An inspired performance from Bradford moved them closer to a trip to Wembley as they beat Aston Villa 3-1 in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg.

Nahki Wells opened the scoring in the 19th minute when he latched onto Zavon Hines’s deflected shot before Rory McArdle’s second-half header had the League Two side dreaming.

Andreas Weimann scored a late away goal for the Premier League side but Carl McHugh's header soon after gave the League Two side a two-goal lead going into the second leg at Villa Park on January 22.

Aston Villa 0 Wigan 3: Lambert's hapless youngsters wiped out yet again by rampant Latics

Crisis club Aston Villa alarmingly dropped deeper into a Premier League relegation battle with another abject performance against Wigan.

The visitors, meanwhile, moved out of the bottom three with a conclusive victory to record their first win in seven matches which highlighted Villa's dramatic shortcomings.

Villa, watched by club owner Randy Lerner, never recovered from a disastrous start when Ivan Ramis gave the Latics a morale-boosting lead after only three minutes.

Two goals in the space of four minutes
early in the second half from Emmerson Boyce and Arouna Kone sealed
Villa's fate as their confidence visibly evaporated. They have now
shipped 15 goals in three games.

In the continued absence of such
players as Darren Bent, Richard Dunne, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Charles
N'Zogbia and Nathan Baker, the options open to under-pressure manager
Paul Lambert are very limited as illustrated in this latest defeat.

Just how much a lightweight Villa are
missing the commanding presence of Dunne was highlighted as early as the
third minute when Wigan took a shock lead.

Villa's inability to defend set-pieces
was blatantly exposed in the third minute after the ball ran out for a
corner as Matthew Lowton appeared to handle.

Jean Beausejour's accurate corner was
perfectly placed for the unmarked Ivan Ramis to mark his return to
action after missing six games with a powerful header past the
transfixed Brad

It was the 13th goal conceded by Guzan
and Villa in three games and once again gave the West Midlands club a
steep hill to climb.

Penalty decisions have gone against
Wigan this season and on this occasion they were again out of favour
when Stephen Ireland appeared to foul Shaun Maloney.

Seconds later Maloney had a wild shot
from the edge of the area with a gaping goal at his mercy when Villa
were again on the wrong foot.

Villa battled hard to retrieve the situation but they lacked a cutting edge.

Christian Benteke was extremely
subdued and it was left to the industrious Andress Weimann to pressurise
Wigan's defence in which Ramis and skipper Gary Caldwell were rock
solid.

Pulling the strings for the visitors
was Shaun Maloney. The Scottish international formerly played for Villa
but was allowed to return north of the border because he was homesick,
before joining Wigan last year.

Benteke finally found a route through
Wigan's defence in the 36th minute with a rasping shot only for the goal
to be disallowed with Weimann in an offside position.

After Emmerson Boyce and Maloney were
booked for reckless tackles Villa's best chance of an equaliser fell to
Brett Holman two minutes before the break when the Australian grazed the
crossbar with an angled shot.

All these efforts in search of an
equaliser were to no avail as seven minutes into the second half Wigan
consolidated their lead.

Boyce raced through despite the
attention of three Villa defenders and took a return pass from Arouna
Kone to fire his low shot past Guzan.

In the 56th minute Kone himself got in
on the goalscoring as he took a through pass from Di Santo as he sliced
his way through Villa's dithering defence to score from a tight angle

Villa made a triple substitution sending on El Ahmadi, Bowery and Albrighton for Ireland, Holman and Lichaj.

The changes resulted in more attacking play but the damage had been done as Wigan were content to absorb the pressure.

Liverpool 1 Aston Villa 3: Ruthless Benteke runs riot at Anfield with two goals and an assist

Aston Villa exposed Liverpool's flaws and the flakiness of their challenge for a top-four place by inflicting the Reds' worst home defeat for more than three years.

Christian Benteke scored twice, either side of Andreas Weimann's well-worked goal, before Steven Gerrard's late consolation as the hosts' three-match winning run was ended in surprising fashion.

It was the first time Villa had scored more than once in any half of league football this season and extended their own unbeaten run to five matches, with only a second away win in 17 away league games.

Villa inflicted the same scoreline in
August 2009, and although both sides are at a lower level now, this was
a result no-one would have predicted.

The visitors almost doubled their
league away goals tally for the campaign, which now stands at seven, in
recording only their fifth Anfield victory in 34 visits.

Yet barely 24 hours earlier Liverpool
manager Brendan Rodgers had been talking about targeting second-placed
Manchester City so high was the confidence in his squad.

City are now 14 points ahead and,
worse still, Liverpool failed to take advantage of Everton's draw at
Stoke to close the gap on fourth place with many of their rivals playing
tomorrow.

For their part Villa moved three
points clear of the relegation zone. The opening half-hour was virtually
one-way traffic as the home side set off at pace in search of a third
successive Barclays Premier League victory for the first time since May
2011.

But their eagerness seemed to get the
better of them as there was an air of over-complication and lack of
finesse about their play in the final third.

Stewart Downing, who in the matchday
programme revealed Rodgers had told him he could leave and he would
assess his options in January, started left-back for the injured Jose
Enrique but enjoyed plenty of space down the flank.

Gerrard bundled a shot at goalkeeper
Brad Guzan after a poor pass behind him from Luis Suarez, returning
after suspension, rebounded back off Raheem Sterling before Downing shot
wide after cutting in on his right foot.

