Manchester City are closing in on in-demand Napoli frontman Edinson Cavani after agreeing in principle terms with the player over a summer move.

However, David Beckham's Paris St Germain remain in the hunt after striking up a similar deal despite neither agreeing a fee with the Uruguayan's club.

To make matters worse for City, the player himself has set his sights on a dream move to Real Madrid.

Edinson Cavani has scored 72 goals and delivered 12 assists in 100 appearances for Napoli in Serie A.

With fears mounting that Zlatan Ibrahimovic could be lured back to Juventus, as revealed in Sportsmail, PSG hope to hijack City’s pursuit of one of Europe’s most accomplished finishers.

Roberto Mancini is desperate to hit the ground running this summer after seeing his title chances damaged considerably last year when Robin van Persie chose Manchester United.

City, then, have agreed in principle to offer 256k per week, though there remains the barrier of his release clause, initially thought to be 53million. Recently, though, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis insisted it would take an incredible 60million to trigger it.

Asked to clarify the exact amount
needed to prise the 26-year-old away, the president said: ‘We included a
very high buy-out clause in his contract, because we want him to stay.

'The clause does exist, though, and if some nutter is willing to pay €70m for him we are ready to listen.'

Cavani is the top scorer in Serie A this season, with 23 goals, firing Napoli to a likely second-placed finish behind Juventus.

Manchester City want to significantly slash their wage bill this summer with a ruthless clear-out.

The current Barclays Premier League holders have already begun the process of making their salary expenditure more cost-effective from next season by instructing a number of third-parties to find buyers for a host of players this summer.

Newly-appointed director of football Txiki Begiristain and chief executive Ferran Soriano have made it a top priority to streamline the club’s wage bill.

Players City are committed to offloading this summer are Maicon, Joleon Lescott, Edin Dzeko and Scott Sinclair.

The futures of Gareth Barry, Javi Garcia, Aleksandar Kolarov and Samir Nasri are also under review ahead of the summer shake-up.

Furthermore, City will make an instant 15million annual saving once Roque Santa Cruz, Wayne Bridge and Kolo Toure’s contracts expire at the end of the season.

The Etihad Stadium club will also look to use their unwanted stars as makeweights in their attempts to sign fresh blood.

The imminent clear-out is, in part, to ensure the club fall into UEFA’s financial fair play guidelines, but also designed to give the club more leeway in terms of wages in the transfer market this summer.

City will look to make at least two significant purchases, with Napoli forward Edinson Cavani, who has a 52million release clause, already identified.

Manager Roberto Mancini will also look to add a box-to-box central midfielder to his ranks, with Everton’s Marouane Fellaini viewed as a leading candidate.

It is understood the Toffees are aware of City’s growing interest in the Belgium international, but are unwilling to make a decision on his future until the end of the season.

City would be willing to stretch to 23million to land Fellaini, who is also a long-term target for Chelsea, in the summer and have already earmarked young striker John Guidetti as a sweetener in the deal. Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama is also a target for City.

Manchester City are ready to begin a 60million-plus overhaul of their squad with summer moves for Napoli’s Edinson Cavani and Celtic’s Victor Wanyama.

Manager Roberto Mancini and football director Txiki Begiristain have recognised the need to freshen up the under-performing Barclays Premier League champions and will offload at least four players to help satisfy the demands of UEFA’s financial fair play guidelines.

City opened talks over a move for Napoli’s prolific forward Cavani last month and were initially put off by his 52m release clause.

However, with Chelsea in pole position for Atletico Madrid’s Colombian superstar Radamel Falcao, City have returned to the Uruguay international and are prepared to break the British transfer record to sign him.

Cavani is currently Serie A’s leading scorer with 18 goals, helping his club to second place, five points behind leaders and the defending champions Juventus.

Both Napoli and Cavani’s representatives are aware of City’s intention to pursue the 25-year-old during the summer transfer window. But Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are also poised to bid.

Mancini missed out on signing Robin van Persie from Arsenal last summer and has bemoaned the fact ever since.

City have fallen 12 points behind neighbours Manchester United in the Barclays Premier League title race.

And the club’s hierarchy are determined not to miss out on another top target.
City will help offset their outlay by selling 25m-rated striker Edin Dzeko in the summer.

The 26-year-old Bosnia forward is wanted in Italy and Germany and is keen to kickstart his career after playing a supporting role this season.

He will be followed by other big-name sacrifices as City also look to bring in a new centre back and defensive midfielder.

Meanwhile, Celtic powerhouse Wanyama was watched by City scouts on Tuesday night against Juventus and they were joined in the crowd by representatives from Chelsea and Arsenal.

