Frankie Dettori has found a novel way to fill his time while he serves a drugs ban – by appearing in Celebrity Big Brother.

The 42-year-old is suspended until May after being sidelined following a failed test in September.

Dettori will be competing against the likes of X Factor star Rylan Clark and Steps singer Claire Richards.

Entering to a series of cheers from
the audience, the jockey admitted he was worried his fiery
Italian personality would land him in trouble in the house.

He
said: 'I don't know if I'm going to be a good housemate. I'm very
Latin, I blow hot and cold. I get on with people, I just don't know if
they get on with me.

'I'm looking forward to 2013, it's a new
start. I'll miss nothing about the outside world. I want to win!'

Dettori's decision to join the programme comes as a surprise after his agent ruled the jockey out last month.

Pete Burrell, who has acted for
Dettori for many years, said: 'Frankie has no plans to appear on this
show. We have not discussed it and I do not imagine we will be
discussing it.

'Frankie is out of the country for the next two months and is already looking forward to riding again in May.'

Broadcaster and former jump jockey John Francome expressed surprise that Dettori's name had been linked with the show.

He said: 'Frankie will undoubtedly benefit from a proper break from racing after more than 20 years as a jockey.

'The last thing he needs is to be locked away for ages with a load of idiots on this show.

A new start for racing as Clare Balding is the new face of Channel 4

Channel 4 count on Clare class to clear the first hurdle with racing coverage

A New Year and a new era for Channel 4 racing begin on Tuesday with a whimper and without the two most recognisable names and faces in the sport.

Frankie Dettori, who as a Flat jockey would in any case be on holiday at this time of the year, is banned for six months for a drug offence while John McCririck has been swept away by a broom wielded with perhaps hasty gusto by the incoming production company.

Love him or loathe him, ‘Big Mac’ boasts a profile few in horse racing can match.

Channel hopping: Clare Balding will front the racing on Channel 4

Channel hopping: Clare Balding will front the racing on Channel 4

The whimper for the relaunch of the sole remaining terrestrial coverage was guaranteed when Cheltenham postponed their New Year’s Day meeting on Monday due to waterlogged ground. Poor Clare Balding, and there has been no other occasion to think that this annus mirabilis.

Denied a proper ‘goodbye’ from her BBC racing role by the weather last week, she will be restricted to a Channel 4 ‘hello’ from Nicky Henderson’s stables in Lambourn and not from a race meeting.

Perhaps not the greatest omen. This is more a case of going through the top of the first fence rather than hitting the ground running.

La Balding will be fine. Better than that. She will be her usual excellent self, as less prejudiced observers recognised long before her unmitigated triumph at the Olympic Games.

Large than life: John McCririck will no longer be part of the Channel 4 racing team

A real pro, she thrives on good old-fashioned hard work, journalistic rigour and unbridled enthusiasm.

A small quibble. A little less of the breathless whispering, please.

Hushed tones have never been McCririck’s style and there was never any chance of this largest of larger-than-life characters going quietly.

‘It is clearly a case of age discrimination,’ the 72-year-old told Sportsmail. ‘It is illegal what they (Channel 4) have done. But what can you do I never missed a day’s work and I don’t think I was ever late. My ability is unimpaired. I am very sad.’

McCririck remains particularly aggrieved about both the manner of his dismissal and what he regards as some implied criticism. ‘Thirty years, no consultation and I am rung 30 minutes before a press release is distributed.

Missing face: Frankie Dettori will not be on Channel 4 as he is serving a six month ban

‘And they talk about looking for a more journalistic approach to the context. I won two British Press Awards and I was a former Campaigning Journalist of the Year. This was a deliberate attempt to humiliate and demean me. It is very hurtful.’

McCririck may come across as something of a dinosaur but he has never been frightened to get dirty at the coal face, asking the difficult questions, confronting the controversial issues and holding to account those deserving of close scrutiny.

Part of the team: Emma Spencer will be part of the Channel 4 team

He formed an odd but expert betting partnership with Tanya Stevenson, who will continue in her role. The problem for new producers IMG Sports Media is that they are following a hard act in Highflyer, who in 28 years won several prestigious television awards while establishing a deserved reputation for excellence.

This was never more evident than in last Saturday’s final programme from the old regime when three times racing writer of the year Alastair Down, John Francome and McCririck, the three main casualties of change, demonstrated sheer class with the most dignified of farewells.

