Feyenoord may have cut the lead at the top of the Dutch Eredivisie to three points after a 2-1 win over league leaders PSV Eindhoven – but the main talking point came off the pitch.

PSV goalscorer Jeremain Lens waited for Feyenoord defender Joris Mathijsen in the tunnel – and a brawl occurred.

The two players had been involved in a row on the pitch and Lens was keen to continue the row after the game.

The incident, which was caught on video, shows Lens waiting for Mathijsen in the communal area and squaring up to him when he appeared.

Lens grabbed a chunk of Mathijsen’s shirt, players from PSV and Feyenoord both piled into the mix to separate the warring pair.

That, in turn, sparked a physical melee between the sides whilst the officials were in close proximity.

Earlier, on the pitch, Feyenoord had came from a goal down to win the game and cut the gap at the top of the league.

The Feyenoord fightback put the Rotterdam club in third place on 47 points, just three points behind PSV.

Second-place Ajax wasted a chance to draw level on points with PSV when it had to rely on a late goal by Lasse Schoene to salvage a 1-1 draw with ADO The Hague.

In-form forward Lens gave PSV the lead in the 34th minute, finishing off a one-two with Tim Matavz after Feyenoord midfielder Jordie Clasie had needlessly given the ball away.

Clasie made amends early in the second half when his pass freed winger Ruben Schaken to draw Feyenoord level. Graziano Pelle sealed all three points for Feyenoord with a 68th-minute strike.

‘We were behind at the break, but didn't deserve to be,’ Feyenoord coach Ronald Koeman said. ‘We lacked conviction in the first half, particularly in attack. We managed to put that right in the second half. We were better, more aggressive, won more tackles, were more threatening and in the end we deserved to win.’

Tiger Woods remained on course for victory as the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines went into a fifth day.

After fog remarkably wiped out all but five minutes of day three's play, the third round and a large chunk of the fourth was completed today before darkness fell.

When that moment came, Woods was 17 under par with 11 holes to play, six shots clear of nearest challengers Brandt Snedeker and Nick Watney.

Woods was two shots clear at the start of play and extended his lead with a three-under-par third round of 69, bettered only by Australian Aaron Baddeley with 68.

The world number two began his final round four clear, having won on 39 of the 41 previous occasions he has led outright with 18 holes remaining – though the quick turnaround meant he had not changed into his trademark red shirt.

Nor did he start in typical fashion. He sent his first tee shot way left and needed a good recovery shot to set up a par, and then hit his second tee shot on to the fringe of the sixth fairway and was fortunate to have a clear shot in, though even then he needed an excellent 10-yard pitch to save par.
But he birdied the next two and gained another shot at the sixth before finishing with a par at the seventh.

Reigning champion Snedeker had spoken during Saturday's inactivity of the need to score low in today's extended play, and he certainly did so.

After also shooting 69 in the third round, Snedeker began his fourth with four birdies on the front nine and ended the day on 11 under par with five holes to play in the tournament.

Watney, the 2009 champion, could only manage 71 in his third round but was three under through eight to move in to contention on 11 under.

Canada's Brad Fritsch was nine under through seven but Woods' playing partner Casey Wittenberg dropped back from that mark after bogeying the seventh, failing to get up and down from a ridiculous position near the second tee.

Luke Guthrie, Josh Teater, Steve Marino and Erik Compton were also at eight under, with six players including Englishman Ross Fisher tied on seven under.

On the sidelines: Darren Bent hasn't played in the Premier League for Villa since late October

Darren Bent’s continued absence from the Aston Villa side has been cast in a different light after it was revealed the club will have to pay another big chunk of his 24million transfer fee to Sunderland if he plays three more matches.

Bent has been out of the first team for the past month, with manager Paul Lambert claiming the striker had problems with his ankle. But it appears he has been fit to play for the past three weeks.

Intriguingly, Sunderland will receive another seven-figure instalment if Bent reaches 50 games for the club. He has played 47, and the stand-off points to a sale in January.

Villa originally paid Sunderland 18m for the player and an additional 3m after they secured Premier League survival, when Bent chalked up 25 appearances in a claret and blue shirt.

A Villa spokesman denied he is being left out for financial reasons, while Lambert brushed aside any suggestion of a rift after Tuesday night’s 1-0 victory over Reading.

Lambert said: ‘There isn’t a problem. You can’t please people all the time.’

Bent’s former team-mate at Ipswich and Charlton, Matt Holland, said: ‘Sunderland may be due another chunk of money on him reaching 50 appearances, so it may be difficult to play him.’

