Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi will not be sold in January under any circumstances, according to club president James Pallotta.

The future of the 29-year-old has been the subject of intense speculation ahead of the January transfer window, with Manchester City and big spending French club Paris St Germain among the interested parties.

The Giallorossi vice-captain has endured an unsettled season under new Roma boss Zdenek Zeman, struggling to fit into a 4-3-3 formation and missing a significant number of Serie A games through suspension and injury.

But Pallotta insists De Rossi has a key role to play as the capital club strive to finish in the top three and qualify for the Champions League. He told Corriere dello Sport:

'We have absolutely no intention of selling De Rossi. We have not had any contact from anyone and we have not received any offers. It is just speculation.'

De Rossi signed a five-year contract extension at the Stadio Olimpico in February to become the highest paid player in Italian football on an estimated wage of 10million euros per year. Roma stabilised an inconsistent start to the season to reach sixth place on the back of four straight wins, but Pallotta is clear that a Europa League berth will not suffice.

'We definitely intend to qualify for the Champions League,' he added. 'If we don't, we will be extremely unhappy.'

Manchester City could sell striker Mario Balotelli in January as manager Roberto Mancini has been told he must raise funds before buying players.

Mancini was told at his first meeting with new sporting director Txiki Begiristain last week that it will be a quiet January transfer window for the club unless he can raise funds first by selling players.

Inter Milan and AC Milan are both interested in taking Balotelli, 22, who is valued at 22 million by City.

City may delay buying until the summer, when they have a better chance of landing A-list targets Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Daniele de Rossi.

Mancini will be hoping Balotelli's form picks up in the next few weeks but he doubts the striker can fulfil his potential at the Etihad Stadium.

Balotelli is not even guaranteed a place against Tottenham on Sunday, which he hoped would be his 50th game for City.

The Italian has been Mancini's fourth choice behind Argentinians Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez and top goalscorer Edin Dzeko.

The former Inter Milan striker has been courted by cross-city rivals AC Milan just last week.

Balotelli left Inter under a cloud and AC Milan's chief executive Adriano Galliani expressed his 'love' for the controversial forward.

He said: 'I have a profound love for Mario Balotelli, but many loves in life don't always end well.'

Roberto Mancini will ask Manchester City director of football Txiki Begiristain to sign Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi in January.

City pursued the Italy star all last summer but he stayed put.

However, De Rossi, 29, has told friends in Rome he wants to leave his hometown club and will ask for a transfer.

Roma would want in excess of 20million and the player would expect to be paid around 100,000- a-week.

This could be a problem for City as they look to keep within UEFA's financial fair play guidelines.

Therefore, it is interesting to see whether Begiristain will sanction the move.

City manager Mancini met the former
Barcelona man for the first time on Wednesday to reflect on Tuesday's
2-2 draw with Ajax and to talk about their future working together.

There has been recent speculation
about Mancini's job prospects at City, especially with Begiristain's
former Barca colleague Pep Guardiola looking to return to the game next
summer.

However, it is understood Mancini was told he has nothing to worry about and to concentrate on this month's games.

City were encouraged earlier this week to hear that club general Franco Baldini had suggested that any offers for the midfielder would be considered.

Baldini told Sky Italia: 'Should an offer arrive for him, we will consider it.

'In summer we heard an offer from Man City and because we listened to it, it means we took it in consideration. Then we decided to give up.

'Should another offer will arrive, we will listen again it, but we could also decide to give up on it again.'

Italy 3 Denmark 1 – Mario Balotelli on target

Balotelli stars for Italy as Azzurri's qualifying campaign sparks into life

23:23 GMT, 16 October 2012

Mario Balotelli helped Italy get the convincing win they needed to silence some of their critics despite playing virtually the entire second half with 10 men at home to Denmark.

Two goals in the space of five first-half minutes from Riccardo Montolivo and Daniele De Rossi had them 2-0 up eight minutes before the break, although Denmark got a goal back in first-half injury time through William Kvist Jorgensen.

Then, just 18 seconds into the second half, Italy's Pablo Osvaldo was shown red for violent conduct after an incident involving Denmark's Nicolai Stokholm.

However, Cesare Prandelli's team,
largely unimpressive in their World Cup qualifying campaign so far, did
not let that throw them off their stride as Balotelli – making his first
appearance for Italy since Euro 2012 – fired in a third in the 54th
minute.

The mercurial
Balotelli's first contribution had been to concede a free-kick as
Denmark mounted an early attack but after Nicklas Bendtner fired wide,
Italy began to find their feet.

Montolivo tried a sighter from a long range before Stokholm blocked Osvaldo's shot to concede a corner.

Morgan
De Sanctis, starting in goal in place of the injured Gianluigi Buffon
for Italy, was called on to tip Christian Eriksen's 30-yard shot over
the crossbar.

