David Price has been granted the chance to exact immediate revenge on Tony Thompson after a rematch was agreed for July 6.

The Liverpool heavyweight suffered his first professional defeat when he was knocked out by the American in the second round last month.

But victory for Price at the second time of asking should catapult him back into the mix for world honours.

The 29-year-old's promoter Frank Maloney admitted the fight, which will take place at the Echo Arena, was difficult to make.

'There was a rematch clause in the original contract, but it was still far from easy to make it happen,' he said.

'Because it was such a big win for Thompson there was a lot of interest in him from rival promoters, but we got there and he has signed.

'There were other options for David also, but he and his trainer Franny Smith were adamant they wanted Thompson again.

'There have been a lot of nasty things said about David since the first Thompson bout, but this proves his fighting heart.

'Not many fighters have begged me to jump straight back in with someone who has beaten them.

'The fans in Liverpool have been magnificent to David over the last 12 months and I am sure they will respond and get behind the fight.'

Barcelona captain Xavi Hernandez has added his voice to the condemnation of Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir’s sending off of Nani against Real Madrid.

The Spain international told Mundo Deportivo: 'Nani is going for the ball so I think it was very harsh. It changes the game; a red card should be for something much worse. There is so little between the big teams in Europe that a sending off makes so much difference.

'I always say with these incidents that you have to look at the intention of the player. Nani is looking at the ball and not at the defender. For me it is very harsh.'

Controversy: Cakir gives Nani his marching orders on Tuesday night

Barcelona benefited from a similar sending off two years ago at the semi-final stage against Real Madrid. But Xavi said: 'I don’t think it is the same because Pepe goes to make the foul. He can see (Dani) Alves throughout the entire incident.

'Nani, on the other hand, doesn’t. Nani sees the ball and wants to control it. He is ‘playing’, not ‘defending’, he does not set out to foul the opponent so the two incidents are completely different.'

Meanwhile, Cakir defended his decision today, telling newspaper AS: 'I feel good and I do not doubt my decisions. Nani's red was correct. The world will realise the truth over time.'

The official also brandished other high-profile red cards in matches involving English teams, dismissing John Terry in Chelsea's Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona last season, Mario Balotelli in a Europa League game against Dynamo Kiev and, earlier this season, Steven Gerrard during England's World Cup draw with Ukraine and Gary Cahill in the Club World Cup defeat to Corinthians.

'In the previous games with the English teams there was no unfair decision,' Cakir added.

'What decision was incorrect The red to Terry or Balotelli I don't think I made a mistake in showing those cards and sending them off.'

Regarding being at the centre of controversy this week, Cakir said: 'It hasn't made me feel sad. I don't think about it.

Fergie CHARGED by FA over blast at 'shocking' linesman who was 'never going to give United a decision'

Sir Alex Ferguson has been charged by the FA over his rant at the linesman during their draw at Tottenham this month.

The Manchester United boss could now be fined for misconduct after attempting to explain his comments.

Ferguson was furious that referee's
assistant Simon Beck did not flag for a penalty when Wayne Rooney was
challenged by Steven Caulker.

By
claiming that United 'were never going to get a decision' from Beck and
'he gave them everything else', the FA believe that Ferguson may be
guilty of questioning his integrity.

An FA statement read: ‘The FA has
today charged Sir Alex Ferguson in relation to post-match media comments
made following Manchester United’s game at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday
20 January 2013.

‘It is alleged the Manchester United
manager breached FA Rule E3 in that he implied that the match official
was motivated by bias.

‘Ferguson has until 4pm on Friday 1 February 2013 to respond to the charge.’

Earlier
this month Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini escaped punishment
when asked to explain a comment that referee Kevin Friend 'ate too much'
before the Boxing Day defeat at Sunderland.

On the same day, Ferguson angrily
confronted referee Mike Dean at half-time of United's game with
Newcastle but the FA took no action.

However, their legal team decided to
take the matter further on Monday after analysing his remarks following
the 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane.

'The stand-side linesman never gave us a thing all day,' said Ferguson.

'I think he had a shocking game. I'm
disappointed in his performance, I really am. We've got that history
with him. He never gave offside with (Didier) Drogba at Old Trafford
when he was three yards offside. Everyone remembers that. I certainly
do.'

The decision not to award what
Ferguson described as 'a clear penalty' proved costly for United when
Clint Dempsey struck in injury time to cancel out Robin van Persie's
first-half header.

United defender Rio Ferdinand backed
his manager saying: 'It was a 100 per cent penalty. I cannot believe he
didn't give it. The linesman didn't really help us on the near touchline
at all.

'He maybe wasn't going to put his flag up, but I'm disappointed that the referee didn't give what was a stonewall penalty.'

Ferguson has been banned from the
touchline on five occasions in the past, most recently in 2011 when he
was found guilty of questioning the integrity of referee Martin
Atkinson.

