Great Britain duo Rory Warlow and Richard Brickell narrowly missed out on places in the final of the men's skeet.

Warlow, 22, from Plymouth, began the day four points off the lead and 36-year-old Brickell, from Newbury, a point further back following Monday's opening qualifiers.

Another big crowd had gathered on the shotgun range at the Royal Artillery Barracks for the skeet – where competitors fire at clay targets from seven different positions.

Both Brits realistically needed to shoot perfect 50s over their two remaining rounds to stand any chance of progressing, and both opened up with 25 to raise the hopes of the noisy home support.

But Warlow missed two shots in round two and Brickell one, leaving them tied on 118, just two points short of forcing a shoot-off.

America's Vincent Hancock leads the way going into this afternoon's final with a total of 123, missing just two clays over all five rounds.

Charlotte Kerwood is 13th in the world rankings, making her Great Britain's highest ranked competitor for that discipline and most likely to have been selected ahead of Burton.

But Burton, 25, who is 34th in the world, won gold in shotgun at the ISSF World Cup in Italy and hoped she had put herself in contention for an Olympic place.

Burton told Sportsmail: 'I read through the selection policy and put it forward – although I haven't personally dealt with it.

'As a competing athlete it's not right for me to get involved with the politics of it. It's in hand and I'm waiting to hear the same as the others. We should find out in the next couple of weeks.'

Team GB Shooting team leader Phil Scanlan said: 'I completely understand, it's really tough to get to an Olympics and this is in our home country.

'Some decisions are terribly close. There's always a winner and a loser. You expect those athletes who are close to appeal. It can be a life-changing decision.'

An announcement on the final place is expected in early June.

The team will be led by former double Olympic champion Richard Faulds, 35, who has been selected for his fifth successive Games.

He will be competing against world number one Peter Wilson, 25, in the men's Double Trap, who recently set a world record in the event.

Elena Allen, a 2010 Commonwealth Games double gold medallist, will represent Team GB in the women's Olympic skeet class.

There will be Olympic debuts for Jennifer McIntosh, 20, and James Huckle, 21, who are the youngest members of the British shooting squad.

The other members are Richard Brickell, Georgina Geikie, Jonathan Hammond, Ed Ling, and Rory Warlow. And Scanlan is confident of bringing back some medals.

He added: 'I really do believe we have some great opportunities for medals. We've got a nice blend of youth and experience in the team. The team is really well balanced.'

Team GB will compete across all three disciplines on the Olympic shooting programme – shotgun, pistol and rifle – at the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich.'
