It's safe to say that Diego Maradona is having a busy week.

Following the news of his fifth child being born last Thursday, the ex-Argentina World Cup winner was snapped alongside Caroline Wozniacki at the WTA Dubai Tennis Championships.

It looks hard to tell who was more excited, with the pair swapping a signed football shirt and tennis racket courtside.

With her boyfriend Rory McIlroy away in snowy Arizona at the moment, Maradona may have seen his chance to get a photo with the in-demand former World No.1.

He also couldn't keep his hands off American player Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who appeared delighted at the attention.

After a little peck on the hand, a strangely long-faced Maradona posed for another picture.

Maradona currently resides in Dubai as 'honorary sports ambassador', helping the state with media relations in all major international sports events.

He has said in the last week that he will only be able to see his new son, Diego Fernando, when his commercial obligations finish in June.

As for now, he seems to be enjoying the high-life in Dubai, and can't keep away from a photo opportunity with the good and the great from sport.

Rory McIlroy"s former rival Oliver Fisher misses out on US Tour

The sorry story of Rory's ex-rival: Fellow Brit Fisher misses out on US tour after final-hole bogey

Sad story: Oliver Fisher won the Czech Open in 2011

Sad story: Oliver Fisher won the Czech Open in 2011

When Oliver Fisher and Rory McIlroy turned pro in successive years in 2006 and 2007, it appeared a close call as to which of the pin-ups of the amateur game would enjoy the more successful career.

What has happened in the space of 24 hours in America summed up how things transpired.

McIlroy was named the US Tour Player of the Year in a vote of his peers, while Fisher, in a valiant effort to get on the American circuit next year, bogeyed his final hole at qualifying school to miss out by a shot.

It was rough on the 24-year-old Londoner, who had birdied the previous three holes to give himself a chance.

Now Fisher has to decide whether he wants to play on the US Tour's reserve circuit, the Web.com Tour, and earn his privileges for the regular tour, or return to the European Tour.

With a trophy bearing his name and 2million in career earnings, Fisher is hardly a failure.

It just must feel like that every time he looks at his old amateur rival.

As for McIlroy, he became the youngest to be named Player of the Year since Tiger Woods in 1998, and the second European in a row to win following Luke Donald in 2011. 'It's always nice to be recognised by your peers, and particularly when you think who has won this award in the past,' said McIlroy.

After a few days in Aspen, Colorado with his girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki, the 23-year-old has moved on to Boston, where he conducted a teleconference while being driven on the freeways.

In between losing him as he went through tunnels, he revealed that a more businesslike approach had paid full dividends these past 18 months, and acknowledged that Wozniacki's dedication to her sport had rubbed off on him.

'Seeing how hard she works definitely flipped a switch for me,' he admitted.

'I think after winning the US Open last year I realised that my career had gone up a level, and I needed to become a little more professional and businesslike.'

Meanwhile, as one Fisher was missing out at Q-school in California, another – Ross, no relation – was breezing through, finishing second behind South Korea's Lee Dong-hwan. Englishman Fisher, 32, saw his career nosedive last year after being part of the winning Ryder Cup team at Celtic Manor in 2010.

'This year has been a work in progress,' he said, referring to a couple of runner-up finishes in Europe. Fisher hits it long and high, and it would be no surprise to see him revive his career in America.

Also clutching a tour card is American Erik Compton, the bravest man in professional golf. He underwent two heart transplants before his 30th birthday, but nothing, it seems, will stop Compton, now 33, pursuing his dream.

Singapore Open: Rory McIlroy clinches European Tour money list

McIlroy nabs European title as Manassero helps him out by beating Oosthuizen

UPDATED:

12:58 GMT, 11 November 2012

A 30-foot eagle putt on the final green at the Barclays Singapore Open made Rory McIlroy the European Tour's youngest money list winner since Sandy Lyle in 1980.

