Mauricio Pochettino's first game in charge of Southampton ended in a goalless draw with Everton at St Mary's.

Both sides missed a number of opportunities, with Nikica Jelavic's scuff from close range the most glaring, as Everton failed to close the gap to fourth-placed Tottenham.

Follow Sportsmail's coverage of the Barclays Premier League as Southampton host Everton at St Mary's to wrap up the weekend's fixtures. It's Mauricio Pochettino's first game in charge as Saints boss following the brutal sacking of Nigel Adkins and he faces a tough test with the Champions League chasing Toffees visiting the south coast.

Southampton 0 Everton 0

Southampton: Boruc; Clyne, Yoshida, Hooiveld, Shaw; Schneiderlin, Cork; Puncheon, Ramirez, Guly; Lambert.

Subs: K Davis, Richardson, Fox, S Davis, Chaplow, De Ridder, Rodriguez.

Everton: Howard; Coleman, Jagielka, Distin, Baines; Naismith, Neville, Osman, Pienaar; Fellaini; Jelavic.

Subs: Mucha, Duffy, Heitinga, Oviedo, Hitzlsperger, Mirallas, Anichebe.

4 mins: Close! Jagielka is inches away from turning the ball into his own net after Lambert breaks clear down the right and drills the ball across goal looking fro Guly at the back post.

3 mins: Plenty of early possession for Southampton who, as expected, start with Puncheon on the right, Guly on the left and Ramirez in the hole.

8.00pm: Chants of 'one Nigel Adkins' can be heard ringing around St Mary's at kick-off…

7.58pm: The players are out on the pitch and we're ready to go… No particularly loud booing can be heard though there's plenty of those white hankies around.

7.52pm: There are hordes of cameramen awaiting Pochettino's appearance through the tunnel… We're told there's plenty of Argentine journalists present at St Mary's too.

7.44pm: Southampton fans are planning on waving white handkerchiefs tonight in protest to owner Nicola Cortese's decision to appoint Pochettino. (White hankies are often waved to protest in Spanish-speaking countries by the way, the Saints faithful aren't going mad).

Gone but not forgotten: Ex-Southampton manager Nigel Adkins

7.36pm: Everton boss David Moyes has just criticised Southampton's decision to sack Adkins in his pre-match interview. 'He's earned the right to be here,' said the Scot. 'I'm disappointed for Nigel and I would have liked to have seen him here tonight.'

7.30pm: So, Pochettino has brought back the big guns in Ramirez and Lambert – who were rested by his predecessor Nigel Adkins for the trip to Chelsea. You get the feeling Argentine knows he needs at least a point tonight otherwise the fans will be on his back straight away.

7.21pm: Everton make just one change from the side that drew 0-0 at home to Swansea with Steven Naismith coming in for Victor Anichebe.

7.20pm: The teams are in and Pochettino has made two changes from the team that started the 2-2 draw at Chelsea, with Rickie Lambert and Gaston Ramirez coming in for Steven Davis and Jay Rodriguez.

7.10pm: Good evening everyone and welcome to Sportsmail's live coverage of Southampton versus Everton in the Barclays Premier League. Tonight, of course, is the first game of Mauricio Pochettino's reign at Southampton. He's just given an interview to Sky Sports in Spanish through an interpreter … which I have to admit was rather surreal to witness following on from Nigel Adkins.

David Moyes wants new goalkeeper for Everton

Moyes plots keeper swoop after growing concerned over Howard's form

UPDATED:

Everton will step up their search for a new goalkeeper with David Moyes concerned that a lack of competition is harming Tim Howard’s form.

Howard’s 196 consecutive Premier League starts is the longest run of any player in the top-flight, but Moyes admitted he should have come out to claim the freekick that led to Sebastien Bassong’s last-minute equaliser for Norwich in a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

With Howard’s deputy Jan Mucha out of contract at the end of the season, former Arsenal keeper Alex Manninger, ex-Celtic No.1 Artur Boruc, the Philadelphia Union’s Zac MacMath and Egyptian Adam Mansour are among those to be given a trial in recent weeks as Everton look to bring in someone who will push the 33-year-old American harder.

Asked if that would benefit Howard, Moyes said: ‘Yes, you need competition for every position and everybody has got to make sure they’re at the top of their game. We have to make sure we’re not continually making mistakes that lead to goals.’

Howard’s ever-present status was the main reason John Ruddy played just 81 minutes of first-team football in five years at Everton before relaunching his career at Norwich.

Steven Naismith’s early goal was the first Ruddy had conceded in five hours and 45 minutes, but he made two fine saves from Leighton Baines before limping off with a thigh injury late on.

Norwich boss Chris Hughton said: ‘Possibly if John was here at Everton he would be sitting on the bench week in week out not getting an opportunity. Sometimes you need to get away and see if you can develop. Fortunately for us, John developed into an excellent goalkeeper.’

Hughton’s side are now unbeaten in seven games in all competitions – a run that includes Premier League wins over Manchester United and Arsenal – and lie one place above Newcastle in the table.

However, as he approaches the second anniversary of his sacking at St James’s Park, the 53-year-old is reluctant to accept that he is proving a point to his old employers after taking over at Carrow Road in the summer.

‘As a manager it’s such a pressurised and stressful job that it’s a great relief to win games and get points,’ said Hughton.

‘But anything that’s in the past is very much in the past.

‘I was delighted to get the opportunity to manage at Norwich. It’s a wonderful club that we hope we can keep going in the right direction. For any plusses, it’ s plusses for all.’

It was former Newcastle defender Bassong who headed in Javier Garrido’s freekick, and the Cameroon international warned that Norwich cannot afford to get carried away with their recent success.

‘It’s important to keep our heads right and not to think like we are big players or a big team,’ said Bassong.