It continued with Joe Allen driving
wide, Gerrard's feet getting in a tangle after being picked out by
Suarez's inch-perfect cross-field ball, and Shelvey delaying his shot
long enough got Nathan Baker to block after Suarez capitalised on Chris
Herd's mistake.

Liverpool's inability to take their chances has hurt them in the past and it proved to be the case again in the 29th minute.

Brett Holman passed inside to
Benteke, who took a touch and – with no-one closing him down – unleashed
a low shot which beat Reina off the inside of his right-hand post.

What a difference the goal made as Villa suddenly started playing 30 yards further up the field.

It almost paid off when Weimann
seized on Glen Johnson's weak header to lob Reina, only for the ball to
drop on to the roof of the net.

The Austrian did not make the same mistake just before half-time with a brilliantly-worked goal.
Weimann released Benteke in the inside-right channel and raced into a
gaping hole in the Liverpool defence to turn the striker's clever
backheel under Reina.

Joe Cole's emergence for the second
half at the expense of Shelvey highlighted the lack of genuine
match-winners outside of Rodgers' first XI.

They should, however, have got back
into the game early in the second half when Ciaran Clark clearly pulled
Daniel Agger's shirt in the penalty area, but referee Neil Swarbrick
maintained Liverpool's record of not winning a penalty this season by
ignoring the appeals.

It proved costly as when Cole was
robbed by Holman on the halfway line, Benteke was sensibly quickly given
possession and he danced through the Reds backline to chip a shot past
Reina.
Liverpool laid siege to Guzman's goal in the final half-hour, with
further claims for a penalty when Johnson's header hit Baker's arm also
going unanswered.

When they finally made a breakthrough it came too late with Gerrard heading in Johnson's cross-shot three minutes from the end.

There was just enough time left for
Benteke to escape with a yellow card for pushing Johnson in the face in
front of a rapidly-emptying Anfield.

Norwich 1 Aston Villa 4: Semi-final relief for returning Lambert but Bent hobbles off in rare start

Darren Bent made a rare appearance for Aston Villa, but may wish he hadn't after limping off after 35 minutes as Paul Lambert made a winning return to Norwich with his side booking a place in the Capital One Cup semi-finals.

The Canaries took the lead through Steve Morison, but Brett Holman brought Villa back on terms after 21 minutes.

Bent was then taken off with what looked like a hamstring problem but Villa went on to book their place in the semis with two second-half strikes from Andreas Weimann and a goal from Christian Benteke.

Lambert brought a halt to questions
about Bent in his after match press conference after claiming he has
already answered enough enquiries about not playing the England
international.

He said: 'Look, I want to win, it's
as simple as that, and on another day we might have got one or two goals
and restricted Stoke to one real chance.

'It (the goals tally) is something I'm not actually overly worried about because I know it will come.'

When asked if Bent's inclusion would
improve the situation, Lambert said: 'The team will. It's not just
about one individual, it's about the whole team.

'There never has been a problem (with Bent) from day one.

'As I've said before, I just try and pick a team to win. That's what I try to do, it's my job.'

Queens Park Rangers equalled the Premier League's longest ever winless start to a season today as they failed to overcome Aston Villa in Harry Redknapp's first home match at the helm.

The west Londoners have now failed to a collect victory from any of their opening 15 matches – an abysmal start that is only matched by the Swindon side of 1993/94.

Much had been expected from QPR today in what was Redknapp's first match at Loftus Road since replacing Mark Hughes at the helm.

The Rs boss had never previously lost
a Premier League home debut as a manager, but that record looked under
serious threat after just eight minutes when Brett Holman fired Villa
ahead from distance.

Jamie Mackie's superb header dragged
QPR level after 18 minutes but an entertaining first half was
overshadowed by a nasty injury sustained by Stephane Mbia.

The Cameroonian went to hospital for a
precautionary check-up, with fellow midfielder Samba Diakite also
forced off injured in a second half in which neither side were able to
find a winner.

QPR came into this afternoon's match
eight points adrift of the safety and their defensive frailties were
quickly exposed as Christian Benteke wriggled free in the box, only to
be denied by a last-ditch Clint Hill challenge.

The effort appeared to put QPR on
edge and only eight minutes in they found themselves behind, with Holman
striking a fierce 25-yard drive that Robert Green, making his first
start since September 1, was unable to keep out in front of the 1,632
visiting fans.

It was the worst possible start for
the nervy home side, who saw Mbia head wide and then Diakite lash over
as they attempted to make immediate amends.

QPR did manage to eke out a leveller
10 minutes after going behind, though, as Mackie met a Diakite cross
with a superb looping header that beat Brad Guzan.

Benteke thought he had put Villa back
in front in the 20th minute but was denied by the offside flag, before
play returned to the other end.

Shaun Wright-Phillips was put through
one-on-one with Guzan by Esteban Granero's exquisite pass, although he
failed to find a way past the American.

The recalled winger came closer again
in the 32nd minute, outpacing Nathan Baker down the right and firing a
half volley that beat Guzan at his near post but hit the woodwork.

The match was entertaining but took a
nasty turn moments later when Mbia was involved in an off-the-ball
incident with Gabby Agbonlahor, which forced the Cameroonian off on a
stretcher after lengthy treatment.

