John Bishop had the Kop in stitches on Monday night after the comedian and Liverpool fan was hit in the face by a ball kicked by Anfield legend Robbie Fowler.

The unlikely duo graced the pitch at half-time during Liverpool's 2-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion.

Fowler and comedian Bishop were on the pitch at Anfield during the break to support Liverpool's 'Seeing is Believing' initiative.

Fowler, accompanied by his son Jacob, and Bishop took penalties while blindfolded during the interval to support the charity.

Liverpool had replaced their usual 'Standard Chartered' sponsors with the slogan 'Seeing is Believing' to raise money for the charity which seeks to eradicate avoidable blindness in developing countries.

The jerseys the players wore during a smash-and-grab defeat by West Brom will be auctioned to aid the cause.

Reds captain Steven Gerrard said
before the match: 'You realise at the time how difficult it is without
your sight. Especially doing activities.

'We were involved in a penalty shootout using a blindfold and it's so difficult.

'It
was really enjoyable to take part and very important for myself and the
club as well to play our part and try to help these people.'

Rafa Benitez could be inspired for Chelsea – Jamie Redknapp

Rafa a barmy appointment Not anymore… it could be inspired

Everyone, including me, thought Rafa Benitez was a ridiculous appointment. It could be inspired. There was only one place Chelsea could go – up.

Fernando Torres is scoring and playing David Luiz in midfield makes a lot of sense. There is lots to do yet but if they keep winning, Benitez will keep the fans happy.

Jose on tightrope

The Champions League tie between Manchester United and Real Madrid has been billed as Jose Mourinho v Sir Alex Ferguson.

But I'm not sure Mourinho will still be in charge by that time, having controversially dropped captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas, a club legend, against Malaga and lost 3-2.

Ox just needs more goals

Arsenal are back in their stride with wins over Reading and Wigan, and it was good to see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain starting both games. He is an exciting player and has had a good year, breaking into the England team.

Where he needs to improve is by scoring more goals. In his 43 games for Arsenal, the Ox has scored just five.

Becchio on the radar

A few Premier League clubs might have their eye on Leeds' Luciano Becchio after he scored two more goals on Saturday.

That's 17 for the season, his brace against Middlesbrough moving his team to within touching distance of the play-offs. I also liked the way he took his goal against Chelsea.

Happy for Hillsborough

I am delighted that the Hillsborough single He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother made it Christmas No 1. The Justice Collection, featuring comedian John Bishop, put a lot of effort into it and it's great that the money will go to the families of those who died.A lot of progress has been made this year by the families.

Stevie paints it red

When Steven Gerrard and I were at Liverpool together, we used to talk about getting out the spray can. It meant spraying the ball across the field and Gerrard is the best at that. He had that spray can out against Fulham. It was his and Liverpool's best game under Brendan Rodgers.

Evra's ups and downs

Patrice Evra was hero and villain for Manchester United against Swansea. He showed real determination and athleticism to score an excellent header but the Frenchman didn't track Jonathan De Guzman's run, meaning he had a clear run at goal. He didn't score but Michu bundled in the rebound.

Stay on loan, Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku has had a very successful loan spell at West Brom, scoring his sixth of the season to beat Norwich. Whether or not Chelsea call him back in January, the 19-year-old has proved he can more than hold his own. My advice to him would be to stay on loan.

A lengthy, showbiz-dominated Ryder Cup
gala dinner caused concerns in the European camp about the extended
time their team were required to attend.

The official function at Chicago's
Akoo Theatre was supposedly set up for players of both sides to make a
relative brief appearance on stage, allowing them to prepare properly
for three days of intense competition.

Star names: Justin Timberlake with Tiger Woods at the Ryder Cup gala

But before the sides were introduced to the audience, there were long monologues from host Justin Timberlake and comedian George Lopez followed by rock band Chicago playing a much longer than expected set of over an hour while Ryder Cup participants and partners waited their turn in the wings.

Worried European officials were looking at their watches, but, mindful of being the visitors, did not complain. The Europeans finally returned to their hotel almost an hour later than planned and were similarly later than scheduled on the practice range on Thursday.

Paul Lawrie's view was that the event had gone on 60 minutes too long.

Timberlake's crass interviewing technique, meanwhile, demonstrated that sport's obsession with celebrity is a problem on both sides of the Atlantic. The self-obsessed singer-actor asked captains Davis Love and Jose Maria Olazabal why he wasn't on their teams and even set up Love to praise him by wanting to know how he was doing as the team ambassador. Another naff moment saw him ask Sergio Garcia who would win an American football match between the Chicago Bears and Real Madrid.

