Paris Saint-Germain won 2-0 at Rennes to maintain their march to the French league title and help eradicate memories of one of the lowest points of the season.

Jeremy Menez scored a stunning solo goal in the 56th minute as PSG re-established its seven-point lead in the standings.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic sealed the result in stoppage time as PSG recorded its first win at Rennes since 2002. PSG maintained its lead over Marseille, which beat Bordeaux 1-0 on Friday.

Rennes has won only one of its past 10 matches.

PSG manager Carlo Ancelotti rested more than half of his team ahead of Wednesday's return leg at Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinals.

Only four of the starting 11 which helped PSG to a 2-2 draw in the first leg were on the pitch at kickoff against Rennes. Back in November, Ancelotti admitted his team was in crisis after it lost 2-1 at home to Rennes, which played most of the second half with nine men.

PSG almost got off to a poor start but goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu did well to turn Sadio Diallo's shot round his left post.

Ibrahimovic came close to giving PSG
the lead in the 21st with a free kick from just outside the area which
flew past the left upright.

The striker should have done better three minutes from halftime when he
seemed certain to score after spinning to collect a through ball from
Menez and racing into the area. However, his left-footed effort lacked
power and was straight at Rennes goalkeeper Benoit Costil.

PSG finally scored 11 minutes after the break, as Clement Chantome found Menez, who beat almost the entire Rennes defense before firing past Costil.

PSG doubled its lead at the death. David Beckham appeared to be close to scoring his first Ligue 1 goal but Ibrahimovic made sure, heading in from practically on the goal line for his 26th league goal of the season.

PSG centre back Thiago Silv did not play in the match and is a doubt for Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg at Barcelona due to a knee problem, said coach Carlo Ancelotti.

'Thiago Silva suffered a knock on his knee against Barcelona on Tuesday,' Ancelotti said. 'Will he be ready for Wednesday I don't know, we'll see.'

Ancelotti also said PSG's Italy midfielder Thiago Motta, who has been suffering with a thigh injury, would face a last-minute fitness test.

PSG will already be without suspended holding midfielder Blaise Matuidi for the return leg at the Nou Camp.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew must feel he has suffered a curse since signing his eight-year deal at the end of September.

His struggling side have won just one
of their nine Barclays Premier League matches since he penned the
extraordinary deal.

On top of that Newcastle, who have secured a place
in the knock-out stages of the Europa League with two wins and a draw,
have suffered horrendous injury problems.

Key players such as Yohan Cabaye and Steven Taylor are out until February, while playmaker Hatem Ben Arfa has been sorely missed in their last three matches, which have all ended in defeat.

Newcastle have another gruelling week ahead. They face Wigan at St James' Park on Monday then travel to Bordeaux for their final European group match, which they need to win to top Group D.

Midfield enforcer Cheick Tiote, speaking after the 2-1 midweek defeat at Stoke, said: 'If you play well like we did, then you expect to win the game so, if we continue to play like this, we will get three points again very soon.'

Meanwhile, Newcastle have revived their interest in versatile Anderlecht defender Cheikhou Kouyate.

Anderlecht value the Senegalese at 8.5million, which may prove too expensive for Newcastle manager Alan Pardew.

Sylvain Marveaux scored his first goal for Newcastle as Alan Pardew's men booked their place in the last 32 of the Europa League.

The 22-year-old French midfielder latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Hatem Ben Arfa to outstrip the defence and slot the bll through the keeper's legs.

Sub Fidelis powered home a 79th-minute equaliser but Bordeaux's 2-1 victory over Bruges meant a point was enough for Newcastle.

But the result was marred by injuries to midfielder Ben Arfa (hamstring) and striker Papiss Cisse (back).

France midfielder Alou Diarra has joined West Ham from Marseille for 2million.

The 31-year-old underwent a medical on Friday before sealing his move to Upton Park.

Diarra was one of France’s most impressive players at Euro 2012 after stepping in for injured first-choice holding midfielder Yann M’Vila.

But the former Liverpool player had a disappointing season at Marseille after being signed for 4.5m from Bordeaux.

Diarra was also keen on a new challenge in England or Germany and had turned down approaches from the MLS and Middle East this summer.

His exit seemed inevitable when he reported back from Euro 2012 six days late and was fined 40,000.

Earmarked early as a hot prospect, Diarra signed for Bayern Munich as a teenager and was taken to Liverpool by Gerard Houllier in 2002.

But, after several loan spells in France, he asked to sign permanently at Lens and did not break through at Anfield.

Marseille’s exodus could continue. Further talks have been held with Chelsea about the London club’s interest in Spanish full back Cesar Azpilicueta. And Queens Park Rangers are one of several clubs in for Cameroon defender Stephane Mbia.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was this week quoted as saying Fiorentina had made an offer for the 28-year-old but Viola sporting director Daniele Prade dismissed that claim and cited the player's wages as one reason they would not be pursuing a deal.

Prade told SportItalia: 'Have we made an offer for Chamakh We have not made one because he earns three million euros (per season).'

Prade did confirm, however, that Chamakh's Morocco striker partner Mounir El Hamdaoui would soon join the Florence outfit from Ajax.

'We hope to complete El Hamdaoui's transfer,' Prade said. 'He is a striker that our coach (Vincenzo Montella) likes a lot.'

Speaking to Sport 10, Triaud said: 'It is not worth making things up. I tried to contact him six months ago when the transfer window was open/

'Since I crossed paths with him at the Parc des Princes, he was able to tell me he was very happy in London, loved Arsenal and was fine where he was.