Shaun Derry came on in his place and
helped QPR weather the storm for the remainder of the first half, with a
right-footed Agbonlahor effort the closest Villa came.

Park Ji-sung replaced Granero when the team re-emerged for a second half that took 10 minutes to warm up.

When it did, QPR were on top, with Wright-Phillips, Ryan Nelsen and Diakite all getting away shots in quick succession.

Guzan kept out the latter pair and
was again alert to deny substitute Park when put through on the left,
before Diakite limped off and was replaced by Junior Hoilett.

The tempo began to slow as
frustration creeped in and, after a tame Nelsen header went wide, Hill
almost hit the crossbar with an 80th-minute header from a an Adel
Taarabt corner.

Armand Traore tested Guzan as QPR

QPR midfielder Stephane Mbia was taken to hospital after a nasty clash of heads with Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor during this afternoon's match at Loftus Road.

The Villa man (right) immediately turned to tend to his fallen opponent after the accidental collision.

Mbia required lengthy on-field treatment, as the game was held up for over six minutes before he was carried off and taken to hospital.

The 26-year-old was replaced by Shaun Derry after 39 minutes and fans of both sides watched intently as he was carried off in a neck brace.

The Cameroon international tweeted from hospital as he convalesces after what appeared to be a serious injury.

For 80 minutes, as Aston Villa made heavy weather of escaping the relegation zone, his decision looked increasingly desperate.

The former Norwich City boss stamped his credentials on the club within days of arriving in the post vacated by Alex McLeish. They were again evident as he once more omitted Darren Bent from his matchday squad.

But with 10 minutes to play of an
encounter with Reading that had only added to the air of general
frustration inside Villa Park, salvation was to hand.

It came in the shape of striker
Christian Benteke, an 8million signing from Genk on deadline day who is
rapidly proving to be one of the finds of the season.

He has the raw power of a young Emile
Heskey and his fifth goal of the campaign was one the former England
forward would have been proud of.

Ashley Westwood swung a corner to the
far post and the Belgium international out-jumped his marker, Sean
Morrison, to head home a goal that may prove priceless in the eventual
outcome of Lambert’s inaugural season.

In fairness to the Villa manager, his
side had looked by far the likelier of the two to find the net. The
noise which greeted Benteke’s winner was a mixture of relief and
elation.

And possibly nowhere more so was the
victory warmly received than on the home bench. Lambert swapped dug-outs
during the summer to be closer to Villa’s core support in the Holte
End.

Although he has made the right noises
so far, those which were coming back at him were the voices of a
supporter-base that was growing increasingly tired of platitudes. After
all, this was just Villa’s third home league victory in 13 months.
Unsurprisingly then, Lambert hailed match-winner Benteke.

‘He’s been fantastic for this club,
and for the national team,’ he said. ‘He’s growing up. For his age, he’s
a strong lad with very good ability. He always seems to get a chance,
whether it’s a header or a shot. He’s becoming a real fans’ favourite.’

One person who is nowhere near the description of being a manager’s favourite, however, is Bent.

Despite the fact that Villa had not
scored in four of their last eight games and were struggling in front of
goal, Lambert believed untried signing Jordan Bowery carried more of a
goal threat than Bent.

‘I have no problem with his attitude
in training, none whatsoever,’ said Villa’s boss, ‘I watch him train
every day. I live and die by my decisions. I’ve picked a team to win,
not to lose.’ Asked what Bent needed to do to force his way back into
his thinking, Lambert replied: ‘Train well and play well.’

Lambert named a Villa team that
contained eight players aged 23 or under in a contest that for all the
world could be labelled a six-pointer. It was the youngest average age
of a Villa side in the Premier League era.

They were on top for long periods. It
will be of little relevance to Lambert that had Bent been on the pitch,
the contest may have been decided far earlier.

As it was, Andreas Weimann blazed over
the best chance of the first-half. Ciaran Clark was off-target with two
near-post headers and Benteke shot tamely into Adam Federici’s arms
when well-placed.

Referee Lee Probert failed to award a
spot-kick after Adrian Mariappa’s clumsy challenge on Weimann as the
Austria forward was making his way away from goal. At the other end,
Brad Guzan had blocked from Hal Robson-Kanu during the early skirmishes.

Until Jason Roberts twisted and turned
his way into the area only for Guzan to block a much simpler shot with
his legs, that was about as good as it got for the visitors.

The travelling support pleaded with
manager Brian McDermott to make a change. ‘It was a good idea, making a
sub,’ he said wryly afterwards. But Noel Hunt’s introduction had little
effect. Of far more relevance was the statistic that Reading have now
conceded 16 times in the last half-hour this season. It’s a trend that
could prove costly.

‘It was not a six-pointer,’ said
McDermott. ‘It’s a game of football. Villa have 13 points, they want
more than that. We have nine and we want more than that.’

But for Benteke, Reading would have.

Aston Villa 0 Arsenal 0: Fans turn on Wenger chanting 'you don't know what you're doing'

|

UPDATED:

00:38 GMT, 25 November 2012

With a wild, haunted look in his eyes, Arsene Wenger refused point-blank to explain the 86th-minute substitution which caused Arsenal fans to round on him and sing: 'You don't know what you're doing.'

The result was still in the balance against struggling Villa when the Frenchman took off his only striker, Olivier Giroud, and replaced him with midfielder Francis Coquelin.