The right time

Swiss watchmakers Omega, official timekeepers at Medinah, will not like their big competitors Rolex presenting European Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal with a commemorative timepiece. However, the gift was handed over at Gleneagles after his European team was announced, rather than on Omega's Chicago territory.

Obama barracked

President Barack Obama

It doesn't say much for President Barack Obama's popularity in his home town of Chicago that there was significant booing when his name was mentioned during the gala reception. Obama, criticised for playing over 100 rounds of golf during his first four-year term, declined invitations to Medinah because of his election schedule. Meanwhile, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Obama's former chief of staff, described the tournament as the Ryders Cup during his speech at the dinner.

Europe's leading men

A succession of European Ryder Cup leaders could come from Jose Maria Olazabal's vice-captaincy group at Medinah. Irishman Paul McGinley is favourite to head the team in 2014, with Darren Clarke in 2016 and Thomas Bjorn in 2018.

Ping-pong swansong

The start of the Ryder Cup today should mercifully bring an end to the interminable talk during the build-up about the Americans playing table tennis in their hotel team room.

There has been almost as much discussion about the merits of their players' ping-pong ability when measured against champion Matt Kuchar as there has been about the golf.

'The Ryder Cup is all about ping-pong,' said Bubba Watson. However the line about arch rivals Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson supposedly bonding over the table tennis net never rings quite true, although the pair get on better than they did.

One banker bet for a Ryder Cup being held near the sports mad city of Chicago is that the proceeds from the cavernous merchandise store at Medinah will break all records – not that the PGA of America will ever reveal the numbers. But with 50 busy cashiers on duty, takings will be around 2million per day, or 12m for the week.

Field work for FA

The FA, whose media work is fraught with club v country v stakeholder complications, have promoted talented insider Scott Field to head of communications. Field will take over some of the PR responsibilities of communications director Adrian Bevington, who is also managing director of Club England. But Mark Whittle continues as the high profile England spokesman in the FA reshuffle.

Walk on the wild side: Dominic King (left)

It's Saturday morning and an Englishman from Colchester is going for a walk. Nothing unusual about that, you might think. Sometimes a stretch of the legs and a bit of fresh air is what is needed on the way to the newsagents. It can do wonders for a hangover, too.

Dominic King plans to head along The Mall towards Buckingham Palace, around the Victoria Memorial and then up Constitution Hill to Hyde Park Corner, and then back again.

It is a pleasant stroll of a couple of kilometres, which he’ll do another 24 times at a speed of 14km an hour, which is faster than most people run.

‘Everything is within walking distance if you have the time,’ said comedian Stephen Wright. But King doesn’t have time. He is Britain’s sole Olympic representative in the strange, punishing and often forgotten sport of race walking.

The 29-year-old is hoping to do his country proud in the 50km event, the longest athletics challenge in the Games (the marathon is 42.195km). It is also one of the more mocked disciplines for the way competitors must swing their hips on a rolling gait to keep one foot on the ground at all times.

The technique looks vaguely like a gang of men are attempting to deliver golf balls clutched between their buttocks for a bet.

I defy anyone not to watch it and think surely it would be easier to run A sentiment that prompted one commentator to say it reminded him of ‘a contest to see who could whisper the loudest’.

But race walking isn’t a joke. It’s a serious business and has been part of the Olympic schedule since 1904. King has been training in the Pyrenees for the London event and is Britain’s No 1.

In echoes of the Brownlee brothers’ triathlon relationship, Dominic trains with his twin brother Daniel, who also happens to be the British No 2.

But Daniel missed out on qualification and King says: ‘I feel like I’ll be doing London for both of us. He’s my training partner and best friend.

‘It would have been the cherry on the cake for my brother to qualify as well. But there’s always Rio in four years, and I’m confident we can both get there.’

Dominic is the first British walker to compete in an Olympic 50km event since Chris Maddocks 12 years ago in Sydney.

Oh brother: Dominic and Daniel King compete in the same event and train together, like British triathlon medal heroes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee

Oh brother: Dominic and Daniel King compete in the same event and train together, like British triathlon medal heroes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee

Although he was disqualified from the 20km at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, King finished sixth four years later.

‘I learnt big lessons from 2002,’ he says. ‘I let the emotions overcome me and went off too fast, and ended up being disqualified. I will make sure that this doesn’t happen again.’

He set his personal best this year of 4hr 6min 34sec, but will have to go faster if he wants to be among the medals. While the King twins are relatively unknown in Britain, on the continent race walking can lead to great fame, or — as one athlete found this week — infamy too.