But it was only when 19-year-old Italian Matteo Manassero also eagled the same hole more than two hours later that McIlroy could crack open the champagne again.

Already with the PGA Tour title in the bag, the 23-year-old world number one emulated the double achieved by Luke Donald last season when Manassero beat South African Louis Oosthuizen with a 12-foot putt at the third play-off hole.

If Oosthuizen had won he could still
have caught McIlroy, but instead Manassero became the first player to
win three times on the circuit before the age of 20. Not even Seve
Ballesteros managed that.

McIlroy, watched during the week by
girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki, stormed through to third place with a
closing six-under-par 65.

'I left myself a little bit too much
to do to win, but it was a great way to finish off the round and the
tournament,' said the Northern Irish star, who still has his defence of
the Hong Kong Open and the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai to come
this next fortnight.

The race would still have been alive
if either Peter Hanson or Oosthuizen had played in Hong Kong or at this
week's South African Open, but they have not entered.

On clinching the money list double McIlroy said: “It really is hugely satisfying to finally become the European number one, especially after finishing second two of the last three years.

'It has always been one of my goals
ever since securing my Tour card five years ago, but then to also end
the year as both European and PGA Tour number one is just amazing.

'I feel so proud and humbled to join so many fabulous names in Europe who have won the Order of Merit.

'To be able to accomplish this goal
with still two events remaining means that I can head to my UBS Hong
Kong Open defence and the DP World Championship Dubai without that added
pressure and just really enjoy my golf.

'Winning a second major championship
(the USPGA in August by eight shots just like his US Open triumph last
season) already made it a fabulous season, but then to follow Luke
Donald in becoming number one in both Europe and the States is the icing
on the cake after a fabulous season.

'I set myself a number of ambitious goals at the start of the year, and to have ticked so many of the boxes feels great.

'A lot of hard work went into this
and I am really proud of what I've achieved in 2012. I would like to
give special thanks to the team around me for all the support they have
given me throughout the year.

'I've still got two events remaining
this year and the goal is still to try and win at least once more before
the end of the year. Beyond that I'm looking forward to a good break
over the winter!

'I've got a healthy lead in the world
rankings, but with so many very good players on both sides of the
Atlantic it will not be a time to be resting on my laurels. My goal is
to push on in the new year.

'Monty (Colin Montgomerie) won eight Order of Merits in his prime and I have won one, so there is plenty of ground to make up.

'Also Jack Nicklaus won 18 Majors and
I now have my name on two, so targeting the majors will still be my
main focus next season.'

Manassero, just 17 when he became the
Tour's youngest-ever winner in Spain two years ago, had slipped from
29th in the world to 85th and said: 'This year has been a little tough
for me and I'm glad this came.

'I'm going through a few swing
changes and have picked up length. The driver is the most important
thing – I changed it this week and it gave me a few extra yards.

'It's been an extremely long day, but
the adrenalin kept me going and the key, I think, was starting really
well with a few birdies this morning.'

The Verona youngster made four in a
row from the third hole in a third round that resumed at 7.30am and
after posting a 64 for a two-stroke lead he grabbed two more birdies
early in the final round.

They dried up after that, however,
and Oosthuizen caught him with three in a row around the turn, only to
bogey the 12th and 13th.

A chip-in for a two on the 201-yard
next increased the pressure again, however, and Manassero bogeyed the
15th after driving into rough.

When Oosthuizen pitched to a foot on
the last for a 67 he went ahead again, but Manassero's two-putt birdie
gave him a 69 and forced sudden death on 13 under par.

Both birdied the 18th again, then
parred it with Oosthuizen lipping out from under five feet and after
returning to the tee again – they actually played the 542-yard hole five
times during the day – it was Manassero who came up with the decisive
stroke to claim the first prize of over 618,000.

He has earned over 2.5million in his career already – and will not be 20 until next April.