Barnsley's week to forget ended on a high as Chris Dagnall's brace earned the managerless Tykes a 2-0 derby win over Leeds.

Both Terry Butcher and Sean O'Driscoll have turned the vacant job down in the last seven days, but the man currently holding the fort, Dave Flitcroft, is making a more than fair case for getting it himself.

This was his second win in succession and his side deserved to score more than the two given to them by Dagnall's first league goals of the season and his first since the opening day.

In fact, it was the 38-year-old Flitcroft and not 64-year-old Neil Warnock in the opposition dugout who appeared the shrewder boss. Midway through the second half, in the midst of a third defeat in a row at Oakwell, the Leeds fans sang 'Warnock, time to go'.

There was no obvious sign of the
turbulence to have affected Barnsley this week throughout as they
started well and carried it on until the end.

They tested Paddy Kenny after just 80
seconds when Jim O'Brien's deflected effort sent the goalkeeper flying
away to his left, while Stephen Dawson had legitimate claims for a
penalty turned down when he appeared to be felled by Luciano Becchio.

O'Brien then shot over and Dawson was
denied by Kenny as the Tykes mounted some pressure which nearly
culminated in a goal as Marlon Harewood, almost in slow motion, drifted
in from the left and cracked a shot against the foot of Kenny's
right-hand post.

Flitcroft's anguish at his side's
near misses was evident and his mood did not improve as Jim McNulty's
header was cleared on the line by Rodolph Austin.

Even the loss of O'Brien to a
nasty-looking injury following a collision with Lee Peltier did not
affect the home side, with Dagnall twice going close at the end of a
first half that was completely one-sided.

Leeds' first effort on 48 minutes
drew ironic cheers from their fans as debutant Ross Barkley dragged a
25-yarder just wide, with the Everton teenager then going closer as he
spun onto Becchio's knockdown and crashed a shot against the bar from
six yards.

United's presence as an attacking
force was a fleeting one, though, and as the clock ticked into the 63rd
minute, Barnsley got the goal they deserved.

Dagnall ran at Sam Byram and turned
inside out on the right-hand side of the area. Byram kicked him and once
Dagnall had wrestled the ball from Dawson and Harewood he sent Kenny
the wrong way.

Even 1-0 was harsh on Barnsley and
they put that right just three minutes later, with Byram again given a
torrid time by Dagnall. The former Rochdale striker stripped down his
inside after Harewood's touch and duly put a shot across Kenny into the
bottom corner.

Barkley offered Leeds' best response
with a cute curling effort which went just over but it was Barnsley's
day and they would have ended it with a third goal had Harewood shown
better accuracy after sprinting past Jason Pearce.

Substitute Jamie Ward scored from the penalty spot to secure a point for Derby at Charlton.

The Rams were staring at a third straight defeat after a Danny Haynes wonder-strike put the hosts ahead in the first half.

But after the break Charlton defender Michael Morrison fouled Richard Keogh in the area to earn a second booking and Ward, back after three months out injured, tucked in the spot-kick.

Charlton kicked off on the back of three straight defeats but took the lead when Haynes conjured up a stunning solo goal.

There seemed little danger when the striker collected the ball back in midfield with 19 minutes on the clock.

But he drifted out wide before swiftly cutting back inside and unleashing a rocket from 25 yards into the top corner.

However, Haynes' afternoon was cut
short after just half an hour when he pulled up with a hamstring injury
and was replaced by Bradley Wright-Phillips

Meanwhile, Derby were keeping Ben Hamer busy in the Charlton goal.

The keeper had already tipped over an
early Ben Davies free-kick, and was then called into action to deny
Theo Robinson and Nathan Tyson as the Rams pushed for an equaliser.

Yet Charlton could have doubled their
advantage before half-time when Yann Kermorgant chipped into the area
but Morrison glanced his header wide.

Wright-Phillips was then put through
by Johnnie Jackson but Derby keeper Adam Legzdins charged out of his
goal to make a fine block, before Lawrie Wilson fired narrowly wide.

Charlton began the second half like
they finished the first, with Wright-Phillips crossing for Jackson whose
header was off target.

Left-back Cedric Evina then forced Legzdins to tip his fierce drive over the top, and Dale Stephens' volley flew too high after he was teed up by right-back Chris Solly.

The industrious Bradley Pritchard charged the length of the field before winning a free-kick on the edge of the Derby area, from which Jackson was denied by another fine block from Legzdins.

Pritchard went even closer just after
the hour mark when he met Wright-Phillips' cross but crashed his shot
against the crossbar.

But the match turned in the 69th
minute when Morrison, who had been booked in the first half, slid in on
Keogh and was shown a second yellow card, followed by a red.

Ward, who had replaced Will Hughes just two minutes earlier, stepped up and sent Hamer the wrong way from the spot.

