Extra security will be laid on for Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton ahead of this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix.

Button's car was ambushed by armed men two years ago and McLaren will not take any risks this time around.

Violence has broken out in Sao Paulo where local reports claim 250 people have been killed since the start of October. Eight buses were also torched last weekend.

Button and Hamilton will be accompanied by a police escort and armoured vehicles on the 45-minute trip from the Interlagos track to their hotel.

Button described the situation in 2010 as 'scary' after the British driver, accompanied by his father John, manager Richard Goodard and trainer Mike Collier saw three men brandishing machine guns approach their car just minutes before arriving at the track.

The McLaren star lauded the quick-thinking of his driver after escaping the scene without further incident.

Button however, has been undeterred by the potential hijacking. He said: 'I love racing here and the fans are very passionate. It is a good race. It has been around for a long time and the people here love their motorsport.'

The 32-year-old added: 'We are having armoured vehicles and a police escort.'

South Africa captain Graeme Smith is to take over as Surrey skipper next season after it was announced the batsman had signed a three-year deal at The Oval.

Smith – widely regarded as one of the best opening batsmen in world cricket for the last decade – will continue in his role with the Proteas alongside his county commitments.

The 31-year-old will captain England batsman and old foe Kevin Pietersen once he joins up with Chris Adams' side after the home Test series against Pakistan in March.

'I am excited to be joining such a professional and talented team, during what will hopefully prove to be a rewarding and successful period for Surrey CCC,' Smith told Surrey's official website.

'When you consider the ambition shown it was an easy decision for myself and my family and I would like to thank Surrey County Cricket Club and Cricket South Africa for giving me the opportunity to lead the side and make it possible.

'I am excited about what we can achieve at Surrey going forward and would like to state very clearly that I will balance my new role alongside my continuing commitments to the Proteas and I look forward to continuing to represent my country for many years to come.'

Smith captained the Proteas to victory over England last summer in a series that was marred by the Pietersen text controversy.

ECB chief executive David Collier was forced into apologising to Smith and his side after accusing South Africa of adding flames to the fire started by Pietersen's 'provocative' comments aimed at ex-England captain Andrew Strauss.

The victory saw South Africa take over the world No 1 mantle and resulted in the resignation of Strauss, who followed predecessors Michael Vaughan and Nasser Hussain in stepping down after losing to Smith's sides.

In 104 Tests since making his debut in 2003 Smith has scored 8,314 runs at an average of 49.78 including 25 centuries, placing him fourteenth on the all-time list of Test century makers.

Smith is likely to miss a chunk of next season when South Africa embark on a three-match tour of Sri Lanka in July and August.

Team Director Adams added: Signing Graeme Smith on a three year deal is a massive coup for Surrey CCC. As well as being one of the best captains in the modern game, he is a phenomenal opening batsman and will lead by example from the top of the innings.'

Smith follows Rory Hamilton-Brown as Surrey captain. The 24-year-old departed for Sussex at the end of a turbulent season during which the club were rocked by the tragic death of young batsman Tom Maynard.

England's planned one-day international against Scotland in Edinburgh next month has been cancelled because of flooding at the Citylets Grange ground.

Cricket Scotland made the announcement, with regret this morning, that the Grange is so badly affected by flooding – following the welter of rain this summer – that they could not guarantee the venue would be ready to stage the match on August 12.

A third of the playing area is under water, five feet deep in places, and 40 metres of the main wall around the ground have been destroyed by the flooding.

The hosts and the England and Wales Cricket Board explored options to move the fixture, but concluded that would not be possible either.

Cricket Scotland chief executive Roddy Smith said: 'This is a hugely frustrating decision that we have had to make, but we could not justifiably take the risk of building the facility on a ground so saturated from more than six weeks of rain.

'We have been faced with an unprecedented and sustained period of rain that has, unfortunately, taken the season's biggest game from us.

'All ticket-holders will be refunded in full by our ticketing partner, Ticket Soup, and we will be contacting everyone who has purchased a ticket with free offers to attend matches next season.

'Everyone is very disappointed but understands the exceptional circumstances we are faced with.'

ECB chief executive David Collier added: “We share Cricket Scotland's disappointment that the flooding has forced the ODI to be cancelled this year.

'Cricket Scotland has made great progress in recent years, and the ODIs between Scotland and England provide a wonderful opportunity to promote the game and to bring new supporters to cricket.

'We look forward to returning to Scotland in future years and wish our friends at Cricket Scotland every success in the future.'

Tom Maynard funeral attended by cricket stars

Andrew Strauss and Andrew Flintoff were among the great and the good of cricket who paid their respects as Tom Maynard was laid to rest in his home city of Cardiff.

The 23-year-old Surrey batsman died on June 18 after being hit by a London Underground train, and a congregation of around 900 attended his funeral at Llandaff Cathedral.

Alongside Maynard's father Matthew, mother Sue and sister Ceri were figures from the sporting world including England captain Strauss and former internationals Flintoff, Paul Collingwood, Mike Gatting and Alec Stewart.