Down, in particular, was at his lyrical and poetic best in talking about jump racing being ‘the very stuff of life’, ‘nourishment for the soul’ and a ‘magnetic pull stronger than the very poles’ against a pictorial background of wonderful memories from a high-quality back catalogue.

‘If the devil could cast his nets (he would catch) some wonderful people involved in making these programmes behind the scenes,’ Down said.

Line up: Channel 4 have taken over all racing coverage from the BBC

‘Haway the lads,’ the Newcastle United-supporting McCririck concluded as Stevenson moved to embrace the whiskered one.

It is doubtful whether his encouragement was intended for the lads, and lasses, who from today represent the terrestrial custodians of the Sport of Kings.

The public will be watching and so will racing.

Frankie Dettori banned for six months

Dettori lands six-month riding ban over failed drug test at Longchamp

UPDATED:

11:53 GMT, 5 December 2012

Frankie Dettori, the best known jockey in British racing, has been banned from riding for six months by the French racing authorities after his failed drugs test at Longchamp on September 16.

The worldwide ban, which has been backdated to November 20, will keep the 41-year-old three-time champion out of action until May 19.

It has been reported that the substance was cocaine and Dettori’s ban matches that of Kieren Fallon who was also suspended for six months on the first of the two occasions he tested positive for the drug while riding in France in 2006.

Positive: Frankie Dettori failed a drug test after riding at Longchamp on September 16

It means the Dettori will miss the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas next season and most of the important Classic trials.

But he will able to return in time for the both the Oaks, Derby and important Royal Ascot fixture.

Dettori’s solicitor Christopher Stewart-Moore said: ‘I have spoken to Frankie since the announcement was made and he has told me he fully accepts France Galop's decision.

‘He also accepts that he has let down the sport he loves and all those associated with it, as well as the wider public.

‘But most of all, and this is his greatest regret, he has let down his wife and children.

'He is enormously grateful for the opportunities that he has been given by owners and trainers over the years, and for the support of his many fans.

‘Racing has been good to Frankie and he knows that his privileged position brings with it responsibility.

‘For this reason he is determined to rebuild his reputation when he returns to the saddle.

‘Frankie could make excuses. He has, after all, regularly been tested for prohibited substances throughout his career.

‘He is clear, however, that the responsibility for his current situation lies squarely with him.

‘From the start of France Galop's inquiry he has acknowledged to them he has made a mistake and that the fault was his.

‘Finally, he has asked me to thank everyone for the many messages of support he and his family have received.’

France Galop announced Dettori’s suspension 24 hours after the jockey’s case had been heard by its Stewards’ Committee in Paris.

That hearing came a fortnight after the Medical Committee of France Galop ruled Dettori had a case to answer and just over three weeks after it first emerged on November 13 that Dettori had produced a positive test.

The jockey did not attend either hearing but gave evidence to the Medical Committee via a conference call during which it is understood he expressed a desire to rebuild his career.

Just how hard that will be, Dettori is about to find out.

The most vivacious and engaging personality in racing should be able to work his way back into the sport. Other jockeys, like Fallon, have proved that after a positive drug test.

The situation surrounding Dettori’s lapse – the erosion and ultimate ending of his position within Sheik Mohammed’s Godolphin empire – will elicit sympathy in some quarters and his ability as a jockey will ensure there will be owners and trainers happy to book one of the sport’s most naturally-gifted talents.

But the extended absence from the sport comes at a time when, post Godolphin, Dettori had hoped to establish himself as the go-to freelance rider in British racing and, maybe, even challenge for a fourth championship.

Potential rides will have to be offered to rivals and possibly be lost forever.

The rebuilding of Dettori’s wider image will certainly be difficult. The happy-go-lucky image of the father of five has been tainted.

Battler: Dettori is determined to bounce back

Battler: Dettori is determined to bounce back

Dettori produced the positive test on the day he had four unsuccessful mounts at Longchamp on Arc trials day.

It came 24 hours after Encke had won the St Leger at Doncaster for his then employers Godolphin.

The colt had been ridden by young French jockey Mickael Barzalkona, whose promotion within the Sheik Mohammed operation had increasingly undermined Dettori, who had lost his status as the stable’s No 1 jockey.

There has been speculation that the disappointment of missing the Leger winner – Dettori had finished third on John Gosden’s Michelangelo – may have led to a moment of madness from an emotional athlete at a low ebb.

Rumours of a split from Godolphin had circulated before the Derby in June when the huge operation failed to find a runner for Dettori to ride and handed the mount on Kailani, their only representative in the Oaks, to Barzalona.