It caused outrage in one corner of the ground, where Wenger's judgment call was openly dismissed and even mocked for the first time by his normally faithful travelling fans.

Frustration: Olivier Giroud could not get on the scoresheet before he was substituted

In one of the most bizarre press
conferences of his career, he scoffed at the idea that the club's
supporters deserved an explanation, insisted that he was still at the
height of his managerial powers, and claimed the assembled media were
suffering from Alzheimer's disease if they thought differently.

If a meltdown was possible in freezing Birmingham, this was it.

Toothless Arsenal managed just one accurate shot, but Wenger was in no mood to appease anyone.

'I won't explain my decision to make that substitution, I don't have to explain every decision and substitution I make.'

Asked if the taunts had hurt him, he
turned on his interrogator and said: 'No. I have managed for 30 years at
the top and if I have to convince you I can manage a team, it would be
an insult to you.

'How long have you managed for How
many games have you managed If I come to see one of your matches I
promise you I'll sit in the stand and say, “You do know what you're
doing”.'

He is clearly wounded by the attacks,
because he reminded his critics how they had laid into him last season,
only for his team to recover sufficiently to make the Champions League.

'You forget what you wrote last September, October, November. You have a little bit of Alzheimer's.'

Yesterday there was almost nothing to forget.

But Wojciech Szczesny did save the
Gunners from total humiliation when he tipped Villa substitute Brett
Holman's powerful shot on to the crossbar.

Unlucky: Aaron Ramsey tries a flick in front of goal

But even a point at Villa could not
paper over the cracks as the visiting supporters repeated the
now-familiar refrain: 'We want our Arsenal back.'

Such an inept display in the final
third could hardly be explained away by Wenger's assertion that his side
were jaded after their recent Champions League exploits.

This side simply are not hitting the heights required to qualify for a 14th consecutive Champions League campaign.

Doubtless the fans were also frustrated by Wenger's failure to inject some late quality in the form of Jack Wilshere.

The manager said he wanted to protect the England midfielder in such harsh weather.

Asked if he or Theo Walcott might
play at Everton on Wednesday, Wenger snapped almost childishly: 'I'll
decide and I will not explain to you why.'

Villa certainly would not have been
disappointed that Wilshere sat out this match, as they were able to
press and unsettle their guests at will.

Manager Paul Lambert was serving a
touchline ban and admitted that he found the experience 'not great, when
I got punished for contesting something and I was right.

Dejected: Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker clap the visiting fans

'But I thought we played really well
and I think we might have nicked it. Our defence was really strong and
offensively we were well in the game, too. We're a young side and we're a
threat.'

Santi Cazorla did show a rare flash
of brilliance soon after the interval, when he swerved past a couple of
defenders and shot narrowly wide.

Aaron Ramsey looked as though he might score, and even forced Brad Guzan to save with his leg.

Otherwise the Villa keeper was
largely untroubled, though Laurent Koscielny really should have beaten
him from six yards in the first half.

Instead, the central defender ballooned his effort over the bar.

Villa striker Christian Benteke had a
couple of chances to score with his head against the club he once
supported, but squandered both.

Settle for one Arsene Wenger's team could not get the breakthrough

Settle for one Arsene Wenger's team could not get the breakthrough

Gabriel Agbonlahor unleashed a
powerful shot at the Arsenal goal after Holman had dithered, but
Arsenal's rearguard were equal to the challenge.

And that's about the best that can be said about Wenger's team – they stopped a struggling team from scoring.

A stubborn man at the best of times,
Wenger is clearly rattled by the fact that others don't have as high an
opinion of his recent managerial achievements as he does.

He may very well be right when he
suggests that he will one day be sorely missed, if Arsenal and the
Champions League eventually begin to lead separate lives.

The problem is that it could well
happen on his watch – next season – unless there is a dramatic
improvement before it is too late.

Referee: Lee Mason (Lancashire)

TOTTENHAM V ASTON VILLA

Tottenham: Lloris, Walker, Gallas, Caulker, Vertonghen, Lennon, Dembele, Sandro, Bale, Defoe, Dempsey.

Subs: Friedel, Huddlestone, Adebayor, Dawson, Sigurdsson, Falque, Townsend.

Aston Villa: Guzan, Bennett, Vlaar, Clark, Lowton, Holman, El Ahmadi, Delph, Albrighton, Benteke, Agbonlahor.

Subs: Given, Bent, N'Zogbia, Westwood, Bannan, Weimann, Lichaj.

Referee: Neil Swarbrick (Lancashire)

15.50: Lloris hasn't been too busy except for rushing off his line well to make one stop and tipping Benteke's effort away from danger.

It looks like they'll need Darren Bent to come off the bench again to pose some sort of threat to Lloris' goal.

He's a former Spurs player and scored last week. I wonder why he was left on the bench in the first place for this one

15.48: HALF-TIME: TOTTENHAM 0 ASTON VILLA 0

15.47: HALF-TIME: LIVERPOOL 0 STOKE 0

15.45: We're seeing two minutes of added time at Anfield. It has been a battle and a half here.

I'm pretty sure referee Lee Mason will have some questions to answer after this first half. Shawcross should be off, simple as.

15.41: Spurs have just gone close with five minutes to go until half time. Joe Bennett is being terrorised by Aaron Lennon.

It looks like a matter of time until they break the deadlock.

