John Terry injury latest: Scan reveals no ligament damage

Chelsea relief as Terry scan reveals NO ligament damage but captain is still out for at least two weeks

John Terry has told friends of his relief after a scan confirmed no serious damage to the knee he injured against Liverpool on Sunday.

Terry initially feared he had suffered a season-ending injury when his right leg was trapped and twisted in a collision with Luis Suarez during the 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

But the Chelsea captain hopes he could be fit in time to lead Chelsea into their first FIFA Club World Cup next month.

An MRI scan showed there is no great
damage apart from inflammation caused by the impact, which
hyper-extended the joint, flexing it the wrong way.

But doctors told the 31- year-old he
had been lucky his studs were not planted in the turf when the collision
occurred or he would almost certainly have snapped the ligaments in his
knee.

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech feared
the worst when he saw the collision but said yesterday: 'He was unlucky
to get injured but lucky. When somebody of 60 or 70 kilos lands on your
leg, it can be very damaging. Normally with JT, you see his face and
know he will be alright, but you saw straight away it was impossible for
him to continue.'

Terry's right knee caused him
problems earlier this year, when he needed surgery to clean out
cartilage debris and was out for six weeks. Chelsea's Club World Cup campaign gets under way in Japan on December 13.

Sportsmail has
learned that the club will not know for certain until the swelling on
his right leg has calmed down, but both the player and Chelsea officials
are hugely relieved at the news.

A club statement read: 'Today's MRI
scans on John Terry's right knee thankfully show no significant damage
to the cruciate ligaments.

'Chelsea Football Club's medical team
will conduct further tests over the next two or three days once the
swelling has subsided to determine how long John will be out, but it
will be a matter of weeks not months.'

Micah Richards will discover the extent of the damage to his right knee, which he injured during Saturday’s win over Swansea.

The Manchester City defender had a scan at a Manchester hospital on Sunday amid fears that he had sustained ligament damage and was facing a long lay-off.

The results are not due to until Monday lunchtime, so Richards faces an anxious wait to see if his season is over.

But City’s medical staff are optimistic that the England international has suffered only cartilage damage and will probably be out for only four to six weeks.

It was Richards’s fourth consecutive game since returning from the foot injury that ruined the first two months of his season.

Manchester United winger Ashley Young has been ruled out for two to three weeks with a 'bruised cartilage', Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed.

The 27-year-old missed out on the England squad for the World Cup 2014 qualifying double-header against Moldova and Ukraine earlier this month, and Ferguson now expects to be without the player until October.

Ferguson confirmed the problem at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday's game against Liverpool.

The United boss also said midfielder Darren Fletcher would play from the start in Wednesday night's Capital One Cup tie at home to Newcastle.

The Scotland international came on as a substitute in the 1-0 Champions League win over Galatasaray in midweek, his first competitive outing since last November. The player has an inflammatory bowel condition.

Ferguson later confirmed Young's cartilage problem was a knee injury.

Ryan Taylor injury news: Alan Pardew says signs promising

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is hoping Ryan Taylor will return from his cruciate ligament injury quicker than most after a promising early prognosis.

The 28-year-old utility man collapsed in agony early on in Thursday night's 1-0 Europa League victory over Atromitos and underwent a scan the following day.

That confirmed the ligament damage and condemned the player to a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

But Pardew said: 'He has done a cruciate, but the good news of that particular injury is that usually when you do it, you do some ligaments or you do a cartilage and it really is problematic.

'But Ryan looks quite straightforward. There's not a lot of swelling, the cruciate has detached, so it's purely a case of putting it back and I think he will come back a little bit quicker than most cruciate injuries.'

Taylor's team-mates ran out for the Barclays Premier League clash with Aston Villa wearing tracksuits emblazoned with the message 'Ryan Taylor over the wall', a reference to the song the Toon Army sing about his derby-winning free-kick at Sunderland last season.

Pardew said: 'It was Colo's [skipper Fabricio Coloccini] idea, he called me yesterday. We didn't want to say “Get well” because there are people in a lot worse positions than Ryan as a professional footballer.

'It's just nice to have that sort of spirit within the group, and it was just something to say: “We support you Ryan, good luck and come back quickly”.'

Taylor is one of three Newcastle full-backs to have picked up injuries during the last few days with Danny Simpson joining he and James Perch on the sidelines after damaging a hamstring against Villa.

Indeed, midfielder Vurnon Anita had to play the final 52 minutes of the game at the back as the club's decision not to recruit another defender during the transfer window came back to haunt them.

Pardew said: 'I had no chance, really. We lose Ryan one day before and your opportunity is very, very slim to get a player good enough for us.

'We have got great replacements, although we couldn't have foreseen that Danny was going to get injured today.

'But Anita went back in there and actually probably saved us a point with two great headers on the far post, and his quality going forward helped us.

'I don't think we have got a massive problem there.'

LONDON OLYMPICS 2012: Paula Radcliffe admits to tears after Olympic heartbreak

Radcliffe admits she's been in tears over Olympic heartbreak as she prepares for surgery

Paula Radcliffe hopes to undergo surgery at the end of this month on the foot joint which forced her to withdraw from the Olympic marathon at the London Games.

Radcliffe revealed she had 'cried more tears than ever' after admitting defeat in her battle against osteoarthritis in her left foot, a degenerative problem which cruelly resurfaced just a few weeks ago.

The 38-year-old had been hoping to claim a first Olympic medal in her fifth Games, having finished fifth in the 5,000m in Atlanta, fourth in the 10,000m in Sydney and suffering despair in the marathon in 2004 and 2008.

