Fernando Torres wants to quit Chelsea to return to Spain

EXCLUSIVE: Farewell Torres Chelsea's 50m flop wants return to Spain as he faces axe for crunch Juventus clash

Fernando Torres is facing the embarrassment of being axed for Chelsea's crucial Champions League clash against Juventus as it emerges he wants to move back to Spain.

Sportsmail exclusively revealed last week how Blues owner Roman Abramovich has accepted his 50million gamble on the Spain international has failed and was ready to move the striker out of Stamford Bridge.

And Torres has his heart set on a return to Spain as he looks to recapture the form that made him one of the most feared strikers in the world.

The idea of having the Chelsea
failure on his CV certainly irks the ex-Liverpool striker, but he has
privately accepted he must leave west London, with Spain his preferred
destination.

Potentially, Torres could return to Atletico Madrid as part of Chelsea's move to sign Radamel Falcao.

Torres' disastrous spell at Stamford
Bridge plummeted further on Saturday after putting in another lacklustre
display in the 2-1 defeat against West Bromwich.

And Roberto Di Matteo is today giving serious consideration to dropping the club's record signing for the trip to Turin.

Last week, Di Matteo admitted
any manager would love to have Falcao in his team as Chelsea
step up their interest in the Atletico striker.

Abramovich is ready to concede his 50m gamble on Torres has failed and the Blues owner will make funds available for Di
Matteo.

Manchester City and Real Madrid are also
interested in the 26-year-old Falcao, who scored a stunning hat-trick
against Chelsea in the European Super Cup.

On Friday, Di Matteo said: 'Falcao is one of the best strikers,
probably, in European and world football. His ratio of goals per game is
quite impressive not just this season but over the last three years, at
Porto and Atletico Madrid. If you ask any manager, he'd have him in his
team.

'I know the window's nearing and there'll be a lot of speculation for our club, but whatever we do we'll keep it behind closed doors.'

Atletico’s prized asset is impressed
by the Blues' ambition, saying: ‘Chelsea are champions of Europe and
there is not much more to say than that. Even after winning the
Champions League they still go and sign players of the highest quality.
Their ambition is clear.

‘I would not be worried about the
physical aspect of the Premier League. I have scored goals in
Argentina, Portugal and now Spain. I am confident I can adapt my game to
any league. I would welcome the challenge of the Premier League.

'I
was also a big fan of Gianfranco Zola when I was growing up. I have
watched the Premier League for a long time. There is so much quality and
it is such an exciting league. Of course it is nice to think I might
play in it.’

Financial difficulties mean Atletico
will almost definitely have to cash in on the 26-year-old, if not in
January then the end of the season. There is a 48m release clause in
Falcao’s contract.

Chelsea
will wait until the summer if necessary — such is the player’s loyalty
to Atletico he would first like to help them secure Champions League
football — but Abramovich’s desire to see him at Stamford Bridge is sure
to spell the end for the misfiring Torres.

After
Didier Drogba’s departure in the summer, Abramovich had hoped Torres
would finally rediscover the form that persuaded him to smash the
British transfer record to sign him from Liverpool in 2011.

But
the 28-year-old has shown little sign of improvement, scoring only four
Premier League goals this season and delivering another disappointing
performance against Liverpool last weekend.

It has been mooted in Spain that Torres
could return to his beloved Atletico, who sold him to Liverpool for 25m
in 2007, as part of the deal that takes Falcao to London. Chelsea
defender David Luiz would certainly welcome the arrival of Falcao.

After facing the Atletico star in the 1-1 draw between Brazil and Colombia in New Jersey on Wednesday night, Luiz said: ‘I’m happy when there are great names attached to Chelsea. He’s a great player. It would be a good choice for Falcao to come to Chelsea. All of the players would be happy.’

Bayer Leverkusen forward Andre Schurrle is a possible alternative but it is clear Falcao wants to move. In an interview earlier this week he told Radio Caracol: ‘The chance of playing in another league and for another club will come. I keep dreaming.’

AC Milan want Chelsea target Pep Guardiola as next manager

EXCLUSIVE: AC Milan put Man City and Chelsea on red alert with bid to land Guardiola

AC Milan have intensified their attempts to beat Chelsea and Manchester City to Pep Guardiola.