15.37: Peter Crouch is odds on favourite to score first against his former club. It's a really heated affair. John Walters has just clattered into Johnson after a goal kick. It looked like a little bit of an elbow to be honest.

Both Shawcross and Walters are lucky to be on the pitch now.

15.34: Gerrard and Suarez are putting Stoke under some pressure. The Uruguayan finds his captain on the overlap but Gerrard belts the ball out for a goal kick. Much better from Liverpool after a shaky start in front of their own fans.

15.33: It's another booking in this feisty affair between Stoke City and Liverpool. Luis Suarez skins Robert Huth who brings him down with acres of space behind him.

Interesting decision because a red card wouldn't have been out of the question. Luckily for Huth and Stoke, it's only a yellow.

15.28: Friedel's stand-in has had little to do so far at White Hart Lane. It's all Spurs so far.

At Anfield, there's already been some controversy. Kightly has been booked and Ryan Shawcross appeared to have aimed a stamp at Luis Suarez.

15.25: FULL-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 2 FULHAM 2

15.24: Liverpool are living dangerously now. They are under some serious pressure early on at home to Stoke.

15.21: What a response from the Saints. There's three of the five minutes of stoppage time to play. Can someone snatch a winner on the south coast

15.19: GOAL! SOUTHAMPTON 2 Fulham 2

Not so fast! Jose Fonte has scored his second goal and equalised for Southampton! Wonderful finish!

15.17: GOAL! Southampton 1 FULHAM 2

With 88 minutes gone, Richardson looks like he has won it for Fulham. He rifles in the late goal which could seal back-to-back away wins for his new club.

They were so poor in the first half too! A gam of two halves cliche would work right about now…

15.15: Here are the teams for Manchester United's visit to Newcastle:

Newcastle: Harper; Santon, Williamson, Perch, Ferguson; Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Tiote, Gutierrez (c); Ba, Cisse

Man Utd: De Gea; Rafael, Evans, Ferdinand, Evra; Rooney Carrick, Cleverley, Kagawa; Van Persie, Welbeck

15.11: With 10 minutes left at St Mary's, Chris Baird nails a free-kick from 25 yards out. But it's always rising. Goal kick.

Heated: The match between Liverpool and Stoke was a feist affair

Heated: The match between Liverpool and Stoke was a feist affair

SOUTHAMPTON 2 FULHAM 2

Southampton: Gazzaniga, Richardson (Hooiveld 8min), Yoshida, Fonte, Fox, Puncheon (Chaplow 61min), Schneiderlin, Steven Davis, Lallana, Rodriguez, Lambert (Do Prado 67min).

Subs not used: Kelvin Davis, Ward-Prowse, Mayuka, Reeves,

Goals: Fonte 4, 90

Fulham: Schwarzer, Riether, Hughes, Hangeland, Riise, Kacaniklic (Richardson 66min), Ruiz, Baird, Sidwell (Karagounis 72min), Duff, Rodallega.

Subs not used: Stockdale, Kelly, Senderos, Kasami, Briggs.

Goals: Hooiveld og 69, Richardson 88

Referee: Mark Clattenburg (Tyne & Wear)

15.07: Liverpool should be a goal down. Pepe Reina attempts an ill-advised one-two on the edge of the area with Nuri Sahin. The latter's ball is cut out and former Red Charlie Adam is through on goal.

Reina atones for his error and makes a desperate stop. Rodgers will be fuming at that display.

15.05: There's 15 minutes to go at St Mary's. This game could go either way. Neither look like they are ready to take the draw. They want to win this game!

15.02: Gareth Bale has dragged a shot wide at White Hart Lane. That came after the biggest cheer in north London so far comes when Hugo Lloris' name is read out on the teamsheet. Big, big, shoes to fill as he stands in for Friedel.

15.02: Surely Southampton could have done with Rickie Lambert up top to try to snatch a winner against Fulham. He looked disappointed to be taken off.

15.00: KICK-OFF: LIVERPOOL V STOKE AND TOTTENHAM V ASTON VILLA ARE UNDERWAY

14.59: GOAL! SOUTHAMPTON 1 FULHAM 1

Happy Andre Villas-Boas swapped Brad Friedel for Hugo Lloris at Spurs

Happy Andre Villas-Boas swapped Brad Friedel for Hugo Lloris at Spurs

It's been coming for Fulham, and they've finally got that breakthrough. Riise fires a shot towards the goal and Jos Hooiveld sticks a boot out and it goes into his own net.

The shot was going wide. That'll be an own goal.

14.56: At White Hart Lane and Anfield all four teams are lining up as we speak in the tunnel. A couple more games for us to follow.

Meanwhile, Do Prado comes on for Rickie Lambert. Shame to see him coming off, I'm sure the Southampton fans feel the same.

14.54: There's definitely another goal in this game. Neither seems content with the current scoreline. Southampton fancy another one and Fulham have to score if they want a point.

14.50: How did that not go in Fulham have turned up the pressure on Southampton and Sidwell goes close before Rodallega forces a wonderful save from Gazzaniga.

In the end Kacaniklic gives away a fould to relieve a bit of pressure for Nigel Adkins' men.

14.45: Both teams at St Mary's have turned up the tempo. Southampton want a second to kill the game off and Fulham know that time is against them if they want anything from this match.

Jay Rodriguez fires a rasping shot from outside the area, but Schwarzer is more than equal to it. Should be a good finish in this one.