Dettori’s only group one winner in Britain for Godolphin this season was Colour Vision in the Ascot Gold Cup and his paltry return of 51 winners was his worst since his plane crash season in 2000.

The split finally did come when Dettori chose to ride Aidan O’Brien-trained Camelot in the Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe in October, a horse owned by Ireland’s Coolmore Stud, the Sheik’s big sporting and commercial rival.

It appeared a calculated act which inevitably led to the announcement that Dettori’s hugely-successful 18-year association with Godolphin would end at the close of the 2012 season.

His last ride for the stable proved to be his final mount before his ban when unplaced on Cavalryman in the Melbourne Cup on November 6.

14:37 GMT, 4 December 2012

Frankie Dettori faces an anxious 24 hours before he learns the outcome of the disciplinary hearing into his failed drugs test.

The Italian did not attend Tuesday morning's 40-minute hearing held by the Stewards' Committee of the French racing authority.

But the 41-year-old's solicitor Christopher Stewart-Moore said he had received a 'sympathetic hearing'.

Stewart-Moore added: 'Out of respect to France Galop, we will not be making any comment until such time as France Galop make their announcement, which we understand will be tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.'

Dettori, the best known face in British racing, looks to be facing a worldwide ban of around six months after his positive test at Longchamp, believed to be for cocaine or a derivative of it, on September 16.

That is the length of the ban that Kieren Fallon was hit with by France Galop when he failed a test for cocaine for the first time.

Dettori appeared to accept a ban was inevitable when he accepted the decision of the medical committee to pass his file on to the stewards a fortnight ago.

But his legal team are believed to have made a case for any suspension to be backdated, possibly to as far as November 6 when Dettori took his last ride for Godolphin on unplaced Cavalryman in the Melbourne Cup.

An alternative possible start date would be November 21, the date Dettori was 'temporarily' suspended by France Galop after the medical committee hearing.

If France Galop accepted either scenario, Dettori would be able to return to the saddle in May, allowing him to take part in both the 2013 Derby and the Oaks as well as Royal Ascot.

However, the normal procedure in France is for a ban to start nine days after the final disciplinary hearing.

An outcome to the Frankie Dettori hearing with the French racing authorities appears unlikely to be announced today.

Dettori’s case is being heard by the Medical Committee of France Galop, made up of three doctors, at its Paris HQ and was due to start at 11.30GMT.

Under France Galop procedure, if the Medical Committee finds a jockey guilty of a charge, he must face the Stewards committee which decides on punishment.

The gap between the two committees convening can be a least a week and up to a fortnight.

Dettori’s team had been hoping that the case could be expedited with both hearings being held on the same day.

Dettori, 41, the best known jockey riding in Britain and a public face for racing failed a drugs test, believed to be for cocaine or a metabolite of it, when riding at Longchamp on September 16.

The usual shroud of secrecy hangs over the internal workings of France Galop, who released minimal information when Kieren Fallon twiced tested positive for cocaine, incurring a six-month ban on the first occasion and 18 months the second time.

The official line from Godolphin was that 'the retainer was not really working', although Dettori was expected to continue working his present contract until the end of 2012.

The British-based jockey has won more than 500 group races in his career. He is best known for riding seven winners at Ascot in 1996.

Dettori partnered nine English Classic winners in the royal blue silks, including their first in 1994 Oaks victor Balanchine, and a total of 110 Group or Grade One winners for the owner.

Normal procedure is for the Medical Committee of France Galop to judge whether rider has a case to answer before the Stewards’ Committee is asked to decide on a penalty.

Frankie Dettori, having lost his high-profile job with Godolphin in painful circumstances, now faces a ban of up to six months at the very moment he was planning to revive his faltering career.

Dettori, 41, will appear before French stewards on Tuesday after failing a drugs test at Longchamp on September 16.

Given their zero-tolerance policy on banned substances, they are unlikely to treat him leniently.

They banned former champion Kieren
Fallon for six months in 2006 after testing positive for traces of
cocaine, then hit him with an 18-month suspension when he offended
again.

When I worked with Dettori on his
autobiography a few years ago, he likened his job with Godolphin to
driving a Ferrari in Formula One.

If the hearing in Paris goes against
him, he may soon find that he is unable to drive the equine equivalent
of a Ford Fiesta until the end of May.

These are desperate days for Dettori.
His future is in the balance, his reputation as one of sport's good
guys is being questioned and he will be hurting as never before
following the events of the past month.

People imagine that Dettori has a constantly sunny nature.

