Sergio Perez: The lowdown on Lewis Hamilton"s McLaren replacement

So, just who is Sergio Perez Lowdown on Hamilton's replacement at McLaren

From a rookie to a potential world champion in just two seasons, Sergio Perez's rise in F1 has been nothing short of remarkable.

Lewis Hamilton will join Mercedes next season on a three-year deal but McLaren have already moved quickly to sign the 22-year-old Perez from Sauber to partner Jenson Button next season.

The McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh, said: 'We've been monitoring his progress carefully for some months. A string of giant-killing performances, a trio of podiums and a brilliant fastest lap in this year's Monaco Grand Prix that showed us that Sergio lacks nothing in terms of speed and commitment.

'Uniting Sergio alongside Jenson will give us a very broad base of driver ability.'

But just who is the 'The Mexican Wunderkind' from Guadalajara who will attempt to fill Hamilton's boots

As the first ever member of the Ferrari academy to graduate into Formula One, Sergio Perez has caught the eye in his first two seasons.

It is no surprise that the Mexican was top of McLaren's wish-list in the event Hamilton was to leave.

Perez's promising racing career began in 2004 competing in the Skip Barber series. The following season he moved to Europe and spent two years in the German Formula BMW championship.

He then progressed to GP2, finishing on the podium in both races at Valencia and ending the year 12th.

The Mexican's big-break came before the end of the season, when he was signed by Sauber to partner Kamui Kobayashi in 2011.

There was some controversy initially, as he was sponsored by the telecommunications giant Telmex, which is owned by the world's richest man and fellow Mexican Carlos Slim.

Slim's patriotism towards Perez and his 44bn personal fortune provided ammunition to critics who suggested Perez was a 'pay driver' – someone who wasn't up to standard, but who could bring enormous funding to help his team improve.

However Perez responded in style and on his debut, he finished in the points at Melbourne.

Despite being subsequently disqualified for a minor technical infringement, the raw potential was there for all to see.

Perez continued the season impressively, picking up more points in the second half of the season and regularly out-qualifying, the more experienced Kobayashi.

This season, Perez finally announced his arrival on the world stage. Using his well-known ability to manage his tyres, he blitzed the field at the Malaysian Grand Prix and came within a whisker of winning.

His impressive form continued as he recorded podiums at Canada and more-recently in Italy, where he drove from 12th on the grid to finish second, behind Hamilton.

Despite his rapid rise to fame and imminent move to one of the most prestigious teams, Perez maintains an air of humbleness and insists he is still a normal guy.

He said: 'If my racing career ended after this season, I would go back to Mexico and try to become a lawyer and live a normal life.

'When I go home to Mexico my dog has absolute priority. Then I jump into my own bed and later go out to meet friends. And if I come home to my European home, it's the same but without the dog.'

Lee Westwood is open to the
possibility of partnering Rory McIlroy at the Ryder Cup, dispelling talk
of a feud between two of Europe's key players.

Speculation of a rift between the
pair has been rife since McIlroy quit the management company Westwood
has been with for 20 years, with the two then exchanging views over the
split on Twitter.

But according to Westwood, they remain friends and he would love to play alongside the world No 1 in Medinah next week.

Referring to a conversation the pair had at the BMW Championship two weeks ago, he told the Daily Telegraph: 'We were talking about it as we were going around Crooked Stick. I said to him “have you had any thoughts about who you are playing with a Medinah Because if nobody else wants to play with you and you're desperate, I really don`t mind filling in”. We had a laugh about that.

'There is nothing there. Fans must watch us having banter on the course thinking “so where is this grudge” So he left the management company I'm with. So what It was a business decision. There is nothing personal with me.

'There is nothing between us personally that would get in the way. Who wouldn`t want to play with Rory when he's in this nick. I'd love to. It'd be good. In fact, it would probably be way better than good, particularly in the four balls. We'd make a ton of birdies.'

Wood in running at BMW Open… after running TO BMW Open!

England's Chris Wood staged his own version of 'The Great Escape' before starting the BMW International Open with a seven-under-par 65 in Cologne.

Among a number of golfers stuck in traffic and worried they might miss their tee-off times, the 24-year-old from Bristol led a breakaway movement through the fields.

'We finally decided to leg it when we had gone one kilometre in 20 minutes – it was that bad,' Wood said.

'It was about 3.5 kilometres and I was a bit sweaty when I got here, but it was worth it.'

The former England international, still seeking his maiden victory on the European Tour after three runner-up finishes, grabbed no fewer than nine birdies on the Gut Larchenhof course.

There were also two bogeys on his card, however, and with a seven-under-par 65 he finished the day one behind Australian Marcus Fraser and Paraguay's Fabrizio Zanotti.

'It was the best I've putted all year,' added Wood, perhaps best known for his fifth place in the 2008 Open when still an amateur and then his tie for third the following year at Turnberry.

Scoring was low following some heavy rain, but that did not help Paul Casey on his latest return from injury.

Ten years on from scoring a career-low 62 on the same lay-out, Casey – who missed last week's US Open to give his shoulder more rest – managed only a 76 to be down near the rear of the 156-strong field.

Fraser birdied five of his last six holes to set the early target, while Zanotti's round was even more action-packed – two eagles, seven birdies, a bogey and a double bogey.

Wood shares third spot with fellow Englishman Danny Willett and 45-year-old Irishman Paul McGinley, who continued exactly where he left off in Wales three weeks ago.