14.43: At Anfield, Stewart Downing has been dropped after he responded by saying he was 'upset' and 'disappointed' by the public criticism he received from manager Brendan Rodgers.

14.41: Over at White Hart Lane, Brad Friedel is missing his first Premier League game since 2004. A remarkable record from a truly top class goalkeeper.

It had to end some time of course.14.38: That's the second booking for Southampton. Morgan Schneiderlin chops down Riise as he tries to make his way down the left. Cynical, but it prevented the break.

14.36: John Arne Riise is receiving treatment early on. He took a nasty-looking stud to the head from Puncheon.

It was in no way deliberate, as Puncheon merely sought to hurdle over his sliding opponent.

Riise's OK though, and he'll be fine to continue.

14.35: KICK-OFF: SOUTHAMPTON GET THE SECOND HALF UNDERWAY AT ST MARY'S

14.33: As promised, here's Aston Villa's starting line up: Guzan, Vlaar, Clark, El Ahmadi, Agbonlahor, Albrighton, Holman, Delph, Benteke, Bennett, Lowton

14.30: Here's the full Spurs team: Lloris, Walker, Gallas, Caulker, Vertonghen, Dembele, Sandro, Lennon, Bale, Dempsey, Defoe

Stay tuned for the Villa line up.

14.26: Although I don't yet have the full Tottenham and Aston Villa teams, I can confirm that Brad Friedel's 310-game Premier League run has come to an end.

Hugo Lloris will deputise between the sticks in favour of the veteran goalkeeper. More team news to follow.

14.23: May I digress for a moment The Liverpool and Stoke teams have dropped. Here they are:

Come here: Jason Puncheon is pursued by Steve Sidwell

Come here: Jason Puncheon is pursued by Steve Sidwell

Liverpool: Reina, Wisdom, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson, Gerrard, Allen, Sahin, Fernandez Saez, Suarez, Sterling.

Subs: Jones, Henderson, Cole, Assaidi, Coates, Carragher, Borini.

Stoke: Begovic, Cameron, Huth, Shawcross, Wilson, Walters, Nzonzi, Whelan, Adam, Kightly, Crouch.

Subs: Sorensen, Jones, Edu, Whitehead, Upson, Etherington, Jerome.

Referee: Lee Mason (Lancashire)

14.21: Apart from that late chance for Rodallega, Southampton have looked the far better side. In fact, they could have capitalised further on the slack Fulham play. At times it seemed like the visitors didn't want possession of the ball.

That said, there's only a goal in this one, and the second half could throw anything up.

14.18: HALF-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 1 FULHAM 0

14.17: Shocking defending allows Rodallega a chance, but he can't get a toe on it to send the ball past Gazzaniga.

Jos Hooiveld completely misjudges a long ball and Rodallega is clean through. He raises his boot to get a touch on the bouncing ball, but it goes out for a goal kick.

14.15: But they'll have to wait a little longer. We've got four minutes added time after the injury to Richardson earlier on.

Fulham get a rare attempt on goal. As Aaron Hughes meets a corner and heads straight into the hands of Gazzaniga.

14.14: Things have settled down now. Just a minute of normal time to go before the half is up. Both these teams look ready for the break.

14.10: Should've been 2-0! Rickie Lambert is in acres of space on the left side of the area. He lines up his shot and powers the ball into Schwarzer's body.

A good save, but Lambert will be disappointed he didn't stick that one across goal into the far corner.

14.08: We're fast approaching half-time now. Martin Jol will want to get his team into the dressing room at this rate.

They have been really poor for the first 40 minutes. If Southampton were more clinical, they could have been a couple of goals up by now. Fulham have given the ball away in dangerous areas consistently.

14.05: That's really poor football. This time it's from the Southampton goalkeeper Gazzaniga. He casually boots the ball out for a throw-in when looking for Danny Fox on the left. What's going on! Neither side can keep the thing!

14.03: It's Schwarzer now who gives the ball straight to Southampton.

Lambert picks out Lallana who squares back in the area, looking for the return. The ball rolls agonisingly across the box. Fulham are luckt to be only the one goal down.

14.02: Fulham get a real let off there. Riise takes a shocking throw-in which is cut out by Lallana.

Luckily for the Norwegian, Lallana's headed interception is in turn cut out. Real school boy stuff from the left-back. He would have left his defence flat-footed and outnumbered if Lallana's touch was better.

It's mine! Aaron Hughes battles with Rickie Lambert for the ball

It's mine! Aaron Hughes battles with Rickie Lambert for the ball

14.00: Fulham are looking short of ideas now. A shocking ball from Hangeland just hands possession back to the Saints. They'll have to do much better than that if they are to turn this around.

13.56: Southampton are breaking really well. Every time it looks like Fulham are settling into the game, the hosts get the ball and are up the pitch in an instant.

Lallana looks very good in midfield. Fulham need Sidwell to keep him a little quieter because he is pulling the strings.

13.52: GOAL DISALLOWED! The home fans are cheering again, but it's not going to stand.

Puncheon gives Schwarzer a nudge as the corner comes in, sending him to the floor. The ball eventually comes to Puncheon who puts the ball in.

Excellent spot by Clattenburg. That was a foul.

13.51: Southampton break very well. Lallana drifts into the centre and picks out Lambert with a cute reverse pass.