High flying: Norwich are enjoying a rich vein of form

‘We’ve got to stay humble and keep working because that’s the only way we can get a result. If we start thinking we’re someone else, it’s not going to work.

‘It’s true we have just beaten some top-four teams but there’s no bad team in this league. I hope they underestimate us because that’s a good position for us.’

It was the third time Everton have conceded a last-minute equaliser this season following similar slips against Newcastle and Fulham.

Having taken just one point from two games against Reading and Norwich, Moyes’s side now face Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham in the next three fixtures.

‘It worries me a bit that we didn’t take enough from these two games,’ admitted the Everton boss.

‘They’re the sort of games that realistically if you want to be in amongst it you’d be looking to take some points.’

West Ham 4 Southampton 1: Noble and Nolan help Hammers see off sloppy Saints

Mark Noble's brace helped West Ham continue their fine start to life back in the top flight at the expense of fellow new boys Southampton.

The Hammers have adapted to life in the Barclays Premier League far better than the side that finished above them in the Championship and picked up their fourth win of the campaign.

After a dour first half at Upton Park, Sam Allardyce's men came flying out of the blocks after the restart and netted twice in a three-minute spell.

Noble broke the deadlock with a
40-yard free-kick that drifted past debutant goalkeeper Artur Boruc,
before captain Kevin Nolan tapped home a Yossi Benayoun cross at the
back post.

Southampton threatened a comeback
when Adam Lallana exquisitely fired home, but Noble netted a penalty
before substitute Modibo Maiga superbly curled home to secure the three
points.

West Ham looked the brighter side
early on but Southampton earned the game's first corner with Jay
Rodriguez inches away from directing home Jason Puncheon's loss cross.

It was one of several threatening moments by the visitors for whom goalkeeper Boruc was looking shaky.

The former Celtic man became the
third different goalkeeper to start for Saints this season and had Andy
Carroll to thank for not making the most of an awful clearance early on.

Boruc was playing behind a re-jigged
backline in east London as Southampton juggled injuries and attempted to
thwart West Ham's aerial threat.

Jos Hooiveld returned to the side as a result of the changes and had to be alert to clear a James Tomkins header off the line.

The Dutch defender saw his own header
on goal saved by Jussi Jaaskelainen moments earlier and in the 21st
minute Rodriguez put a snapshot just wide.

The 6million striker also fired a
free-kick over as Saints tried to break the deadlock, with team-mates
Maya Yoshida and Guly do Prado soon miscuing their own long-range
efforts.

There were fears for Tomkins when he appeared to twist his knee, but he continued after treatment as West Ham upped the ante.

The home side were struggling to
create any clear-cut chances, though, as Southampton went into half-time
without conceding for the first time since their return to the Premier
League.

However, the Saints defence was breached less than a minute into the second half.

Collins could not quite get a toe on Noble's floated 40-yard free-kick, but it bounced in the six-yard box and flew past Boruc.

The opener was followed moments later by West Ham's second after a poor Do Prado pass was not dealt with by Yoshida.

Benayoun won the ball from the Japan
international and his low cross was met at the back post by Nolan, who
tapped home from close range.

Only the fine reactions of Boruc
prevented the Hammers captain making it three in the 61st minute as he
ghosted in and directed a quickly-taken free-kick goalwards.

False dawn: Lallana fires Southampton's only goal of the game

The save proved invaluable as Saints
reduced the deficit two minutes later when Lallana turned beautifully to
strike a half-volley past Jaaskelainen from close range.

The goal came thanks to the hard work
- and wayward shot – of Rodriguez, who was replaced by Rickie Lambert
immediately afterwards.

Saints' top scorer was surprisingly
left out of the starting line-up and came on at the same time as
Emmanuel Mayuka, although it was the former that made an immediate
impact.

First the 30-year-old saw a 20-yard free-kick just go over, before heading a Nathaniel Clyne cross wide.

Southampton were threatening to
quieten the home support but undid all their good work when Fonte
handled as he challenged Carroll.

Noble fired home the resulting spot-kick, allowing the Hammers to coast from the 72nd minute onwards.

Mayuka tested Jaaskelainen as West
Ham endured some nervy moments, but Maiga put the match out of sight
three minutes from time, running at the Saints defence and sending a
curling left-footed effort home.

Mark Hughes is targeting Polish goalkeeper Artur Boruc to challenge Rob Green after his glaring error in QPR's home mauling by Swansea.

Green let Spanish midfielder Miguel Michu beat him from distance with a handling error to open the scoring in the 5-0 rout.

Now Hughes wants the 32-year-old former Celtic stopper, currently a free agent, to come to the Barclays Premier League, according to The Mirror.

Boruc left Fiorentina but has not found a new club and Hughes would love more competition for the No 1 jersey at Loftus Road.

The R's are adding to their squad in other positions too; Michael Dawson is incoming from Spurs – perhaps the centre defender can offer the goalkeeper, be it Green or Boruc, more protection.

Marseille midfielder Stephane Mbia has also arrived in London with QPR interested in signing him.

Artur Boruc says he would keep the door open to a return to Celtic as he confirmed his desire to leave Fiorentina – but admitted he would rather play in a better league.

The Polish stopper has decided the Italian league does not suit him and he wants to live somewhere where his family would be happy.

He spent five years at Celtic and says he still loves the club.

'I have said that when I think of Celtic I think of warmth and love,' Boruc told the Daily Record.

'But at this moment I want to play in a better league and aim for the highest target.

'As for Celtic, though, I would always consider a proposal from them.

'What is really important in my life is my family and I would listen to what they have to say because I need them to be happy.

'I have enjoyed my time in Florence but it seems to me that this is not my league. I would like to go and play in a better one.'