The Kenyan, who impressed despite playing the second half with an injured ankle, has also been watched by Manchester United.

He is valued at 10m, however the 21-year-old has only 16 months left on his contract and will be eager to join City’s all-star squad.

The former Charlton midfielder didn’t reveal if his bargain hunt was successful but we are not ruling out the 20-year-old opting to pick-up the tried and tested ‘Henry’ over a technology laced Dyson.

Liverpool fans will forgive Shelvey for his austerity measures after making strong progress at the club since arriving from the Valley in 2010 for 1.7m.

Shelvey has made 18 appearances in all competitions this term, with only Edinson Cavani and Raul Bopadilla netting more than his four Europa League goals.

The midfielder also made his international debut last month, coming off the bench for England in a 5-0 win over San Marino.

Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool are considering a January move for Shakhtar Donetsk’s Brazilian striker Luiz Adriano.

Scouts from each of the clubs have been monitoring the 25-year-old for over a year and watched him during Shakhtar’s narrow 3-2 Champions League defeat by Chelsea last week.

Spurs, Manchester City and Chelsea have all shown interest in Shakhtar’s dynamic duo, Willian and Fernandinho, but a deal for Adriano could be less complex to negotiate.

The speedy striker has scored 45 goals in 107 games for the Russian club and his valuation represents decent value in an escalating market. Arsenal are also weighing up Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko and Napoli’s Edinson Cavani but they would both cost considerably more in both transfer fees and wages.

Arsenal were offered Adriano in the summer and were keen but opted for Olivier Giroud instead. They need to off-load Marouane Chamakh in January to help free up wages but are also wary of losing Theo Walcott, with Liverpool interested.

Arsenal’s main rivals for Adriano are Tottenham, who are keen to sign him and then revive interest in Willian. Boss Andre Villas-Boas is eager to strengthen his attacking options in January.Liverpool may find Adriano too expensive for this window.

None of the Shakhtar Brazilians automatically qualify for a work permit but Adriano’s representatives believe they can put together a strong enough case to convince the appeals panel.

Arsenal have also scouted Burnley’s Kieran Trippier, 22, as they look to strengthen their right back options with Bacary Sagna expected to leave.

Manchester City could sell striker Mario Balotelli in January as manager Roberto Mancini has been told he must raise funds before buying players.

Mancini was told at his first meeting with new sporting director Txiki Begiristain last week that it will be a quiet January transfer window for the club unless he can raise funds first by selling players.

Inter Milan and AC Milan are both interested in taking Balotelli, 22, who is valued at 22 million by City.

City may delay buying until the summer, when they have a better chance of landing A-list targets Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Daniele de Rossi.

Mancini will be hoping Balotelli's form picks up in the next few weeks but he doubts the striker can fulfil his potential at the Etihad Stadium.

Balotelli is not even guaranteed a place against Tottenham on Sunday, which he hoped would be his 50th game for City.

The Italian has been Mancini's fourth choice behind Argentinians Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez and top goalscorer Edin Dzeko.

The former Inter Milan striker has been courted by cross-city rivals AC Milan just last week.

Balotelli left Inter under a cloud and AC Milan's chief executive Adriano Galliani expressed his 'love' for the controversial forward.

Edinson Cavani will demand parity with Chelsea’s top earners when he reopens talks with the European champions this week.

The Uruguay striker’s representatives will tell the London club he wants a pay deal worth 150,000 a week, which would put him on a par with John Terry, Frank Lampard and Fernando Torres.

Luis Suarez will miss part of pre-season with Liverpool after being named in Uruguay's Olympic squad.

The striker's Liverpool team-mate Sebastian Coates has also been included in a strong 18-man squad which also includes Napoli striker Edinson Cavani.

Suarez, Cavani and Palermo midfielder Arevalo Rios are the three players permitted over the age of 23.

Chelsea are edging closer to a deal for Fiorentina and Montenegro striker Stevan Jovetic.

The Viola were not impressed with a 20million offer from the Blues but Italian newspaper La Gazetta dello Sport believes 25m is enough to secure the forward.

Jovetic reportedly has a buy-out clause in his contract to that value which the bid would trigger.

Juventus and Napoli are also interested in the star but he might want to move away from Serie A and try pastures new.

The Blues are determined to sign a new striker to fill the gap left by Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou.

New 13m Arsenal signing Giroud recently revealed he rejected a move to the European Champions.

Chelsea are also interested in Edinson Cavani but have been warned by Napoli that the striker is not for sale at any price.

The interest in a new big-name forward suggests they do not have faith in Fernando Torres to lead the line with Romelu Lukaku and Daniel Sturridge as back-up.
