, and Daniel Holdsworth pulling the strings, the Reds posed a major attacking threat.

Centre Joel Moon demonstrated superb handling to carve out an opening for left winger Jodie Broughton, who had the distinction of scoring the first Super League try at the new stadium.

Clever hands by Holdsworth then got right winger Danny Williams into space and his inside kick was touched down by centre Ashley Gibson, with Holdsworth's first conversion putting the visitors into a 10-0 lead.

Gibson had another try disallowed by video referee Ian Smith, who had a busy first half, giving St Helens second rower Soliola the benefit of the doubt in awarding a 28th-minute try but disallowing one by winger Tommy Makinson after he followed up Roby's grubber kick to the line.

Salford were good value for their 10-4 interval lead but Saints demonstrated more urgency after the break and scored a second try on 49 minutes when Roby gathered his own kick after it bounced back off a post.

Makinson's first goal levelled the scores and Royce Simmons' men went in front for the first time four minutes later when Jonny Lomax's kick over the Reds defence bounced kindly for his half-back partner Lee Gaskell, who got Meli coasting past wrong-footed defenders for a third try.

It was all over four minutes later when second rower Dixon crashed over for another Saints try and Makinson's third goal made it 22-10. They would have been further ahead but for a terrific try-saving tackle by Broughton on Lomax.

The momentum was firmly with the home side by then and loose forward Wilkin took Lomax's short pass to grab a fifth try before an 80-metre by Gaskell set up the position for Dixon to claim his second.

Salford's defence cracked again in the final minute, enabling Laffranchi to score his first try for the club, with Makinson taking his goal tally to five.

Four more years: Wilkin has penned a new deal

England forward Jon Wilkin has effectively committed the rest of his career to St Helens after signing a new four-year contract.

The 28-year-old back rower, who will celebrate a 10-year testimonial with Saints in 2012, is now tied to the club until the end 2015.

Wilkin has made 231 appearances, scoring 74 tries, since joining Saints from Hull KR as an 18-year-old in 2003.

“It”s fantastic to pledge myself to St Helens for the next four seasons,” he said.

“I”ve had an amazing 10 years with them to date and am really looking forward to more success with them.

“We are all excited about the new season ahead at our new home, Langtree Park, and there is a real sense of expectation in the squad.”

The announcement comes just a week after St Helens scrum-half Jonny Lomax signed a new deal taking him to the end of 2015.

Saints chairman Eamonn McManus said: “Jon had a stand-out Four Nations recently where he more than proved himself against some of the best back rowers in the world.

“He is also now a senior member of the squad and a great ambassador for the club and for the game of rugby league.

“We are at the beginning of a new era for the Saints and Jon will be a key component of it.”