Sportsmail understands San Siro officials have made discreet overtures to the former Barcelona manager with regards to becoming their next boss.

Current incumbent Massimiliano Allegri is under increasing pressure after a sorry start to their Serie A season and a far from convincing opening to the club’s Champions League campaign.

And Guardiola is the overwhelming choice to replace Allegri amongst numerous Milan officials, with many wanting him in place as early as January.

Vice-president Adriano Galliani publicly backed Allegri on Monday, but in doing so said: ‘It is obvious we are not happy.’

Guardiola, who is midway through a 12 month sabbatical, has always maintained he will not return to football until next season.

And the Spaniard’s advisers have reinforced that view to the Rossoneri, insisting the 41-year-old will not consider any approach at the moment.

But the Italian club are keen to move quickly as they look to steal a march on Chelsea and Manchester City, who are both taking a keen interest in Guardiola.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich views Guardiola as his dream managerial appointment, despite the fact Roberto Di Matteo led the club to a Champions League and FA Cup double last season.

Sportsmail exclusively revealed last week that the former Spain midfielder’s favoured destination is Stamford Bridge.

Likewise, City’s Arab owners are huge admirers of Guardiola and with Roberto Mancini’s future far from secure, the Etihad Stadium club are also being kept in the loop with regards to the Spaniard’s future.

The Premier League champions' chances of landing Guardiola seemed to have improved after the appointment of City’s new chief executive Ferran Soriano and director of football Txiki Begiristain, who worked with the sought after boss at the Nou Camp.

Arsenal can challenge for the Premier League title, insists 11m Podolski

Lukas Podolski insists Arsenal can mount a sustained assault on the Barclays Premier League title – but whether captain Robin van Persie will lead the challenge remains to be seen.

While Old Trafford appears to be the preferred destination of the Dutchman, who announced earlier this summer he would not be signing a new contract, Manchester United will have to move closer towards the 20million at which Arsenal appear willing to do business for a player who could walk away for nothing at the end of the campaign.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has signalled his intent for the challenges ahead by adding experience in the form of German striker Podolski, France forward Olivier Giroud and Spain midfielder Santi Cazorla.

Podolski, 27, maintains this shows Arsenal can be thinking about an attack on the championship and not just securing third or fourth place again.

'The Premier League has five or six teams who can play for the title – and we are one of them. We really want to win this trophy.' Podolski said.

'I hope I can score a lot of goals and make some assists to help the club in the Premier League.'

If the Gunners are not to slip back to being also-rans again next season, then they will have to tighten up a defence which leaked 49 Premier League goals last term – some 20 more than champions Manchester City.

Laurent Koscielny found himself playing alongside several different central partners last season after injuries again took their toll at the back.

The France defender, 26, recently penned a new long-term deal and intends to do all he can to make the Gunners rearguard a secure unit.

'Now I know the Premier League – I am more mature and more physical,' Koscielny told Arsenal Player.

'You know I like to be tactical and technical in my position, but I have worked hard to be fitter and stronger.

'Now I want to continue my progression with this club.

'I know I played a good season last year, but I want to do more for Arsenal this year. I want to win a trophy.'

New Holland manager Louis van Gaal revealed Van Persie had no issue with being asked to play back-up to Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in the Oranje's future plans.

Speaking ahead of the friendly against Belgium, Van Gaal told reporters, as quoted by De Telegraaf: 'I had a fantastic conversation with Robin. I had to tell him that his situation has changed and that I prefer Huntelaar for now.

'It was a great talk not just about football, but also about life in general.

'I was pleasantly surprised. This was probably one of the best conversations I have ever had with a player.

'It is pretty rare to have such a good talk with a player.

'I told him that the best player plays, but that his situation can quickly change.

'If the manager thinks he ought to be then I am sure he will be at the level of this squad. It is not our responsibility to say anything more.

'The club and the manager are those that decide what is best for the team to move a step forward.'

Casillas was discussing Madrid's expectations for the new season, during which they hope to keep ahead of rivals Barcelona, whom they beat into second place for the first time in three years last season.