Arsenal can spend more money after Emirates Deal – Ivan Gazidis

Our new Emirates deal means we can splash the cash, claims Arsenal chief Gazidis

UPDATED:

22:47 GMT, 23 November 2012

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has promised fans the club’s new 150million sponsorship deal with Emirates would directly boost Arsene Wenger’s spending power in the transfer market – but that effects would not be felt until next summer.

Gazidis said the increased revenue from the five-year shirt deal would come too late for the January window but emphasised that a large chunk, understood to be in excess of 30m, would be paid upfront and made available to the Gunners boss from July.

Theo Walcott has yet to agree a new contract and Gazidis, without naming the player specifically, stated pay packages for key squad members would also benefit. ‘We can pay bigger salaries and we can invest more in transfer fees,’ he said.

The Dubai-based airline will have its brand on the Arsenal kit until the end of the 2018-19 season, while the club’s 60,000-seater home ground will remain Emirates Stadium up to 2028.

The previous deal saw Arsenal earn 100m over ten years.

Gazidis conceded ‘nobody is satisfied’ with the position the team finds itself in and said only there are ‘no guarantees’ in football when asked if Arsenal would now stop selling their best players.

But he added: ‘What we can do is develop a really solid financial platform for the club that gives us the ability to compete for top players – both top players that we bring in and top players that we want to keep.

‘We’ve got good confidence that we can compete for the best talent. We can pay bigger salaries and we can invest more in transfer fees.

'How we make those decisions will be based on a manager whose judgements over the years has been shown to be outstanding.

‘There’s nobody I would want to be thinking about those types of decisions more than Arsene Wenger on behalf of this football club.

'We want to be able to invest in the team a little bit more now so we’ll have that capability by the summer.’

Arsenal already have 40m in the bank and
Gazidis added: ‘We also kept some powder dry so we’ve got the ability
to invest if our manager finds the right opportunities in January.’

Supporters hoping the cost of tickets
would be reduced by the extra income may be disappointed however. ‘I
didn’t say they would come down,’ Gazidis said.

‘I think we’ve been very
responsible on ticket pricing. Since we’ve moved to the new stadium
we’ve had two increases in ticket season prices.’

Adel Taarabt wants QPR stay amid Arsenal interest

Taarabt wants QPR stay, insists Hughes as Arsenal ponder raid

UPDATED:

16:39 GMT, 9 November 2012

Mark Hughes is confident Adel Taarabt will stay at QPR in January after admitting the Moroccan will be key to the club's chances of staying in the Barclays Premier League.

Taarabt has been one this season's rare successes at the west London club, who are looking to win their first game of the season at the 11th attempt when they visit Stoke on Saturday.

After joining the Rs permanently in 2010 Taarabt was a huge success, scoring 19 goals and providing countless assists to help the club earn promotion to the Premier League.

Wanted: But QPR manager Hughes believes Taarabt will stay at Loftus Road

He found life hard in the top flight last season, though, with rumours of indiscipline off the pitch and poor form on it leading many to claim the 23-year-old was unable to cut it at the highest level.

Hughes seems to have got the best out of the former Tottenham man since, however. His form has led to suggestions Arsenal may move for the player, but Hughes insists Taarabt is happy at Rangers.

'It wouldn't surprise me if clubs were looking at him but I know for a fact that he is very happy here and he sees his future here,' Hughes said.

'This is the best place for him because we support him, we give him the best chance to be successful, and he understands that.'

Taarabt has missed a large chunk of QPR's season thanks to a hamstring injury, but he is now fully fit and has impressed Hughes since he returned to the Rangers starting XI almost three weeks ago.

Indeed Taarabt's form has been so good that Hughes rates him up there with some of the best players he has worked with.

Given that the Welshman has played in teams containing Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Roy Keane, and has managed stars like Carlos Tevez at Manchester City, such a compliment should not be taken lightly.

'He's an outstanding player,' Hughes said. 'In terms of ability alone he is arguably one of the best players I have played or worked with.

'Obviously that is not the whole package. There are still parts of his game that he has to work on and he understands that.

'He is working exceptionally hard for there team, which in the past has been a criticism of him. That's not the case now.

'He is in a really good place now in terms of his attitude to his work and what he is able to produce on the pitch.

'We are really pleased with what he is showing on the pitch.'

While Hughes was keen to talk about Taarabt's commitment to QPR, his own future was also up for debate as he faced the media at the club's training ground.