Derby could have snatched the win with eight minutes to go but John Brayford's header came back off the post.

Marcus Tudgay's late goal condemned Millwall to a surprise defeat as Barnsley gave their npower Championship survival bid a welcome boost.

Tudgay struck in injury time after Chris Wood appeared to have salvaged a point for the Lions, who had lost just once in their previous 16 matches.
Barnsley led through a first-half goal from Stephen Dawson, shortly after Millwall's Darius Henderson had missed a penalty.

To make matters worse, the hosts had defender Adam Smith sent off for a rash challenge early in the second half.

Wood tucked in his third goal in two
matches, and his 11th of the season, 10 minutes from time but Tudgay had
the last word as Millwall slipped out of the play-off places.

Millwall were surprisingly lacklustre
for a team in such fine form, unbeaten at home in their previous seven
games, and it was Barnsley who made the brighter start with two good
chances falling to Tudgay in the first 10 minutes.

First Lions goalkeeper David Forde
did well to tip Tudgay's shot round the post, then a mix-up in the
Millwall defence saw the ball fall to Tudgay again, but this time the
striker blazed his shot over the crossbar.

The hosts should have taken the lead in the 25th minute after Henderson was fouled in the area by Scott Wiseman.

But Henderson, back in the Millwall side after a spell out with a hamstring injury, blazed the spot-kick over the crossbar.

And the Lions were made to pay five minutes later when Barnsley broke at the other end through Tudgay.

The ball eventually fell to Jim
O'Brien, whose shot was well saved by Forde, but Dawson was on hand to
tuck away the rebound for his third goal of the season to give the
visitors the lead.

Millwall attempted to hit straight back and midfielder Liam Trotter shot narrowly wide from just inside the box.

Tykes goalkeeper Luke Steele was then called into action to make saves from Henderson and Shane Lowry.

Barnsley had chances to add to their
lead before half-time but Forde saved John Stones' effort and O'Brien
crashed a shot into the side-netting.

Millwall's task got more difficult 10 minutes after the interval when Smith was sent off after he lunged in on David Perkins.

It looked like a 50-50 challenge but referee Trevor Kettle deemed it to be two-footed and produced a straight red card.

Barnsley sensed the chance of a rare win and Perkins drove the ball goalwards but his effort was kept out by Forde.

Perkins then crossed for Tudgay but
his ambitious header from the edge of the area flew wide, before Chris
Dagnall missed the target from close range and Stephen Foster fired over
the top.

Barnsley were caught out 10 minutes
from time when Wood latched onto Dany N'Guessan's ball over the top and
coolly finished past Steele.

But all Millwall's hard work was undone when Tudgay rifled the winner past Forde in the 93rd minute.

The goal lifted the Tykes to the same
points tally as Tudgay's former side Sheffield Wednesday, although they
remain in the bottom three on goals scored.

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini insists the title race is far from over, despite that derby defeat by Manchester United.

And he warned that his team will get even better after they delivered the perfect response with their best performance of the season in a 3-1 win at Newcastle United.

They could easily have reached double figures by half-time but for sloppy finishing and Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul.

Marathon not a sprint: Roberto Mancini is unfazed despite City trailing Manchester United by six points in the table

City took the lead in the ninth minute through Sergio Aguero, at the end of an 11-pass move and one of the passes of the season from Yaya Toure. Javi Garcia added a messy second from a corner and, after Demba Ba had given Newcastle brief hope in the second half, Yaya finally ended the contest in injury time.

Mancini, who left Mario Balotelli in Manchester, started with Aguero and Carlos Tevez and they inspired City to victory, the 13th consecutive win with the Argentinian duo leading from the front.

United maintained their six-point lead at the top of the Barclays Premier League table with their own 3-1 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford.

But Mancini warned the best is yet to come from his City players, who face Reading at home on Saturday and return to the North East on Boxing Day seeking revenge at Sunderland for last season’s New Year’s Day defeat.

Mancini said: ‘I think if we put our minds on the job we can do very well, like we did at Newcastle today. But if we think we can play with only one foot, it is difficult.

‘We felt it would be really difficult here because when you play against Newcastle after a defeat against United it’s clear that it will be tough. It was very important only to play like we did in the second half against United — and we did this. Sergio and Carlos play very well together and this is very important but we have also Edin (Dzeko) and Mario.

‘When he came on, Edin did very well and to win at Newcastle you need to play very well with your whole team.

‘It’s important they always play at 100 per cent with a good attitude.’

Garcia, who headed his first goal since his debut in September, added: ‘It was an important game after what happened against United. We had to show we could continue to have a winning mentality.

‘It’s normal to be feeling down after a result like that, but we had to lift our heads up. We had to continue to believe in ourselves and remain positive.

‘I don’t know if it was our best half, but we definitely played very well. If we maintain those standards and keep that attitude, I think we can chase down Manchester United and we are going to be very hard to beat.’

