Mark Cavendish finished second on the second stage of Ster ZLM Toer, but time bonuses saw the world champion claim the overall lead in his final race before the Tour de France.

Cavendish, who was third behind Marcel Kittel in the opening stage, had to settle for the runners-up spot behind Andre Griepel (Lotto-Belisol) and ahead of Mark Renshaw (Rabobank), another of the Manxman's former team-mates, on the 167-kilometre stage through the Limburg hills in southern Holland.

Time bonuses saw him claim the yellow jersey, as well as the points classification's green jersey.

Cavendish, Renshaw, Griepel and Kittel (Argos-Shimano) enter the final two stages level at the top of the general classification rankings, with the race to finish on Sunday.

Cavendish wrote on Twitter: 'Beaten by another massive German today in a wet SterZLMtoer, but happy to have yellow & green jerseys! Congratulations to @AndreGreipel.'

England's players stand to earn more than 100,000 each if they manage to pull off an unlikely championship win at Euro 2012.

Sources close to the FA have confirmed that a pay structure has been put in place after an agreement was reached with squad members, including current and former captains Steven Gerrard and John Terry.

The bonus payments will be heavily weighted towards the team reaching the knockout stages. In addition to the bonus money, England’s players will each receive appearance fees of 1,500 for a win, 1,000 for a draw and 750 for a defeat during the tournament.

The players are set to pay these fees and personal appearance fees, worth an estimated 10,000-15,000 each, to the team’s charity fund. The England Footballers Foundation support Cancer Research, Help for Heroes and the Outreach Programme.

France are reported to have lined up bonuses of 290,000 each if they take home the trophy, while Germany will see their players pocket almost 250,000 each if they win Euro 2012. The German players have, however, agreed to waive bonuses if they are knocked out at the group stage.

UEFA have confirmed that almost 160m will be distributed to the 16 teams taking part. Each country will receive a basic 6m, with performance bonuses at the group stage of 400,000 per draw and 800,000 per win, as well as a bonus of 800,000 for the teams finishing third in the groups.

The team who lift the trophy could pocket up to 18.4million