McIlroy admits he deserves criticism for skipping WGC event to be with Wozniacki

UPDATED:

12:20 GMT, 7 November 2012

Rory McIlroy has defended his decision to skip last week’s WGC-HSBC Champions tournament in China to watch his girlfriend play tennis but admits that the criticism of his no-show was fair.

The world No 1 returns to action at this week’s co-sanctioned Singapore Open after taking a week off to cheer on Caroline Wozniacki at the Tournament of Champions in Bulgaria, a break he said was necessary despite the disappointment of golf fans.

'I think the criticism is fair… it’s a World Golf Championship event, one of the big ones. It was a tough one to miss, especially watching it on television,' McIlroy told reporters on Wednesday.

'But I can’t play every week. If I had played that I would have finished the season having played in Turkey, after the Ryder Cup and the FedEx Cup stuff. It’s just too much and one event had to miss out and that was it.

'I played the course at Mission Hills a couple of years ago and didn’t really like it. Thought it was a course where I would get frustrated and am glad the event is going back to Shanghai next year.'

World No 2 Tiger Woods also skipped the Shenzhen event in favour of rest and McIlroy realises that since rising to the top of the game, he needs to strike the right balance between playing, fulfilling media commitments and taking time off.

'Managing time is a very important part of my life,” the 23-year-old Northern Irishman added.

'I thought I did a little bit better this season than I did last year after I won the U.S. Open in 2011. People want more of you, they want you to do more things and you have to learn how to say ‘no’.

'You have to be selfish sometimes. First and foremost, you have to look after yourself and fit in the things that you want to do.

'I am in a fortunate position that I can dictate where I want to play, what I want to do and where I want to go and as long as I am in that position then that’s lovely.'

Before taking their break, McIlroy and Woods squared off in a lucrative 18-hole exhibition in Guangzhou and despite beating the American in a good-natured showdown, the Ulsterman maintains their friendship does not compromise their rivalry.

'It’s not difficult to be competitive against him at all,' McIlroy said. 'For me, I never go into a tournament trying to beat just one player I try to play the golf course the best I can.'

'There are going to be times where I come up against friends and guys I have close links with and you don’t think about those things,' he added.

'You just try and play the best you can. I am happy for the guy next to me to shoot seven-under as long as I shoot eight-under and win. I don’t care if they play well or not, I just want to play better.'

David Beckham is set to quit US football team LA Galaxy and may move to New York so his wife can pursue her fashion career.

The 37-year-old star, who has become arguably more famous off the pitch than on it, is not expected to renew his one-year rolling contract with the club, which comes to an end on December 31.

Sources close to the former England and Manchester United player, who moved to the US from Spain’s Real Madrid as part of a 20 million deal in 2007, said he has no plans to retire from football.

But it is understood he and his wife Victoria, 38, are considering a move to New York with sons Brooklyn, 13, Romeo, ten, Cruz, seven and 16-month-old daughter Harper.

A source said: ‘Talks have begun about the next step for the family and New York is one of the options being talked about seriously.

‘LA has given the family the outdoors lifestyle that they’ve loved for five years. But now the children are getting older and the couple both look to the future in their careers.’

Former Spice Girl Victoria is understood

The school overlooks Central Park and fees start at 23,221 a year. It boasts Caroline Kennedy, daughter of former President John F Kennedy, socialite Paris Hilton and Lady Gaga among its alumni.

Since moving to the US five years ago, Victoria has established herself as a designer and showcased her 2013 collection at New York Fashion week in September.

This week Beckham was asked if he had another season in him, two years shy of turning 40.

‘Who knows’ he said. ‘I’m going to enjoy being in the play-offs… and then we’ll see how this body feels. Even when I stop playing, I’ll have a hunger to do something better and be the best.’

Last night their spokesman said: ‘Since David and Victoria landed in America there has been speculation they will leave, yet they still love living there. David’s sole focus at the moment is winning another Championship.’

Victoria’s spokesman said: ‘Right now it’s business as usual and the family are happy here in LA.’