The 2002 Ryder Cup hero eagled the 577-yard 16th from 30 feet and then almost holed his approach to the difficult 456-yard last.

'It turned a good day into a great day,' McGinley said. 'In all my life I don't think I've been on that 16th in two before – that's new technology for you.'

Colin Montgomerie, back from television commentary work in San Francisco, shot 69, but local favourite Martin Kaymer struggled with jet-lag – 'I only slept for two hours,' he said – and had to settle for a 71, the same as Sergio Garcia.

US Open 2012: 14 year old Andy Zhang to compete

Zhang to become youngest ever US Open competitor at the age of 14 after Casey drop-out

|

UPDATED:

08:12 GMT, 12 June 2012

Fourteen-year-old Andy Zhang will become the youngest ever US Open competitor after replacing Paul Casey.

Casey's shoulder dislocation he suffered snowboarding on Christmas Eve means England's former world number three is not yet fit enough for the rigours of a major.

That led to a call for China-born, Florida-based prodigy Zhang – the youngest player in the tournament since the second world war – who narrowly missed out on qualifying in a play-off.

'(When I got the call), my mind just went blank,' Zhang told Fox Sports. 'Then, I said “Wait! What I am in the US Open'

'I almost teared up,' his caddie, Christopher Gold, added. 'There is zero pressure on him.

'This kid is the best player I have ever seen at 14. He hits shots that pros can't hit.

'And, with little pressure this week, I think he could do very well.'

Casey was annoyed to miss out on the tournament.

'You're always disappointed to miss time due to injury, but it's especially true when you have to withdraw from the US Open,' he explained.

'I've been trying to play my way back and I feel like I probably came back too soon originally.

'It's affecting my ability right now to be ready for the test of a major. I do feel like I'm very nearly ready, but not quite ready for this week.'

There is a chance of him playing at the BMW International Open in Cologne.

Casey missed the first two months of the season, but after four missed cuts in a row on his return – including The Masters at Augusta – things were looking up when he finished 25th in Korea in late April.

But the 34-year-old then had to withdraw after nine holes of the Players Championship in Florida, pulled out of the Volvo World Match Play in Spain and shot rounds of 78 and 76 to miss yet another cut in the BMW PGA Championship three weeks ago.

That remains his last competitive action.

'I so want to play and it's so frustrating,' Casey said at Wentworth.

'I've got to get my brain to trust that I can't hurt it any more. It's amazing how the brain controls the body almost involuntarily.'

He is down to 58th in the world rankings and likely to fall even further this week, while the odds on him returning to the Ryder Cup team – he was not picked by Colin Montgomerie two years ago despite being world number nine at the time – are getting longer all the time.

Captain Jose Maria Olazabal said after hearing that the 11-time European Tour winner had pulled out of the Memorial Tournament two weeks ago: 'I feel really sorry for him. We all know how good he can play.

'All I am hoping is that he gets healthy again and shows form. I wish him the very best.'

Chang was joined in the main draw by fellow amateur Jordan Spieth, a member of last year's American Walker Cup side in Aberdeen. The Texan takes the place of compatriot Brandt Snedeker, out because of a rib injury.

Colin Montgomerie's hopes of playing in another major are in doubt after a 900-mile overnight gamble failed in the US Open qualifiers on Monday.

After a closing 81 in Sunday's BMW PGA Championship – his worst-ever score at Wentworth – Montgomerie drove home to Perthshire to fetch a putter.

He then turned round and headed back to Walton Heath, but after a promising first round 68 missed out on the 11 spots up for grabs following a 72 in his second round.

The 48-year-old said: 'Who in their right mind would do that But yes, I did. I left Wentworth at 2pm, was home at 8pm, had tea with the family, left at 11pm and got here just after 6am.'

Open qualifying at Sunningdale on June 25 is next as he bids to play in a 50th major.

Els launches foul-mouthed tirade at Wentworth chiefs over state of greens

Ernie Els moved into contention at the European Tour's flagship event at Wentworth on Saturday but fumed afterwards about the condition of the course he re-designed.

The South African carded a two-under-par 70 on another burning hot day which took him to five under in the BMW PGA Championship – an event he has been trying to win for 20 years.

However, Els afterwards hit out at tournament organisers over the state of the greens.

'I asked them to put water on the greens, so put ******* water on the greens,' said Els.

'You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. The guys are not happy and I'm with them. The Tour has got to play ball – it's not my job.

'The 15th green is holding, the 16th is not, the 17th is not, the 18th is not. They're all inconsistent.

'I can't keep talking about this. At some point they've got to listen. I do talk, but they don't listen.

'I can't control the wind and it seems like I can't control the greens staff either. They've seen the forecast almost a week in advance, but it's like talking to this wall behind me – I'm fed up.

'This is not a surprise. I've been talking since I landed on Monday – keep the moisture on the greens.

'It gets to me. I want everybody to have a fair and tough examination. Anybody who has half an idea in this game can walk to the 12th green and see. It's dead.

'Somebody is not doing their job. Why is this happening'

Tournament director David Garland said: 'We want a tough and fair set-up. The greens have been hand-watered every night after play.

'This was done last night and because we knew that east winds were forecast, sprinklers were also put on every single green to give them more water.

'Because of the conditions some fairways were also watered and tees were moved forward on the 13th, 15th, 17th and 18th.'