Hughes brought in 11 first-team players this summer – from such clubs as Inter Milan and Real Madrid – but he has failed to deliver Tony Fernandes a single win so far this term.

The QPR owner once again reaffirmed his support for Hughes this week, and the 49-year-old has no doubt he is the right man to drag the Londoners away from the relegation zone.

'If we were playing particularly poorly and not getting results then you would start to look at the situation and think maybe it's not possible to turn it around, but that's not the case,' Hughes said.

'You look at our last three games and I think we have played fine in those games without getting the points we think we deserved.

;We are doing okay. There are elements of our play that need to improve because we haven't been able to see games out, but we are all convinced that will change fairly soon.'

Hughes hopes to tie up the emerging Swedish star on a loan deal in January to replace the one time England striker.

Guidetti, 20, spent last season on loan

including three hat-tricks in four matches.

Johnson looks set to miss most of the season after suffering cruciate ligament damage against Chelsea on Saturday.

The 31-year-old, making only his second
start for the club, was replaced by Jamie Mackie during the first half
of the goalless draw and Rangers confirmed on Monday that he will be out
for a 'prolonged' period because of the injury to his left knee.

The former Everton striker has fought frequent battles against injuries and missed a large chunk of the 2009-10 campaign for Fulham with a severe knee injury.

Johnson, who has won eight caps for England, joined Rangers on a two-year contract in the summer after his Fulham deal expired.

Hughes was initially hopeful Johnson would make a speedy return.

'AJ felt something in his knee. We hope he's going to be okay, but it's a little bit of worry,' Hughes said after the game.

'You need players like AJ in the squad
because they give so much. We'll send him for a scan over the next few
days and hopefully he'll be okay.'

Manchester City's disappointing summer shopping has taken another sorry twist with Swansea ready to pull the plug on Scott Sinclair's switch to the Etihad.

The winger was expected to complete a 6million switch comfortably ahead of Friday's deadline. However the deal has hit a snag, according to WalesOnline, with Chelsea, the Olympian's former club, due to chunk of the fee.

On Monday, Swans chairman Huw Jenkins hit out at the Premier League champions over their approach: 'I would have thought if they really wanted to sign Scott Sinclair they would have dealt with it a little bit better than they have. But that’s their business.

'It has dragged on too long and I hope one way or another it will be concluded the next couple of days.'

The 23-year-old, who moved to Wales in a 1.5m move from Stamford Bridge in August 2010, didn't feature in Swansea's 3-0 win over West Ham on Saturday, despite scoring the previous week away at QPR.

Sinclair is in the final year of his deal at the Liberty Stadium and told the club earlier this summer he would not extend his stay.

On who might be coming to Swansea, Jenkins added: 'I think it’s more about numbers and making sure we have the right number in the squad.'

On his way Carroll has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield

Liverpool have told Newcastle that they will have to stump up 17million in cash if they want to bring Andy Carroll back to Tyneside this summer.

New Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is prepared to offload the England striker, but only club can recuperate a sizeable chunk of the 35m they paid for him in January 2011.

Newcastle Chronicle sources are told that Liverpool are not prepared to let Carroll leave on loan, but they are prepared to take a loss on the 23-year-old to offload him.

Rodgers has brought in Fabio Borini from Roma to compete with Luis Suarez for a starting place, and with the Northern Irishman likely to play with just one up front, Carroll's first-team opportunities will be limited.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is keen to bolster his squad as the Magpies prepare to compete in the Europa League, but it is unknown whether the club would be willing to pay the 17m for Carroll when they already have Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba on their books.

West Ham were prepared to break the bank to bring Carroll to Upton Park, but the Geordie turned down a move to London.

Emmanuel Adebayor has been told by Manchester City that he will not be given a pay off by Manchester City to leave the club and finally seal a move to Tottenham.

The striker is currently in negotiations over a move to White Hart Lane after the two clubs agreed a 5m move.

But the striker is still in talks with Spurs after his refusal to accept a cut to his current 175,000-a-week wages, which were part subsidised by City last season.

Adebayor is willing to accept Spurs’ 100,000-a-week offer, but only if City make up the loss by handing a chunk of the transfer fee directly to him.

But City are not keen on that idea and boss Roberto Mancini has told Adebayor he can forget about picking up a hefty pay off, and the club will force him to play in the reserves if he fails to find an agreement with Spurs.

The Togo international is set to hold further talks with Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas in the hope a deal that suits all parties can be agreed.
