Liverpool are giving a trial to Norway defender Vegard Forren with a view to a possible move.

There had been suggestions Forren was booked in for a medical at Melwood on Tuesday ahead of a 4.2million move from Molde but that is not the case.

He will train with Brendan Rodgers’ squad from tomorrow for a short period. Should he impress, the 24-year-old could yet be signed during the transfer window.

Forren has been on the radar of a number of English clubs in recent months, most notably Liverpool's local rivals Everton.

Manager David Moyes watched him twice
in the space of two weeks in November, once when Norway played Hungary
in Budapest, the other when Molde played FC Copenhagen in the Europa
League. Moyes took three of his coaching staff on the latter trip.

Rodgers, though, has been looking to
strengthen Liverpool’s defence in January, particularly as he will allow
Sebastian Coates to move on loan if a suitable opportunity arises.

‘It has been difficult for him to get
games and the best thing for Sebastian would be to go out and get his
games,’ said Rodgers of the Uruguay international, who was not included
in Liverpool’s 18-man squad for Sunday’s game at Old Trafford.

'But that might not be the best thing
for the club. I have got to protect the club, that is my job as
manager. We certainly won’t be left short but I feel for the guy.’

Fulham were also reported to have
lodged a 4million bid for Forren, who would link up with international
team-mate Brede Hangeland should he decide to move to Craven Cottage
over Anfield.

Forren has been capped five times by
Norway, after representing his country at Under-21 and Under-23 level.
He has also been linked with Fulham.

Everton have stepped up their pursuit of Vegard Forren after David Moyes led a high-profile delegation to watch the Norwegian defender.

The Everton boss went with assistant Steve Round and coaches Andy Holden and David Weir to see Forren, 24, in Molde’s 2-1 defeat by FC Copenhagen on Thursday.

Moyes also saw Forren play for Norway against Hungary 10 days ago. When asked about the trip, Moyes said: 'I get to a lot of games, don't I'

Mark Cavendish "non-existent" chance of World title repeat

World champ Cavendish says chances of repeat title are 'non-existent'

Mark Cavendish has played down his chances of retaining his world road race title in Holland, insisting they are 'non-existent' due to the gruelling nature of the Cauberg course.

Cavendish claimed the world champion's prestigious rainbow jersey by winning last year's race over a much more favourable course in Copenhagen, but is realistic about his hopes this time around.

Cavendish told Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad: 'The chances of retaking my world title are non-existent. Ten times around the Cauberg is just too much for me. We have to be realistic.

'I can't win, but I'm here out of respect for the jersey and because I'll be wearing race number one. I always enjoy racing in the colours of the national team.

'The Tour means a lot to my career, but as world champion you wear the most beautiful jersey ever for a year. The rainbow stripes have something magical. All great champions have worn them.'

The Great Britain team are expected to focus on trying to push recent Tour of Britain winner Jonathan Tiernan-Locke into medal contention.

Tiernan-Locke is better suited to the course, but still inexperienced over the 267km distance.

Petr Cech to have elbow operation in summer

Cech-out: Chelsea ask Czechs to rest No 1 keeper in bid to stave off elbow operation until summer

Chelsea are hoping that Petr Cech can last the season with an elbow injury before the Blues No 1 undergoes surgery this summer.

The European champions are hoping to manage Cech through the season and they have asked the Czech Republic to rest him from friendly internationals.

The Czech national coach Michal Bilek has agreed to Chelsea's request.

Worry: Chelsea are concerned that Petr Cech may not be able to cope through the season

'An investigation showed a bit of ossification in his elbow, so they (Chelsea) are planning a surgery in England after the season,' Krejci told the Czech news agency CTK.

'They have asked us if we could rest him in friendly fixtures. We have come to an agreement with coach Michal Bilek and decided to be on good terms with Chelsea.

'We are going to grant their wish and rest him.

'Petr cannot stretch the arm properly. If he has to stretch the elbow, it hurts him sometimes.

'There is nothing to be worried about, though. There is basically nothing that could make this problem worse.

'The only thing that could force an
immediate surgery is if the intensity of pain would get much higher or
if the elbow was blocked in some way.'

Cech captained the Czech Republic in
Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Denmark in Copenhagen, which
ended in a 0-0 draw, but he will sit out the Tuesday's friendly against
Finland.

Cech's fitness provides a concern for Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo, as Ross Turnbull and Henrique Hilario are the only viable replacements for the Czech No 1.

West Brom sign Dinamo Kiev left-back Goran Popov on a season long loan

West Brom snap up defender Popov after missing out on Oviedo to Everton

West Brom have signed Dinamo Kiev left-back Goran Popov on a season long loan with a view to a permanent deal.

Macedonian international Popov ends
Baggies boss Steve Clarke's search for a new left-back to provide
competition for current first choice Liam Ridgewell.

