Branislav Ivanovic defends Andre Villas-Boas" Sunday training

Ivanovic says AVB's Sunday session could turn Chelsea's season around

Branislav Ivanovic has insisted Chelsea's widely-publicised team meeting on Sunday had a positive effect on the squad.

The defender was one of those hauled in on his day off by manager Andre Villas-Boas after Saturday's defeat at Everton, which left the Blues languishing in fifth place in the Barclays Premier League.

Villas-Boas was criticised by some of his squad during Sunday's talks and he yesterday admitted that not all of his players were behind his Chelsea project.

But Ivanovic believes what was undoubtedly a frank exchange of views could be the catalyst to turn the Blues' season around, just as it did two years ago when they went on to win the double.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's FA Cup fifth-round tie with Birmingham, Ivanovic said: 'We had a couple of very good things come out of last weekend.

'We sorted out a lot of problems and we have worked very hard in training as well.

'We are doing our best. It is a very hard period for us but we have to believe, we have to have trust in each other on the pitch and believe that better things will happen for us.

'It is very important to have communication between the manager and the players. For the players, it gives us confidence and we know what we're doing right and wrong. They (the meetings) can help.

'That is why it is good that we have had a good rest and worked hard in training as well. We are ready for Birmingham and the rest of the season.

'We play at home and we have to win the game. I think this is one of the most important moments for us where we can change the rest of the season.'

Chelsea raid Luton for Dasilva brothers as AVB looks to the future

Chelsea have signed three brothers from the Luton youth squad for a five-figure sum each.

Twins Rio and Cole Dasilva, 12, as well as 13-year-old sibling Jay have joined the Chelsea academy after five years at Luton.

The deal could top 1m should they play in Chelsea’s first team.

Luton head of youth Gregg Broughton said: ‘This is an historic deal to see three brothers transferred together. Following our loss in the play-offs last season we were told they wished to look at other options.’

QPR have upped their bid for Chelsea defender Alex, 29, to 4m as the clubs try to strike a compromise.

Martin Keown: AVB deserves credit for changing Chelsea”s defensive line

Andre Villas-Boas deserves credit for making the decision to play a much deeper defensive line (as shown by the average position of Chelsea’s defenders above) but this system needs more work.

The rest of the team — and particularly Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge — played so deep that when Chelsea did regain possession of the ball there was so little on.

The Changing line of defence

It only worked against Valencia because Didier Drogba was strong enough to hold up the ball and wait for players to get up the pitch to join him.