Osvaldo
headed wide from Ignazio Abate's cross before Simon Kjaer got in a block
to concede a corner when Federico Balzaretti drilled an effort from
outside the area.

Denmark
threatened again just after the half-hour mark, with Kvist Jorgensen's
shot tipped over by De Sanctis before Bendtner headed over from the
resulting corner.

But moments later it was Italy who led with Balotelli reminding Italy why they had missed him, the Manchester City striker picking out Montolivo to lash the ball home.

Denmark had barely recovered from that when it became two with Andrea Pirlo crossing for De Rossi to head in from close range.

Denmark
twice threatened in quick succession with Lars Jacobsen shooting over
and Dennis Rommedahl sending an effort narrowly wide before they got
their goal, Kvist Jorgensen finishing from the edge of the area after
being picked out by Jacobsen.

Given their recent shaky form, Osvaldo's
red card might have rattled Italy when it came so soon in the second
half, but instead they pulled further clear, with Pirlo teeing up
Balotelli to fire a shot low into the net.

Denmark pushed for a way back into the game, but Michael Krohn-Delhi curled a shot over and Daniel Agger's more powerful effort was likewise too high.

Eriksen joined in with another shot from range that drifted over the crossbar and the chances began to dry up with Italy looking to consolidate their position.

Understandably, there was little ambition shown by the outnumbered Italians, but they almost nicked a fourth when Stephan Andersen fumbled Montolivo's long-range effort inside the final 10 minutes.

The win sees Italy move four points clear of Bulgaria at the top of Group B although third-placed Czech Republic, five points back, have a game in hand.

Denmark are in trouble with only two points from three matches.

Manchester City are considering making a move for Benfica defensive midfielder Javi Garcia.

City's interest in the 25-year-old Spaniard has been mentioned in the Portuguese press and Roberto Mancini has made it crystal clear he is interested in adding to his squad.

Jack Rodwell has been the only new signing Mancini has made and he wanted to add another midfielder in Daniele De Rossi but that avenue has been closed by Roma.

Record, a Portuguese newspaper, says Mancini's first team coach Fausto Salsano came to watch the midfielder during Benfica's 5-0 win against Vitoria Setubal on Monday.

Garcia's minimum release fee clause is 23.8million but City would be hoping to pay less for him.

He is contracted to the club until 2016 and is a fan favourite, so letting him leave Lisbon may prove to be an unpopular decision.

However, De Rossi does not want to leave his boyhood club, having been at the Stadio Olimpico since he began his professional career in 2001.

'I'm staying,' De Rossi said at a press conference. 'I never asked to leave.'

De Rossi signed a fresh five-year contract in February to quell speculation of a move but City have tested Roma's resolve with a substantial offer this summer.

'One club, the one you all know, made an enquiry. One or two others, but that was just talk,' added the Italy international.

'What I can promise everyone is that the day I want to leave Roma – whether it is to win the Champions League or make more money – I will say so in public.'

'This is a normal press conference for me, not the announcement of the Third World War. For me it's important to say my piece. I am here at Roma, I'm happy and never asked to leave.

'I don't know if club still want to sell me. Guessing they count on me since they gave me huge contract in February. Ask them.'

De Rossi has 79 Italy caps and has won the World Cup with his country in 2006.

New Roma coach Zdenek Zeman had previously expressed his belief that De Rossi would stay.

He said: 'I am convinced that De Rossi stays with us. He is very important for us and the club has not asked me anything about him. I think he will remain.’

Roma boss Zdenek Zeman insists he is confident that De Rossi, who only signed a new contract at the Stadio Olimpico in February, will stay at the Serie A club.

Roy Hodgson, in that round-about way of his, aired fears on the eve of this game that some of his England players might not see much first-team football this season.

So here was a friendly with a reserve-team atmosphere to get them accustomed to what lies ahead. Inside the half-empty Stade de Suisse, with chatter from the pitch audible in the stands, it was far removed from the carnival expected in Brazil in 2014.

Handing first caps to five players, Hodgson added new blood at the start of the road to Rio, and with his selection, posed questions to others about their plans for the future.

In a flap: Italy go ahead as Daniele De Rossi (fourth left) heads in

In a flap: Italy go ahead as Daniele De Rossi (fourth left) heads in

Players like Andy Carroll, Tom Cleverley and Adam Johnson were picked to start for England but are uncertain of starting for their clubs when the Barclays Premier League kicks off this weekend.

The same applies to Gary Cahill and England’s match-winner Jermain Defoe knows Tottenham are trying to add a couple of strikers to their squad.

Where does the arrival of Robin van Persie at Manchester United leave Ashley Young Probably not in his preferred central role, behind Wayne Rooney.

But take Johnson (I wish you would, thinks Roberto Mancini). He has started as many games for England as he has for Manchester City in the last six months.

Almost two years ago, in another Swiss city, the young winger came on, dazzled with his old-fashioned trickery and scored as Switzerland were beaten.

