Edinson Cavani will cost Chelsea 78million if they wish to prise him away from Napoli, club president Aurelio de Laurentiis has announced.

Cavani is one of the options being considered by Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo as he looks to fill the gaping hole left by Didier Drogba.

Cavani fits the bill perfectly after he netted 33 goals in 47 games for the second successive campaign.

But De Laurentiis has warned the Blues they will have to shell-out the huge figure to convince Napoli to part company with their star striker.

'Cavani is not for sale, but we could let him go for €100m (78m),' he told Sky Sport Italia. 'This is not his actual value, but his value to me and he won't leave for less.'

Once the capture of attacking midfielder Oscar is complete, the Blues will look to complete two more deals — expected to be a centre forward and a right back — before the transfer window closes.

Cavani, 25, who is also on the Juventus wanted list, has been watched by Chelsea for some time and scored against them in the Champions League last season.

Brazilian club Sao Paulo confirmed they have rejected Manchester United's 29m offer for midfielder Lucas Moura (pictured right).

United representatives met with Lucas's family and his agent Wagner Ribeiro on Tuesday night and are keen to tie up a deal.

Sao Paulo director Marco Aurelio Cunha said: 'Manchester United made a very important offer of 29m, but they would need to produce a little more. For us, only Neymar (in Brazil) is worth more.

'We do not need the money. The Brazilian economy is good, television pays us and we cannot complain.

'For us, it is still better to have a good player than lots of money in the bank.'

Brendan Rodgers' regime at Liverpool is officially underway as the new boss met some of his players at the club's Melwood training base on Merseyside.

Jamie Carragher, Maxi Rodriguez, Lucas Leiva, Charlie Adam and Jonjo Shelvey were among those called in by Rodgers for the first briefing of the Reds' pre-season.

Absent were those involved in the European Championships, including England captain Steven Gerrard and Craig Bellamy who will be involved in the forthcoming Olympics for Team GB.

It has been another summer of upheaval for the club who have a new manager in Rogers who has released Dirk Kuyt and Fabio Aurelio as he begins reshaping the squad.

Many Liverpool fans were unhappy at the removal of 'King' Kenny Dalglish at the Reds' helm, but Rodgers believes the educated fans at Anfield will take to his style of football.

And the former Swansea boss has revealed the patient nature of Liverpool's supporters was central to his decision to move to Merseyside.

'That was key for me,' Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo. 'If I was to leave Swansea, and I was in no rush to do so, then it had to be the right move.

'(Swansea) understood that way. They understood, because they are educated in football. I think they are much like Liverpool supporters in that sense.

'You look at the teams from the 1980s, and if they passed the ball backwards to keep possession, (the fans) applauded, because they are educated and they understand.

'In that sense, it is the perfect club for me.'

He added: 'It is inspiring. This is a real footballing institution. I walk in every day to the training ground here and you've got the European Cup, a little bust of Bill Shankly, and as I sit in my office I've got a great photograph of some of the great players and managers of the past.

'For me, I embrace that because it is very inspirational and in no way intimidating. I'm just looking forward to playing a part in hopefully changing the history of the club.'

Napoli have set their sights on Chelsea midfielder Raul Meireles.

The Italian club are looking to bolster their squad after selling striker Ezequiel Lavezzi to Paris Saint-Germain.

Meireles, who joined Chelsea on
deadline day last summer after a single season at Liverpool, caught the eye as the Blues overcame Napoli on route to Champions League glory last season.

He has backed that up with some impressive displays at Euro 2012 as
Portugal have progressed to the semi-finals, where they play holders
Spain on Wednesday night.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has made contact with Meireles' agents over a 8m move, reports the Daily Mirror.

Meireles, however, is delaying any decision on his future.

The 29-year-old said: 'I am focused on the Euros and cannot think about my future now.'

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is only looking to strengthen over the summer and has no plans to sell any of the current squad.