The 27-year-old has become Albion's sixth signing of the campaign after being granted a work permit and passing a medical.

Clarke has moved for Popov after losing out to Everton in the battle to sign Bryan Oviedo from FC Copenhagen.

He said: 'I've said many times over the past few weeks that we've been looking to bring in one more defender and I'm delighted we've managed to sign Goran.

'We allowed two left-backs (Nick Shorey and Joe Mattock) to leave at the end of last season so it's very pleasing we've got another naturally left-sided player within the group to give us more balance.

'We've now got good competition for places in all areas of the squad.'

Clarke added: 'Goran is a player the club have closely monitored for around three years so we know what we're getting.

'He has also given up the opportunity to play Champions League football with Dynamo Kiev to join Albion in the Premier League and he's determined to do well here.'

Albion sporting and technical director, Dan Ashworth, said: 'Goran first came to our attentions during our promotion season of 2009-10 (when with Heerenveen) but we missed out on him that summer when he joined Kiev.

'We've continued to monitor him and have seen him acquit himself well for Kiev in the Champions League and against Manchester City and Stoke in the Europa League.

'Goran is an established, experienced left-back who is tall, powerful, good on the ball and likes to get forward.

'I'm sure he will settle in really well with us in the Premier League.'

Former AEK Athens and Red Star Belgrade defender Popov played for his country at Under-19 and and Under-21 level and currently has 36 senior caps to his name.

The 22-year-old can operate at left-back and on the left side of midfield.

Oviedo said: 'I am so very happy. This is a very good opportunity for me.

'The last two or three days have been very stressful and tiring but I am so happy now. I am feeling good and right now everything is positive.

'I know a lot about Everton. I watch Everton games and Premier League games on the TV and it is a very good league.'

Oviedo's spell in Denmark with Copenhagen began in 2010 and has included a loan stint with FC Nordsjaelland.

He has won the Danish league title and two Danish Cups, played in the Champions League, and is a full Costa Rica international.

Everton assistant boss Steve Round revealed this morning that he, Toffees manager David Moyes and scouts had all been abroad to watch the player in action and Oviedo had not realised it was him they had had their eye on.

He said: 'I was feeling a little nervous because Everton are a very good team and a big club.

'Now I am feeling good, I am happy with everything.

'I knew that sometimes Everton were watching Copenhagen games but not especially to watch me.'

Referring to his versatility, Oviedo said: 'I am a player who likes to attack.

'I can help in attack but also in defence as well. I can play both positions.

'I played many years as a left-back, now (more recently) I have been playing further forward.'

He added: 'I need to come here and work hard for a place. I know there are very good players and I will need to train very well to have a chance of getting in the team.'

Everton's players will have to wait to meet their new team-mate as he is jetting off to play for his country in two World Cup qualifiers against Mexico.

Oviedo's transfer deadline day arrival takes the number of new signings for the Toffees this summer to four.

The Merseysiders have also recruited former Rangers forward Steven Naismith, brought back winger Steven Pienaar on a permanent deal from Tottenham and signed front man Kevin Mirallas from Olympiakos.

Anzhi are a particularly tough threat for Liverpool and they possess dangerous players, like Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o, Yuri Zhirkov and former Blackburn defender Chris Samba.

Magpies manager Alan Pardew watched the draw live on television with several of his players and said: 'My gut reaction is that the travelling is good, so I'm pleased about that – I didn't really want to go to the Ukraine or Russia or anywhere.

'The teams are of the standard you would expect in Europe so it's a tough-ish group, not the toughest by any means, but not the weakest so it's a test for us.'

Newcastle were last in Europe in 2006, the same year Pardew led West Ham into what was then the UEFA Cup.

'Last time at West Ham, we drew the top team in Serie A at the time,' he added. 'Palermo had the best team in their history at that point so we were unlucky!

'This draw – and the draw in the qualifier – has been a little bit easier on me and I'm pleased about that on a personal level.'

Fulham defender Brede Hangeland is some distance away from agreeing a new contract with the club, according to his agent Rune Hauge.

The 31-year-old Norway international has been at Craven Cottage since 2008 but his current deal expires next summer and Hauge was quoted on Norweigian TV channel tv2 as saying Hangeland was 'not even close' to penning a new contract.

Hangeland was questioned about the situation after he captained Norway in a 3-2 home defeat to Greece and was equally as non-committal.

'When we haven't signed a contract at this point, then it's fairly obvious that we haven't reached an agreement. Rune is right about that,' he said.

But the former FC Copenhagen defender did admit a decision about his future will be made at some point during the coming months.

He said: 'I am quite relaxed compared to many other players who begin to unwind as they have one year left on their contract.

'As long as I do not get injured there is no problem – I'll decide sometime during this year.'