Although her Olympic career is now over, Radcliffe insisted she will carry on running, and said: 'The joint's pretty degenerated and it's not going to recover until I get surgery on it. But I am getting surgery on it and then I will be able to run on it again.

'It's going to be a long process, but it will work out. I'm not sure when I'm having the operation, hopefully the end of this month. I need to get a bone graft and a cartilage repair done on it.'

Radcliffe, who is the world record holder for the marathon and was world champion over the distance in Helsinki in 2005, said she has been watching some of the Olympics in the stadium, where good friend Mo Farah won 10,000m gold last weekend.

She added: 'I've seen Mo Farah come through for many years and have supported him through that, and to see him doing so well, I'm really, really proud of him.

'I'm proud of how Britain's doing and how great the Olympics is. It's the best Olympic Games I've been to, even with my disappointment.

'I'm glad I've had the courage to be here, but I'm not over my disappointment at not competing yet.'

How will Spurs cope without Ledley King?

King of the Lane ends his reign as injury-hit defender forced to retire

Ledley King's retirement prompts
questions about what might have been for the former Tottenham defender
but the issue for Spurs now is what happens next.

King announced on Thursday he was
quitting football at the age of 31, after years of battling injuries and
with no cartilage remaining in his left knee.

HAVE YOUR SAY…

Could Ledley King have been the best defender of his generation
King, who has captained Tottenham since 2005 and has suffered from chronic knee problems in recent years, has announced his retirement.

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK

He departs after 323 first-team appearances and 14 goals for Tottenham, the club he joined when he was 14 and with whom he won the Carling Cup in 2008.

He earned 21 England caps, scoring two goals, but the numbers don’t do justice to King’s enormous talent in central defence. His hampered movement and lack of speed began to be exposed in the second half of last season, but you can’t help but wonder what he might have achieved if his body had been as strong as his impeccable reading of the game.

Those silken performances, delivered in
recent years after training only in the gym or pool, once prompted
former manager Harry Redknapp to liken King to a Rolls-Royce. Spurs
chairman Daniel Levy called King ‘one of the most gifted
players in the history of the club’ and Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon
urged the club to retire King’s No 26 shirt. ‘The best defender I’ve
ever played with or against,’ Lennon added on Twitter. ‘He will be
missed greatly. Legend.’

King told Tottenham’s website: ‘I have missed a lot of football over the
years, but the Spurs fans have always been patient and incredibly
supportive with me. Sadly my injuries and inability to train have now
finally brought an end to my career.

‘Tottenham is a second home for me. I have been here since I was a boy, I
have always considered it my club and have always found it hard to
imagine wearing the shirt of another team.

‘I know that being a one-club man is a rarity these days, but I have
always enjoyed being part of the set-up here and the challenge of
putting this club with the elite where it should be.’

King’s loyalty — and the club’s allegiance to a defender who has played
only 44 matches in the past two seasons — means he will continue to
represent Spurs as an ambassador. A testimonial match will also take
place at the end of this season.

Andre Villas-Boas praised King’s ‘tremendous past’ last week. This feels
like the right decision for King, but now the Spurs boss must try to
replace him.

Numbers are not the problem, with William Gallas and Sebastien Bassong
linked with moves away from White Hart Lane, but finding the right
partnership may take time and that is in short supply if Villas-Boas’s
bid to win the title is to be a realistic one.

New signing Jan Vertonghen, 25, will be making his debut in the Premier
League this season, most likely alongside Younes Kaboul or Michael
Dawson. Steven Caulker is another intriguing option.

How Tottenham cope with life after Ledley could be the key to their chances of success this season.

Europe’s Ryder Cup winning star Edoardo Molinari is facing surgery on an injured left wrist.

Molinari revealed his problem after finishing with a share of 11th place in Sunday's Andalucian Open, that he has been carrying the injury for some four years.

However it was not until after returning home from the recent Middle East 'Desert Swing' that the 31-year old Molinari learnt the extent of the injury.

‘The first time I felt pain in my wrist was four years ago when I had tendinitis, but after seeing doctors I've been informed some of the cartilage on top of my wrist has become firm and it needs to be removed,’ the Italian said.

‘I had six weeks off over the winter, but when I went out to the Middle East I knew something was wrong with my wrist as it became very painful.’

After having two cortisone injections on his return from the Middle East, Molinari says he is able to compete without pain killers but had his wrist strapped during his appearance last week in Spain.

'I can wait to around September to have the operation so I will see how it goes through the year,’ he said. ‘Luckily I'm not doing any more damage by playing, but if it does get too painful I will have the operation earlier.'

Joel Moon could be sidelined until April

Tough break for Moon as Salford centre faces spell on sidelines

Salford centre Joel Moon could be sidelined until April after breaking a bone in his hand during his side's 38-10 defeat at St Helens on Friday.

Moon, who missed the chance to play for New Zealand Warriors in last October's Grand Final because of a broken ankle, was making only his second appearance for the City Reds.

'His hand is currently in a cast and he's seeing a specialist today,' said a Salford spokesman.

'We expect he could be out for up to two months.

'It's obviously it's a big blow for us and for Joel so soon after his ankle break.'

Another new signing, utility player Stuart Howarth, sustained a broken nose and a badly-bruised thumb in the same game, while debutant forward Shannon McPherson had stitches in two separate head wounds, although both are expected to face Widnes on Sunday.

he Reds also expect former Wigan props Iafeta Paleaaesina and Jordan James to return from injury against the Vikings but hooker Wayne Godwin remains sidelined with rib cartilage damage.