Lambert finds Fox who wins the corner.

13.49: Fulham look to strike back. Duff cuts in on the right and puts a lovely ball in. Rodallega can't direct his header goalwards though.

13.47: Huge chance for Lambert to double the lead. Excellent move which sees Rodriguez latch on to a through ball.

Rather than shoot, he finds the usually deadly Lambert. The Englishman skews his effort and the ball trickles out of play. He should have at least worked Schwarzer there.

13.45: Fulham are growing into this game finally. Kacaniklic does well on the left and earns his side a corner.

Rickie Lambert wheels away after his team-mate got the first goal of the day

Rickie Lambert wheels away after his team-mate got the first goal of the day

The ball's a good one but Hangeland can't get it under control quick enough.

13.41: Now Lallana is on the deck. Steve Sidwell caught him with a flailing arm in the face.

It looked accidental though, and Lallana is on his feet again. All's well that ends well!

Funnily enough, Sidwell was the one who put Rodriguez on the floor with a late challenge moments earlier.

13.40: Big chance for Fulham. Bryan Ruiz takes a free-kick into the box. The ball finds its way through to Aaron Hughes who is in acres at the far post.

The defender fails to bring it under his control and the threat diffuses. A better first touch and he would have had the goal at his mercy.

13.38: Play's back underway now after an unsettling start for Fulham. They need to wake up!

The home crowd are unhappy as the visitors carry on regardless despite Rodriguez being on the deck, apparently injured.

13.36: They are brought back down to earth though, as Richardson is lifted onto a stretcher. Really unlucky as he seemed to pull up with a muscle injury.

Southampton make the change. Jos Hooiveld comes on for the defender.

13.34: GOAL! SOUTHAMPTON 1 Fulham 0

Adam Lallana puts the corner in and Jose Fonte is the first to it. He heads in the general direction of the far post and the ball just loops into the net. Fulham had no one on the line to stop it! What a start for the Saints.

13.33: Danny Fox has another opportunity from a set piece. He swings one in and wins another corner.

13.31: The first spell of pressure comes from Southampton. They have won a corner after Hangeland is forced to head a ball behind.

Fox carves out a half-chance for Rickie Lambert. The angle's tight at the far post and Lambert can't get it back across the face of the goal.

13.30: KICK-OFF! FULHAM GET THE GAME UNDERWAY

13.27: Southampton are lining up in their red kit today and Fulham walk onto the pitch in black with a gold and white sash. Three minutes to KO!

13.25: With the chit chat almost all done, the teams are about to come out and get the customary handshakes out of the way before the real action commences.

13.15: Fulham have struggled away from home so far this season, and it's often been their Achilles heel. They have lost to West Ham and Manchester United so far this campaign.

But they are looking for back-to-back away wins for the first time this season. Let's see how this one pans out…

13.07: Rickie Lambert will be trying to beat Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, who turned 40 yesterday.

Lambert, like the club, has battled his way through the divisions and has shown he is worthy of his place in the Premier League by scoring four goals in six in the top-flight.

13.05: Southampton have not struggled for goals this season. They scored two at the Etihad against City and smashed four past Aston Villa at home.

But it's at the back where they need to shore things up if they are to survive in the top-flight.

They will take solace from the fact that there's no Petric or berbatov starting for Fulham, but Hugo Rodallega is no chump. The former Wigan man will be hoping to sink the Saints.

12.55: And as I type the starting line ups are trickling in. Feast your eyes on these:

Southampton starting XI: Gazzaniga; Richardson, Fonte, Yoshida, Fox; Puncheon, Davis, Schneiderlin, Lallana; Lambert, Rodriguez

Fulham starting XI: Schwarzer, Riether, Hughes, Hangeland, Riise, Duff, Baird, Sidwell, Kacaniklic, Ruiz, Rodallega

Main man: Rickie Lambert (right) will lead the line up top for Southampton

Main man: Rickie Lambert (right) will lead the line up top for Southampton

12.50: Let's tackle some team news then for the early kick-off. Fulham could have some problems up top. Dimitar Berbatov looks set to miss the game, and Mladen Petric is also struggling with a calf problem.

Southampton on the other hand seem to have a full squad to pick from. Adkins is likely to welcome back Morgan Schneiderlin and Jos Hooiveld into his side.

12.45: Tottenham are flying high – despite their shock draw in Greece this week. They outclassed United at Old Trafford, a ground where they had previously failed to record a win since 1989.

Gareth Bale, Mousa Dembele and Co await an Aston Villa side who had to wait for Darren bent to come off the bench to rescue a point in their Midlands derby against West Brom last week.

12.40: At 15.00 we've got two games. Tottenham host Aston Villa and Liverpool welcome Stoke. Both home sides had unfavourable Europa League results as Liverpool fell to a 3-2 loss at home to Udinese and Tottenham drew 1-1 with a poor Panathinaikos outfit on Thursday.

Brendan Rodgers is still looking for his first home win in the Premier League with his Reds side. Tony Pulis will have other plans though, and will be hoping former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch can continue his goal glut on Merseyside.

12.35: But United and Newcastle aren't playing until 16.00. First up we're at St Mary's as Fulham travel to the south coast.

Nigel Adkins' side have won only one of their first six games – losing the other five – and, frankly, look like early candidates for relegation.