Wales rugby great Gareth Edwards was also in attendance, as was England international Danny Cipriani, while Maynard's Surrey team-mates, with Kevin Pietersen among them, and former Glamorgan colleagues also paid their respects.

Strauss said: 'I first saw Tom when he was a teenager when Matthew was batting coach of England. He had grown up so well since then and was forging a name for himself in the game of cricket.

'I suppose that's part of what makes it so tragic he is no longer with us. I obviously feel so much for Matthew, Sue and the family to have to go through this.

'But I think today is as much about celebrating Tom and what he achieved as it is saying goodbye. It's obviously a very tough day for everyone who knew him, no more so than for members of his family.'

The England and Wales Cricket Board were represented by managing director Hugh Morris and chief executive David Collier, with former Glamorgan captain Morris delivering a glowing eulogy to a player who was tipped to represent his country in the near future.

Morris said: 'The presence of so many members of the cricket community tells me Tom was not only a player blessed with extraordinary talent, but somebody whose sense of fun and enjoyment made him a hugely popular figure within our game.

'No-one will feel a greater sense of loss today than Matt, Sue, Ceri and family, and I know that many of you within the wider cricketing family will feel you have lost a treasured friend and team-mate; someone who enlivened the dressing room or lit-up any social occasion with warmth and good humour.

'What saddens me so much is that we have not only lost a hugely popular and colourful character, but one of our most exciting and explosive young batsmen. A player who could make the game look deceptively easy, a player who was surely destined for the highest reaches of the game, and a player, whose authority and elegance at the crease reminded so many of his father.'

Glamorgan captain Mark Wallace also delivered a eulogy while former X-Factor contestant Lucie Jones, who like Maynard hails from the village of Pentyrch, sang two songs during the service.

Maynard had long been regarded as one of English cricket's bright young talents, having scored 71 runs from 75 balls when making his Glamorgan debut at the age of just 17.

He moved to Surrey in 2011 and toured Bangladesh with the England Lions last winter. His Surrey and Glamorgan team-mates have been hit hard by his death, and Maynard's flatmate and Surrey captain Rory Hamilton-Brown, who was a pallbearer at the funeral, is to take an indefinite break from the game.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned at Westminster Coroner's Court – with Dr Shirley Radcliffe saying 'extensive investigations' were continuing.

World Snooker Championship 2012: Mark Allen in cheat claim

You cheat! Allen accuses Chinese opponent of 'blatant foul' after shock defeat

UPDATED:

20:16 GMT, 22 April 2012

After the perfection of Stephen Hendry’s 147 maximum break on Saturday, the BetFred.com World Snooker Championship descended into accusations of cheating made by Mark Allen against his young Chinese opponent Cao Yupeng on Sunday.

The Northern Irishman’s season has been shrouded in controversial outbursts, but moments after he had surprisingly lost his first-round match 10-7 to a player ranked 81 in the world, Allen made the most damning of allegations.

Trailing 5-4 overnight, the world No 11 watched on as Cao appeared to strike the white ball twice with his cue while potting a red. Referee Paul Collier did not call a foul and Cao played on to compile a break of 33 on his way to winning the frame.

Allen believed Cao should have called a foul against himself and reacted furiously immediately after the match.

He said: ‘The referee missed a blatant push. It was obvious to me and anyone watching at home would have been able to see it, no problem.

‘Cao looked at the referee as soon as he did it, as if to say, “Are you not calling a foul here” It seems to be a bit of a trait for the Chinese players because there have been a few instances in the past of fouls and blatant cheating going on. It needs to be corrected. He’s a good enough player that he doesn’t have to do that.

‘It’s very, very sad for the state of snooker if it has to be down to that.’

A World Snooker spokesman confirmed Allen’s allegations would be investigated.

Allen’s coach Terry Griffiths, who was commentating on the game live on the BBC, immediately spotted the foul, turning to co-commentator John Virgo even before the white ball had come to a stop. He said: ‘I think he fouled that. I think he hit the white twice, didn’t he, John’

Allen’s outburst was the latest in a six-month barrage of insults which have landed him with fines and trouble. He swore while accusing snooker supremo Barry Hearn of caring only about money, not the players, at the UK Championship in December.

He has yet to be sanctioned for disparaging remarks made about the Chinese city of Hainan, tweeting ‘dead cats’ and that ‘the place stinks’.

Cao was hurt by the accusations. He said through an interpreter: ‘I didn’t realise I had fouled. If I did foul, then I say sorry. If I didn’t and Mark has said that (I should) apologise, then I would feel very upset and angry.’

Allen’s anger was compounded by the manner of defeat. At 9-6 behind, he made what he thought was a winning clearance only to see the white ball drop into a corner pocket and hand Cao victory.

Meanwhile, Hendry duly completed a comfortable 10-4 victory over Stuart Bingham, the same scoreline by which Neil Robertson overcame Ken Doherty. Hendry's reward is a first-ever Crucible meeting with fellow Scottish multiple-world champion John Higgins.