Yet while we worked on his book, he
revealed a bleaker side of his character, which sometimes leaves him
wanting to hide from the world.

Glory days: Frankie wins the Epsom Derby on Authorised

Glory days: Frankie wins the Epsom Derby on Authorised

He spoke with searing honesty of his
despair after a miserable start to the season in 2003 following his
success on Moon Ballad in the Dubai World Cup.

Rides were sparse, winners
increasingly elusive and doubts were aired about his commitment. It left
him spiralling into depression.

He admitted: 'I was in turn
depressed, lethargic, moody and angry. I felt that everyone was trying
to jump on my back at the same time and squash me, all making out that I
wasn't interested in riding day to day. I care like mad about my
riding. I love racing and I love my job, and it hurt like hell that
people couldn't see it.'

Nine years later, he has endured a
miserable season that has seen him largely overlooked by Godolphin in
favour of two much younger rivals.

The writing was on the wall from the moment Mickael Barzalona won the Dubai World Cup for Godolphin in March.

In June, Dettori was left idle as Barzalona rode for the team in the Derby.

Then came the body blow in September, when Barzalona landed the St Leger ride on Encke, with Dettori again out of favour.

He has always been a confidence
rider, so by choosing others ahead of him in the races that matter most,
Sheik Mohammed was sending a public signal that their old allegiance
was nearing its end.

It was hardly the greatest surprise when Dettori reacted by taking the ride on Camelot for Aidan O'Brien in the Arc in Paris.

The truth is that Dettori has never
really enjoyed the daily slog to distant outposts like Folkestone or
Catterick in midweek for a couple of ordinary mounts.

And for a number of seasons he has
not often been required to do so. For more than 20 years he has been a
Group One performer, riding at the highest level.

He needs the biggest stages to showcase his talents.

In 2003, he turned his season around
in spectacular style and will need all the single-minded determination
he showed then if he is revive his fortunes this time.

A period of enforced idleness will
allow him to consider other options away from the racecourse and, in the
short term, he could probably earn as much from showbusiness and other
interests as he has done on the track.

Dettori has sometimes hinted that dropping down a league or two as a jockey would be too painful for him.

He once told me: 'I've been so spoilt with the horses I've ridden that I couldn't settle for second-best.'

Frankie Dettori has been left devastated by the drug-test failure that is threatening to derail his career.

The 41-year-old three-time champion jockey is facing a hearing before the medical committee of the French racing authorities next week after testing positive for cocaine or a derivative of it while riding Longchamp on September 16.

Dettori is currently in Dubai where he is holidaying after riding in the Melbourne Cup on November 6.

Dettori’s withdrawal from his mounts at Doncaster on Saturday was unrelated to the imminent disciplinary hearing.

It is understood the France Galop disciplinary process will be in two parts with a Medical Committee meeting next week followed by a Stewards Committee meeting – which could be anything up to to a week or 10 days later – where any suspension arising from the positive test will be handed down.

Dettori received police caution for

‘The biggest thing about not being retained by Godolphin is that I can kick on five days in advance and make it my aim for him to ride the best horses.

‘Godolphin don’t let me know what he’s riding until 48 hours beforehand. He rides for a hell of a lot of trainers here in Newmarket and has links all over the world.’

In what looks a statement of intent, Dettori, champion in 1994, 1995 and 2004 but often living off crumbs this summer, is booked for all seven races at Newmarket on Wednesday, his first mounts since his split with Sheik Mohammed’s stable was announced.

The rides include bookings for John Dunlop, Tim Easterby, Brian Meehan, Gerard Butler and, significantly, Charlie Hills, who has rides to offer next year with the retirement of jockey brother Michael.

They include exciting Rockfel Stakes winner and 1,000 Guineas prospect Just The Judge. Dettori, already due to ride Godolphin’s Artigiano at next month’s Breeders’ Cup, will now also ride Ralph Beckett-trained Waterway Run.

Meanwhile, David Redvers, racing manager to Sheik Fahad Al Thani and his family’s Qatar Racing interests, confirmed a deal is close to signing Jamie Spencer as retained rider but added it would be ‘barking mad’ not to book the freelance Dettori if he was available and they needed a jockey.

Redvers said: ‘Although we are in negotiations with Jamie, there is no contract signed yet. I expect we will have something put to bed by the end of the week.

‘But if whoever we retain is unable to ride and Frankie is available, you’d be barking mad not to book him. He is still the best jockey riding and with something to prove he will be going all guns blazing.’