The Saints boss is hoping his side's home form can help tip the balance in their favour, especially after a convincing 4-1 win over Aston Villa.

Fulham are hoping to bounce back after losing in the final moments against Manchester City last week. They'll be kicking off at 13.30, with teams on the way shortly.

12.30: Welcome, welcome, welcome. Stick with us here at Sportsmail as we guide you through all this afternoon's action.

It's an uncharacteristically busy Sunday given the Europa League action in midweek, and the blockbuster of the day is undoubtedly Manchester United's trip to Newcastle. In last season's corresponding fixture, United slumped to a 3-0 defeat with help from an unplayable Demba Ba.

Interestingly, that defeat followed their 3-2 home loss to Blackburn the week before. What did Sir Alex Ferguson's men do last week again.. Oh yes, I remember. They lost 3-2 at home to Tottenham.

But let's not get carried away with ourselves. Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie are set to start up top for Fergie, and with Rooney setting up his Dutch team-mate for two goals in midweek against FC Cluj, they'll be keen to develop that relationship further. Should be a cracker.

Latest Premier League table and results

Their miserable start to life back in the Premier League had looked set to continue after sloppy defending allowed Darren Bent to break the deadlock in the first half.

It was the 15th goal conceded by Nigel Adkins' side in just five top-flight matches but, for once, their inability to defend did not cost them.

Lambert drew the hosts level in the second half after firing home under pressure and the match turned on its head five minutes later.

Nathaniel Clyne slotted home from close range after latching on to a superb through-ball from new boy Gaston Ramirez, before Jason Puncheon saw a shot deflected in by Villa defender Ciaran Clark to make it 3-1. Lambert netted his second of the day from the spot in stoppage-time.

The big talk pre-match was about Nigel Adkins' gutsy decision to drop club captain Kelvin Davis in favour of Premier League debutant Paulo Gazzaniga.

The 20-year-old Argentinian goalkeeper joined the south coast club from Gillingham in the summer and was one of three changes made after the 6-1 hiding at Arsenal last weekend.

Recent acquisitions Maya Yoshida and
Ramirez were handed their first starts for the hosts, who were quickest
to settle at St Mary's.
Puncheon saw a neat one-two that was just too strong for Ramirez, who
then played through Lambert on the left flank only for the striker to
blaze over unbalanced.
For all of Southampton's early pressure they were being reduced to
long-range efforts, with former Villa midfielder Steven Davis and
Ramirez both screwing wide from distance.

The visitors had not created the same opportunities but were looking
dangerous whenever they attacked the hosts' new-look backline, with a
late lunging tackle by Jose Fonte preventing Bent.

Going forward Adam Lallana was proving Southampton's most dangerous
outlet and attempted an over-head kick during a penalty box melee on the
half-hour mark.

That was caught comfortably by Brad Guzan, and when Villa broke, Stephen Ireland's deep cross was volleyed wide by Barry Bannan.

It was a warning shot that Saints failed to heed as Bent handed Villa a 36th-minute lead.

Saints failed to clear their lines as Ireland's mis-hit shot fell to the
England international, who reacted quickly to ghost in between Yoshida
and Danny Fox to tap home.

It was just reward for Villa as their tactics of frustrating the hosts
and waiting for a mistake by their leaky defence paid dividends.

Ron Vlaar was booked as half-time approached for a trip before the break, where both sides made changes.

Ashley Westwood replaced Ireland for Villa, while Saints hauled off Fox and brought on right-back Frazer Richardson.

Clyne switched to the left as a result for Saints, who saw Puncheon test Guzan from an acute angle seconds after the restart.

Villa, though, were playing confidently with Bent forcing Gazzaniga into
action at his near post after latching on to a nice through ball by
Benteke.

The Belgium international was impressing on his first start and should
have extended Villa's advantage in the 50th minute, meeting a Bannan
corner with a powerful header that flew just over.

Eric Lichaj was booked for a late challenge on Morgan Schneiderlin as
Southampton pushed for an equaliser, with referee Jon Moss waving away
penalty appeals from Lambert at the resulting-free-kick, denying him a
chance at levelling from the spot.

However, the 30-year-old would not be stopped for long as he expertly
controlled a driven Lallana cross from the right and lashed home under
pressure from four Villa defenders.

The 58th-minute leveller seemed to lift a weight off the Southampton
players' shoulders as Lallana soon flashed a 25-yard effort just over,
before Clyne then snuck in to put Saints ahead.

Having started the move, the defender burst into the box and collected
an exquisite Ramirez ball to slot home from close range in the 63rd
minute.

Clyne was booked in the aftermath as Villa introduced Gabby Agbonlahor
and Joe Bennett in a bid to stem the flow, with the latter's first
action seeing Puncheon cut past him and curl just wide.

It was 3-1 in the 72nd minute when
Puncheon picked up the ball from Lambert and showed good control before
rifling home a shot from the edge of the six-yard box which was defended
in by Villa defender Ciaran Clark.

Puncheon received a standing ovation from the majority of the 30,713
inside St Mary's when he was substituted, with replacement Emmanuel
Mayuka curling inches wide in the 78th minute.

Mayuka saw a shot saved at the near post as the clock wound down before
he was brought down in the box by Guzan in stoppage time.

The American received a booking for the challenge and Lambert slotted
home the spot-kick to give Saints their first Premier League victory
since defeating Norwich 4-3 in April 2005.
