Nemanja Vidic has refused to rule out the possibility that he could one day be reunited with Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United.

The Red Devils centre back will face off against his former team-mate when Sir Alex Ferguson’s men take on Real Madrid at Old Trafford in the second leg of the last-16 Champions League tie.

But despite his manager claiming the prospect of Ronaldo return in the red of United is implausible, Vidic believes it is a possibility.

The 31-year-old Serbian told the Daily Telegraph: ‘I could see it [Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United]. He is a United supporter and he still follows United, he still misses the club and the environment here, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him come back.

‘It would be a big ask for many reasons, but I would love to see him here.

‘I don’t know what atmosphere he has at Madrid, so I can’t really talk about that, but all I can say is that I enjoyed playing with him, he enjoyed it here and it will be great to see him.’

Vidic also believes that the Portugal captain is on par with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, who has beaten Ronaldo to the Ballon d’Or four years in a row.

He added: 'They are different players, totally different.

'But in recent years, Barcelona have won everything and I think that is why people have put Ronaldo to one side.

'I have played with him and trained with him and I know how many sacrifices he made to be where he is.'

Luis Figo has said there’s nothing to stop Cristiano Ronaldo from achieving Ballon d’Or glory this year.

The former Portuguese midfielder says Ronaldo is more than deserving of the honour, highlighting his excellent performances for both Real Madrid and their shared nation.

‘There’s nothing to stop [Ronaldo] from winning it,’ the former Barcelona and Sporting Lisbon hero.

‘He is one of the favourites to win all the individual trophies there are, even more so this year, because I think he had a good season in the league and did well at the Euros.’

Quoted in Mundo Deportivo, the 2000 Ballon d’Or recipient added: ‘There are a lot of people involved in the choice, so it is always difficult to know who will win.’

When he scores, he can really go for it. Ronaldo has netted seven league hat-tricks in each of the last two seasons.

Figo is of course referring to the seemingly unstoppable Lionel Messi as Ronaldo’s competition, but even suggests it’s easier to win the honour now, than it was in his day.

‘It was one of the most special moments in my career on the individual side of things, because there are few players who have the opportunity to win this trophy.

‘At the time, there were lots of players who were in with a shout, whilst now there are four or five big candidates.

‘It was a privilege and a proud moment for me.’

Barcelona ace Messi has a truly mind-blowing ability for finding the back of the net and whether or not he’s a safe bet for the Ballon d’Or, he’s already had plenty of reason to celebrate.

He’s Barcelona’s all-time leading scorer, something he achieved aged just 24, and earlier this matched Gerd Muller’s record for the most goals scored in a calendar year. If he is triumphant, it will be his fourth successive Ballon d’Or.

The initial 23-man shortlist, dominated by Real Madrid and Barcelona players and featuring Wayne Rooney as the lone Brit, was whittled down to just three, with Andreas Iniesta completing the trio.

National coaches, captains and selected journalists will vote for the winner of the FIFA crown and the winner will be presented at the Zurich Kongresshaus on January 7, 2013.

They’re arguably the world’s greatest footballers, so what finer way to split them apart than by checking out their stats:

Lionel Messi comes third in Argentina"s best athlete poll

Third rate! Messi loses out to boxer and taekwondo fighter for Argentina's best athlete award

Ask a group of people who you think the best athlete or sportsman in the world is, and Lionel Messi will be a name you'll hear a lot.

Unless this group of people is comprised of Argentine journalists, who don't even rate Messi as the best in their country. Or second best for that matter.

No, it was third place for the Barcelona superstar who finished behind boxer Sergio Martinez and taekwondo fighter Sebastian Crismanich.

Messi's incredible record breaking goal haul – he has 90 so far this year – wasn't enough to put him ahead of the competition.

Martinez won the Olimpia de Oro after beating Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in their WBC title fight earlier this year. He will fight British boxer Martin Murray in April 2013.

Crismanich, meanwhile, was Argentina's only gold medallist in the London 2012 Olympics.

'It is an honor having won this prize contending with athletes like Sebastian Crismanich and Leo Messi,' Martinez said at the award ceremony on Tuesday night.

But having picked up the award in 2011 and being the hot favourite for the Ballon d'Or, Messi won't be too upset.

Mario Balotelli makes me want to kill him, says Manchester City team-mate Pablo Zabaleta

Pablo Zabaleta believes his Manchester City team-mate Mario Balotelli is up there with Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo – but the defender revealed that the Italian drives him mad with frustration.

We have seen the sublime and the ridiculous from Balotelli since his move to England in 2010, but Argentina international Zabaleta is confident that the striker is destined to reach the top.

'Since Mario arrived he has done positive and negative things,' Zabaleta told Omnisport.

'He is a player, a person too, who is very difficult to understand because you never know what he is going to come up with next.

'As a player, sometimes not all you have in the feet you have in the head, and Mario is a character that, as a team-mate, sometimes you laugh at what he does and sometimes you want to kill him. But in the end he is a great person.

'As a player he has a great talent. I don't know if he would be fighting for the Ballon d'Or with Messi and Ronaldo but he would be close to being one of the best strikers in the world.

'As a player, as I said before, he has done good and bad things at this club, but I think there is nobody better than (City manager) Roberto (Mancini), who had him at Inter and brought him here, to make Mario able to be mentally prepared to want to carry on growing.'