The only blow for City was the loss of Samir Nasri, who went off before half-time after tormenting Davide Santon. The former Arsenal midfielder will have scans on a groin strain and looks certain to miss the clash with Reading.

Leeds warmed up for their midweek cup date with Chelsea by getting back to winning ways in the npower Championship and ending Ipswich's three-match victory streak.

United host the Champions League winners, with whom they have a rivalry dating back decades, in the Capital One Cup quarter-final on Wednesday, and anticipation is high around Elland Road.

The gloss would have been taken off that occasion were Neil Warnock's men to have suffered a second straight defeat today, but thanks to on-loan winger Jerome Thomas they made sure they will go into their big week on a high.

Thomas, borrowed from West Brom, missed last week's loss at Derby but has now won all four of the games he has played for the Whites and had a starring role today, scoring one and setting up another for Paul Green.

The end scoreline was perhaps harsh on Ipswich, who had lots of the ball and could have done more had they been able to pick a pass in the final third, but their lack of a cutting edge cost them dearly.

Warnock had warned his players that a poor showing today would see them on the bench come Wednesday night, and although their start was not an exhilarating one, it was better than their opponents and they never looked back.

El-Hadji Diouf, fresh from signing a new 18-month deal yesterday, had United's first chance, getting on the end of Green's chipped pass to get through on Stephen Henderson's goal but the stopper spread himself well to close things down.

Diouf had the next opportunity too, although it was only a half one, rising to try and make something out of Sam Byram's punt forward but only finding the palms of Henderson.

There was nothing Henderson could do as Leeds took a 19th-minute lead, though, with Thomas obscuring his view of Tom Lees' header from Diouf's corner and touching it past him at the last second, giving him no chance instead of what was going to be a routine save.

The sheer number of balls Leeds were putting in the box were causing all sorts of problems for Henderson and shortly after he was indebted to the scampering of team-mate Aaron Cresswell, who got back to hack David Norris' header off the line after he had failed to properly deal with Michael Tonge's cut-back.

Goal grabber: Paul Green sealed the win for Leeds by scoring the second goal

Goal grabber: Paul Green sealed the win for Leeds by scoring the second goal

Short of the odd burst of pace from DJ Campbell Ipswich were offering little, and as they sat back they were fortunate not to be 2-0 down just before the break as Luciano Becchio – when all he had to do was find any inch of the goal – inexplicably skied a free six-yard header from Byram's cross.

The Argentinian was indebted to goalkeeper Paddy Kenny not long after as he tipped away Carlos Edwards' cross-shot, but he had his head in his hands again just after the interval as, when he managed to direct another Byram cross on target, he drew a brilliant save from Henderson.

Ipswich had found a way to stifle Leeds by this point, however, and started to dominate possession, if without any end product, and it was cruel on them when Green doubled the home side's advantage with 21 minutes remaining.

The Leeds crowd were moaning as Alan Tate hoofed a ball clear but, as Bradley Orr failed to mop it up, Diouf released Norris, he played in Thomas and in the blink of an eye his cross had been slammed into the roof of the net by Green.

Ipswich then had two glorious chances to make a game of it, with first Lee Martin and then Michael Chopra failing to beat Kenny from six yards, and that summed up their afternoon as Leeds eased it out.

Paying the penalty: Cazorla missed his spot-kick

West Brom defender Steven Reid has reignited the flames of the Santi Cazorla diving debate with a cheeky tweet alluding to Arsenal’s penalty shootout defeat to Bradford in the League Cup quarter-final clash at Valley Parade on Tuesday night.

On his personal Twitter account, Reid wrote: ‘Hmmmm #KARMA’.

West Brom were beaten 2-0 at the
Emirates Stadium on Saturday but the Baggies felt aggrieved after Santi
Cazorla went to ground easily under a challenge from Reid to earn the
Gunners a penalty, which was duly converted by Mikel Arteta to give the
Arsenal the lead.

But Reid appears to have taken some
pleasure in seeing Cazorla’s penalty saved by Bradford goalkeeper Matt
Duke in the penalty shootout, and may feel that Cazorla’s cheating has
come back to haunt him.

The miss would prove pivotal for Arsenal, with further failures from Marouane Chamakh and Thomas Vermaelen consigning the Premier League side to a shock defeat at the hands of League Two outfit Bradford.

Cazorla came in for strong criticism following his simulation against West Brom, and manager Arsene Wenger admitted that he would sit down with his Spanish star to eradicate the issue.

Wenger said: ‘I’m sorry if it was not a penalty,’ he said. ‘Santi told me he had been tackled and had lost his balance. He might have made a lot of it. I will look at it. Don’t worry,’ he said.

Albion boss Steve Clarke was less forgiving, stating that there was ‘Zero contact. Not even close’.