He added: 'Our goals are similar to those last year. We are hoping to move a step forward like we have in the other seasons since Mourinho has been with us.

'We want to win the league again, the Super Cup and then after two years of arriving at the doors of the Champions League final, we want to reach the final of Europe’s main competition.

'I think we have extraordinary fans, a magnificent stadium and an incredible squad. With all of this it is clear that this team deserves a European Cup, but there are many teams fighting for this title.'

QPR consider ground share for new stadium

QPR consider ground share as they explore new stadium options

UPDATED:

16:22 GMT, 6 June 2012

QPR hope to make their potential new stadium available for other events, and have not ruled out the possibility of a ground share.

Multi-millionaire Tony Fernandes bought QPR last summer and ordered the club to start planning for a move from their current Loftus Road home, which holds just over 18,000.

Having the smallest ground in the Barclays Premier League is inhibiting the London club's growth and Beard wants to build a new stadium which brings in extra revenue from as many sources as possible.

Plans: Owner Tony Fernandes wants the club to find a new home

Plans: Owner Tony Fernandes wants the club to find a new home

'To have a stand-alone football stadium that only hosts 19 home domestic matches a season would probably not make the numbers work,' chief executive Phil Beard told the London Evening Standard.

'What is important is that it is the home of QPR but it will need to have facilities to do other things as well.

'A full-on ground-share is more challenging, but I am hoping to emulate an entertainment destination model where you roll the pitch away and use it for other things.

'Look at (Arsenal's) Emirates Stadium. They hosted Coldplay for three nights – that is the sort of activity you need to host to generate the revenues to make the club sustainable and ultimately invest in the team going forward.'

Finding a large space to build a stadium of up to 45,000 will not be easy, but Beard was quick to allay fears the club would be moving far away from their west London roots.

'The criteria is that we need to find somewhere that hopefully isn't too far from Loftus Road,' he said.

'Our fanbase is a very passionate, loyal and local one. We need to stay in the area if we can. That is almost a must.'

Meanwhile, Rangers announced that defender Bruno Perone has left the club after his contract expired.

The 24-year-old joined from Brazilian side Tombense last summer but only made two appearances for QPR.

The European champions have been tipped to make the 35million-rated hot shot their next signing, after wrapping up a 32m deal for Lille playmaker Eden Hazard.

The Madrid manager was in Germany to watch Brazil’s 3-1 win against Denmark on Saturday, with the Spanish press reporting that he was taking a closer look at Sao Paulo playmaker Lucas Moura.

However, the 19-year-old had a quiet game and is unlikely to leave Brazil for another two years – and Fonseca claimed Mourinho was really focused on Hulk.

‘Jose Mourinho was not there for a stroll,’ said Fonseca. ‘Mourinho was in Hamburg to see several players and, of course, he also went to see Hulk. It was he who stood out.’

Qatari club Al Sadd have confirmed the signing of former Spain striker Raul from the start of next season.

The 34-year-old announced last month that he would be leaving Schalke at the end of the campaign, despite having proved a hit in Gelsenkirchen since arriving from Real Madrid in 2010.

His destination was unknown, but Al Sadd said on their website that he will be their player for the 2012/13 campaign.

A new chapter: Raul

A new chapter: Raul

He will be unveiled at a press conference on Sunday.

'Al Sadd will hold a press conference on Sunday, May 13 to present Spanish star Raul Gonzalez, who is contracted to the team for the 2012/13 season,' the club statement read.

Raul revealed at a press conference on April 19 that he would play his club football outside Europe for the first time next season, adding that the time was right to move to 'a less competitive league' after turning down the offer of a new deal from Schalke.

He insisted being able to spend more time with his family was the key factor in his decision, and that his eventual destination would depend more on them than on money.

'I definitely have the self-confidence to play in a tough league, but it is more about the family,' he said.

'I have not been able to spend much time with them lately. The Bundesliga is so demanding that you cannot spend so long with them.

'We will now look at the offers and see what gives me the most time for family life.'

Raul attained legendary status during his many years as a first-team regular at Real Madrid, and left the Bernabeu holding club records for appearances (741) and goals (323).