Italian Alex Schwazer sobbed in self-pity and shame after being caught taking the banned blood boosting drug erythropoietin (EPO).

The Beijing gold medallist had been involved in campaigns promoting healthy eating and was sponsored by the police, but he was kicked out of the London Games on Monday when his dope test proved positive.

Schwazer confessed he felt pressured by ‘expectations that I had to dominate even more than before. I couldn’t say no’.

Intriguingly, he admitted he had consulted with Michele Ferrari, the Italian doctor who also acted as a consulting physician for controversial cycling champion Lance Armstrong.

Disgraced: Former Olympic gold medal-winning walker Alex Schwazer

But Schwazer said he met with Ferrari ‘five or six times for technical advice’ about training, with the last contact in early 2011. He denied receiving the performance-enhancing drugs from Ferrari, who has been given a lifetime ban by the US Anti-Doping Agency and banished by the Italian Cycling Federation.

Schwazer, who lives with star figure skater Carolina Kostner, also revealed he had grown to hate race walking. ‘It was making me sick,’ he said. ‘I couldn’t stand the training any more. My girlfriend loves skating. I do the race work because I’m good at it, but I don’t like working at it.’

Schwazer may now have to hand back his gold medal from Beijing as his samples from 2008 are being re-tested.

But this is one scandal he will never be able to walk away from, even if he tries.

In his absence, Russia’s 25-year-old Sergey Bakulin is the favourite for gold, having become the youngest 50km world champion last year in a time of 3:41:24.

Win I’ve got a fat chance

I don't do breakfasts. I had my first morning tea and toast at the London Games on Friday and realised this is probably why I am not an all-conquering, multi-medal-winning Olympic legend.

The other night Usain Bolt spelled out what he had on the morning of his 100 metres victory: ‘I had plantain, some hash browns, and chicken wraps from McDonald’s — there were vegetables in there too, so don’t judge me.’ As if.

The American swimmer Michael Phelps, holder of more medals than any Olympian in history, starts the day with three fried-egg sandwiches, with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise. A five-egg omelette, grits, three slices of French toast and three chocolate chip pancakes. Oh, and coffee.

They may be at the peak of human achievement now, but I can console myself with the fact that when they stop running and swimming, they should be hugely fat.

The 20-year-old fan responded to a Tottenham fan on July 15 and although he shortly removed the comment from the social networking site, it has not escaped the attention of the FA.

'Arsenal's Emmanuel Frimpong has been charged under FA Rule E3 for improper conduct in relation to recent comments made on Twitter,” said a statement on the FA's official website.

'The allegation is that Frimpong
posted comments amounting to improper conduct and/or which brought the

or race.

'The player has until 4pm on 27 July 2012 to respond to the charge.'

The 20-year-old is recovering from a serious knee injury sustained while on loan at Wolves.

After posting a message on his official Twitter account which read 'if you going church today Pray For me Giving today A Miss', the Gunners midfielder retweeted a response from one Tottenham fan which read: 'I prayed you break your arms and legs', to which Frimpong replied '@ Scum Y**'.

It sparked a mass debate on the social network site among supporters from both Arsenal and Tottenham.

One was retweeted by Frimpong, which read: 'You can't go around wanting players to break limbs, no matter who you play for. embarrassed to be a yid right now!'

The term has been used for decades to identify Tottenham supporters because of the proportion of Jewish supporters at the north London club.

Last year, comedian David Baddiel launched a campaign to stamp out use of the word in football chants, which can be viewed as anti-Semitic.

However, many Spurs fans use the term 'Y** army' themselves as a 'badge of honour' and claim they are not offended by it.

Izzard has been a Palace fan for over 40 years and is relishing his new role at Selhurst Park.

'I am very happy to lend my support to Crystal Palace FC by becoming an associate director of the club,' said Izzard.

'With Dougie Freedman as our manager and the new young players coming up through our academy – I hope that Crystal Palace will be pushing forward to new heights with all of them succeeding to the best of their ability – and further.

'All I really want is for Crystal Palace to win every game from now until the end of time. That's all. I know that's a tough thing to ask but that really is what I want.

'You see, I've been a fan or a supporter of Palace since 1969. At times I've been a fan and at times I've been just a supporter because I'm afraid I'm a bad loser and if we don't win games – I don't deal with it well.

'I tend to swear in front of children and shout at televisions in pubs. I know everyone has to deal with this and I've tried to mature my behaviour as my life has progressed, but in this one area I am still like the teenager I was in the 70s, living and dying every week for the football games I was playing myself or watching Palace play.