Rare start: adam Johnson (left) takes on Stephan El Shaarawy and Federico Balzaretti

Rare start: adam Johnson (left) takes on Stephan El Shaarawy and Federico Balzaretti

With dancing feet and an eye for goal, he looked a dangerous alternative to the pace of Theo Walcott and the industry of James Milner. Since then, Johnson has barely moved on.

Fabio Capello, having decided not to include him in the squad for the World Cup in 2010, recalled him and seemed to settle on his role as that of an impact substitute.

He was someone to send on when all else failed, in the hope that one of those snake-hipped dribbles might unlock a defence.

Like Capello, Hodgson had him on standby but opted not take him to this summer’s tournament.
At City, Mancini seems to have given up. Johnson has not started a Premier League game since March after a series of warnings from the manager about his late-night lifestyle.

The kids are alright: Roy Hodgson's faith in England's youth was rewarded

England’s youngest ever goalkeeper Jack Butland spoke with great maturity ahead of his international debut about his determination not to become ‘big time’.

Johnson is one of those who plunged into that trap after his transfer from Middlesbrough in January 2010. The 25-year-old started on the right wing and finished on the left. His stooping stroll makes him appear uninterested at times. He can be wasteful and he can be creative. Natural ability is not in question. Application sometimes is.

He had England’s first shot on target, collecting a pass from Frank Lampard, shifting the ball onto his left foot and driving it low. But it was not a difficult save for Salvatore Sirigu.

Italy left back Federico Balzaretti, so commanding when the countries met in Kiev in June, did not contain him well and was replaced at half-time. Johnson accelerated past Balzaretti on the outside to earn the corner from which Phil Jagielka equalised.

After 90 minutes, the winger can leave Switzerland satisfied with his contribution. Now what Is it back to City and the strongest squad in the country for occasional cameo role It is hard to imagine how he can make the team ahead of Samir Nasri or David Silva but the wages are probably very good.

Or does he seek a transfer A possible move to Everton has been mooted. He has to play if he wants an invitation to the party in Brazil. Only then can Hodgson tell if a lack of action has killed his progress or if he has simply reached his limit.

Cleverley is not at his limit. Nor is Carroll, who finished last season in terrific form but laboured through 45 minutes here like a striker in desperate need of time on the pitch.

It is not a new dilemma. The shrinking pool of talent for England managers has been a running theme in the Premier League era.

Promising future: Tom Cleverley (second left) celebrates Jermain Defoe's winner

England will always need this second tier of players when the tournaments come around because those limping out of a 50-game campaign are hitting the wall, physically and mentally.

It should not be a surprise to see bodies ailing, as with Lampard and Gareth Barry ahead of Euro 2012. It will happen again in Brazil.

Hodgson claims there is enough depth.

But are the players sharp and dedicated and hungry The England manager must hope so. Otherwise the road to Rio will end in more frustration.

Jermain Defoe blasted a brilliant winner as England secured a creditable win over Italy in Berne.

The 'home' international was Roy Hodgson's only warm-up game before the World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign kicks off next month.

The Italian's had knocked the Three Lions out of Euro 2012 in June, in a game which ruthlessly exposed the deficiencies in Hodgson's side.

However in Switzerland, England, captained by Frank Lampard after he missed the summer tournament through injury, were more than a match for the Azzurri.

In the first half, Phil Jagielka cancelled out Daniele De Rossi's effort with a stooping header of his own from a corner.

Gary Cahill had a second-half volley disallowed while Joleon Lescott also went close after the break, but was thwarted by the post.

Defoe also saw a strike chalked off before 10 minutes from time he broke clear and unleashed a stonking drive into the top corner from just outside the box.

Manchester City could finally grab Daniele de Rossi from Roma in a move that would pave the way for Nigel de Jong to join Inter Milan.

Roberto Mancini is a huge admirer of the Italy midfielder and only failed in a bid last summer because De Rossi wanted to stay in Rome for family reasons.

The situation may now be different as Serie A struggles to hold on to its star players, putting City back on alert.

A move for De Rossi could pave the
way for De Jong's exit. The Dutchman has insisted he is happy to stay
with the champions, but has seen opportunities limited as he enters the
final year of his contract.

Inter,
who have been priced out of moves for Arsenal's Alex Song and Gunners
target Yann M'vila, believe 7m could be enough to sign the 27-year-old.

Holland team-mate Wesley Sneijder has already given his backing to the deal.

'De
Jong is bravissimo,' said Sneijder. 'I've known him for seven years, we
have grown together and I can assure you that he is crazy – in a good
way – for football.

'If
a match is at half-eight in the evening, he wakes up at eight in the
morning and spends the whole day thinking only about how to win and give
his best.

'On the pitch he always plays with heart and if he came to (Inter) Milan it would be a pleasure for me.'