Former Espanyol man Zabaleta also revealed his admiration for Mancini.

'I think that Roberto is a manager that arrived at the club with the mission of consolidating the project that Manchester City started in 2008,' he said.

'The club hadn't won practically anything in 44 years and it was possible to win important titles like the FA Cup and the Premier League last year, and I think the people of Manchester City acknowledge Mancini's work.

'What he has done so far is great, but once you achieve these important things you have to stay the same, trying to consolidate this great project by winning more titles.

'Mancini is the manager and the people have given their backing to him, especially after the matches against Real Madrid and Chelsea.

'Right now he is the manager and he will know how to work in the future.'

Cristiano Ronaldo: I want to go to McDonald"s without being bothered

I wish I wasn't famous so I could go to McDonald's, moans Real Madrid superstar Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed he sometimes wishes he wasn't so famous so he could go to McDonald's without being bothered by fans.

The Real Madrid Galactico, who is battling with Lionel Messi for this year's Ballon D'Or, has also revealed he thinks people vote for Messi because they don't like him. But he says he isn't going to start crying about it.

'Being famous is part of your work, your success,' Ronaldo told CNN World Sport.

'People know you everywhere so sometimes I wish to go somewhere, shopping, McDonald's – not a great example – for coffee, and people recognise me but we are famous and we have to deal with that.'

Although the winger won the Ballon D'Or in 2008, his great rival Messi has now won it three years running – and the Barcelona superstar is favourite to do so again this year.

'This means a lot for me. If you speak
about me and Leo, I would put everything in one bag and try to see what
they have done by the year, Who won more things, who played better, who
won the most important trophies. So, I cannot say I deserve to win, but I
think I'm in good position.'

Asked if people voted for Messi because they prefer his image, he said: 'I don't want to cry about that, but sometimes I think yes.

'It's question that I never give
the 100 per cent right answer, because sometimes I really don't know.
Maybe sometimes I have bad image on the pitch because I'm too serious,
but if you really know me, if you are my friend, if I leave you inside
my house, if you share the day with me, you will know I hate to lose.

'People
who call me arrogant, I would like to sit with them and to have a chat
with them to see which way to they think I'm arrogant. Because I think
they need to sit with me to know who is the real Cristiano.

'I will describe myself as a friend of my friends. I hate to lose, I'm honest, a direct person and I don't go around to say things to the people I don't like.

'Sometimes I think I pay the price for being too honest. Definitely yes. But it's part of my education.'

Ronaldo was glowing in his praise for his current boss Jose Mourinho, after the Special One guided Madrid to the La Liga title last season.

'Well, my relationship with him is perfect. I'm sure 100 per cent, 200 per cent that he is the best. Because he deserves, he shows every country who's the best because he wins all the leagues. So, for me the best coach has to show in many places and he has shown.'

Nemanja Vidic: Manchester United skipper warns City "We"ll be winning trophies"

United skipper Vidic warns City: We'll be the ones winning trophies in Manchester!

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has told rivals Manchester City that the current champions do not fear the league leaders.

Vidic, who is out for the season with a knee injury, insists that Sir Alex Fergsuon's side are still the team to beat despite United trailing City by three points at the top of the Premier League.

The Serbian, 30, cited United's experience and the return from injury of a number of players as reasons for his belief that his side will be top of the pile come the end of May.

'If you look at our history and commitment, you know we like to win all trophies and I believe we are the team in Manchester who will keep doing that every year,' Vidic told Manchester Evening News.

'Of course we are confident. We are challenging for the title and we are only three points behind City.'

'We have had problems with injuries but I think against Arsenal this weekend we have a good chance. We have a few players back which will help the manager. We have a good squad – a good balance between experience and youth.'

Despite laying down the gauntlet to
their noisy neighbours, Vidic said that it is 'healthy' to have two
strong teams in Manchester.

'It’s good for the city to have two football teams doing well – there’s a lot of talk and banter. It’s always healthy to have competition and we don’t mind it. It helps to improve ourselves.'

Vidic's knee, injured against Basel in December, is recovering well after surgery and the United skipper hopes to be fit for the start of next season.

It was orginally feared Vidic could be out for a year and that his career was in danger, but he said: 'Everything is going well. I had my operation three weeks ago, it’s progressing in the right way.

'I still have a long way to go but I will be patient. I have motivation to work hard and I want to be back as soon as possible.

'I want to be fit and at the same level I was at before the injury. That will push me to work hard. There is no timescale for my return. It’s not about targeting a date but I hope I will be right for the start of the season.'

There's more chance of Messi leaving Barca! Vidic agent quashes exit rumours

Nemanja Vidic's agent has dismissed any talk of the Manchester United captain leaving the club, claiming there is more chance of Lionel Messi leaving his beloved Barcelona.

Vidic, who was ruled out for the season after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury during United's Champions League exit in Basel last month, has been linked with Juventus and AC Milan.

It is reported that the Serb's wife, Ana, is unsettled in Manchester, and that this had caused the 30-year-old to consider his options.

But Vidic's agent Silvano Martina told Calciomercato.it: 'Vidic for Manchester United is like Messi for Barcelona. How could you take him

'He’s the United captain and a key player for Sir Alex Ferguson. A move next summer is absolutely not an option.