'So I have circled the idea of trying to do something to help Palace for years and now I'm in. What I can actually do – I'm not sure. But if you know anything about me, I am a determined b****** and I don't like to give in.'

Phil Alexander, chief executive of the Eagles, said: 'I am delighted that Eddie has signed up to be an associate director at Palace. He is an iconic entertainer and we hope that he can find enough time during his busy year to attend as many games as possible.'

Sir Chris Hoy has defended his tax arrangements after it was reported that he received a loan from his own company.

Britain's most successful Olympic cyclist said neither he nor his company disguised remuneration and insisted that he takes his responsibilities as a taxpayer 'as seriously as I do as an athlete'.

He admitted taking a loan from his company in 2010 but said it was repaid in full in October 2011, adding that the practice is standard in most small companies in the country.

'The dividends that I took to repay the loan were in fact taxed at the highest rate,' he said.

'I saw an opportunity to buy property and with the guidance of my advisers I borrowed money from my company to do so. The loan was subsequently repaid shortly thereafter by declaration of fully taxable dividends.

'Everything I have done is as a UK resident, and is UK taxable and not offshore.'

Hoy said he felt compelled to respond when The Guardian published a story about his financial affairs.

His income-generating activities are organised through a UK-registered tax-paying company, and as such his finances are transparent and in the public domain, he pointed out.

'I am very proudly British and my responsibilities as a British sportsman do not stop once I step off the bike,' he said.

David Cameron joined a chorus of criticism of Carr whose tax arrangements were disclosed in The Times on Tuesday.

Describing them as 'straightforward tax avoidance', the Prime Minister said it was unfair on the people who pay to watch the comic perform that he was not paying his taxes in the same way that they did.

On Thursday Carr bowed to pressure and
issued a statement apologising for his actions, saying he had 'made a
terrible error of judgment'.

It
was also alleged this week that Take That stars Gary Barlow, Howard
Donald and Mark Owen, and the band's manager Jonathan Wild, invested at
least 26million in a scheme run by Icebreaker Management Services which
says it works within the law.

Sir
Chris said he hopes the claims about his own tax affairs did not affect
'the British support I know I will need to perform at my best in
London'.

He will carry the Olympic torch into Manchester city centre after it travels from the Lancastrian coast on day 36 of the relay.

Ayre is unhappy over comments made by Whelan during Liverpool’s search for a new manager – which included an approach for Wigan boss Roberto Martinez – and accused the 75-year-old millionaire of creating ‘a sideshow’ before Brendan Rodgers was given the job last week.

Whelan was at pains to avoid an unseemly public row with Liverpool but could not resist a dig at Ayre who caused controversy in October when he said that the Premier League’s top clubs should be allowed to negotiate their own foreign TV contracts at the end of the current 1.4billion deal which is shared between all 20 top-flight teams.

The proposals upset clubs like Wigan
and Whelan issued a sarcastic response to Ayre’s latest comments last
night, saying: ‘Isn’t he the lad who suggested that the top six should
keep the money from the Premier League deal and the rest of us should
have nothing

‘He’s clearly a knowledgeable person on football and I wish him good luck with his new manager.

‘It’s not worth getting involved in.
That’s football. Liverpool are happy and I’m delighted we’ve kept
Roberto. Brendan Rodgers is a great appointment and I wish them all the
best.’

Whelan annoyed Liverpool with a series
of interviews in which he claimed that Martinez had been offered the
job at Anfield after he gave them permission to speak with his Spanish
manager.

Ayre dismissed that as ‘patently not
true’ yesterday having insisted following Rodgers’ appointment that he
was the number one choice.

He said: ‘It’s disappointing that Dave
Whelan felt the need to run the kind of sideshow he conducted via Sky
Sports News and various other media outlets.

‘To be honest, I always thought John
Bishop was the biggest comedian in the north west but Dave Whelan seems
to have taken that mantle over the last couple of weeks.

‘We make no secret of the fact we spoke with Roberto Martinez, but that is all we did.

‘He’s a great guy and I can't speak highly enough of his professionalism and conduct.

‘But for his chairman to make suggestions that just aren’t true is disappointing to say the least.

‘We can say with absolute certainty that the only person who was made any offer by Liverpool Football Club is Brendan Rodgers.’

However, Whelan maintains that
Martinez was at the forefront of Liverpool’s thoughts after the Wigan
manager met with American owner John Henry in Miami.

He believes Martinez was put off by the fact that he would not have had complete control over football affairs at Anfield.

‘They interviewed him first,’ added
Whelan. ‘They asked my permission to speak to Roberto and I gave it. It
seems very strange to interview someone and then dismiss him.’