The only confirmed departure from Anfield will be defender Fabio Aurelio, whose contract expires next month, while the futures of the likes of Joe Cole and Alberto Aquilani, on loan at Lille and AC Milan respectively, have yet to be decided.

But Dalglish dismissed assumptions that Dirk Kuyt, who is interesting Hamburg, and Maxi Rodriguez, who Tweeted his apparent goodbyes after Tuesday's 4-1 home win over Chelsea, would be following Aurelio through the exit door.

'We are not looking to move anyone out. The only one who will be moving out will be Fabio as his contract is up,' said Dalglish.

'All we want to do is to add to the start we have had (with the squad he has assembled) and see what happens to us.

'The transfer market brings up surprises but what they will be I can't help you, I'm not clairvoyant. But we are not actively looking to move anyone out.'

Hamburg have been making admiring remarks about Kuyt, who reportedly had a 1million release clause written into his last contract, for the last month while Rodriguez wrote on Twitter: 'Last home game and had a goodbye to the fans. Thank you very much to the people of Liverpool for much love'.

But Dalglish, who unlike this season has the Europa League to contend with come August, is focused on strengthening his squad rather than anything else.

'Most of our plans are in place. We need to get the work done and get on with it,' added the Scot, who no longer has the back-up he had on transfers after director of football Damien Comolli left the club last month.

'Conversations happen throughout the whole season, they just tend to pick up in the last week of the season and there have been lots of conversations in the last few days.

'There have been a lot of discussions between various parties which have to be made and we will carry on do our work during the summer.

'We have been talking to the owners throughout the calendar year and have discussed many facets of the job and what it entails.

'You also discuss what availability and what possibilities there are and we've been through every option with everyone.

'It is an ongoing process and not much has changed. Maybe because the transfer window opens there will be some business done – but that is the same for everyone.

'At the end of the season every club and supporter looks anxiously to see what is happening in terms of business being done. But the business-side of it won't be discussed publicly.'

First Liverpool have to get this season over and done with and Dalglish stressed their focus at the moment was on tomorrow's final match at Swansea.

If they better Everton's result at home to Newcastle tomorrow they will finish above their seventh-placed near-neighbours, but the Reds boss said there was no extra motivation required for his players.

'It is important we try to win the game, as we have done for every other game we have played,' he said.

'It maybe the last game but it is important we carry on from the performance on Tuesday.

'We go to Swansea and want to try to continue the positivity and try to get a result for ourselves.

'It will be difficult as they have had a fantastic season and they will want to send their fans away happy.

'We have to make sure we are properly prepared for it. We will analyse the season afterwards. We are just looking forward to going to the game.'

It has subsequently emerged in Holland that Kuyt has a clause in his contract stipulating that he can move to a club abroad for 1million.

There is strong interest from Italian sides Fiorentina and Roma, Galatasary in Turkey and his old club Feyenoord.

Kuyt, 31, is a popular figure at Anfield, has 12 months remaining on his current deal and has never agitated for a move but Liverpool would be unlikely to stand in his way if an offer arrived.

Chelsea have jumped to the front of the queue to sign 30million-rated Napoli striker Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan has been in impressive form this season and took his goal tally to 26 in midweek.

He also helped the Italian club knock Manchester City out of the Champions League but could not inspire Napoli to complete an English double against Chelsea.

The highly-coveted 25-year-old is also high on City's wishlist but Roberto Mancini could lose out after Chelsea reportedly opened talks with Cavani's representatives.

According to The Sun, discussions took place in London on Friday with a view to a transfer in the summer.

Napoli have continually stressed that it would require a king's ransom to convince them to part with their star man who is under contract until 2015.

Liverpool are also keen to partner Cavani with international team-mate Luis Suarez but would need to finance the move by selling flop Andy Caroll.

Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich are also interested.

Wigan's survival hopes received an unexpected boost as they recorded their first victory at Anfield to beat a flailing – and rapidly failing – Liverpool.

Much like last season, when they escaped relegation on the final day of the season, Roberto Martinez's side appear to be hitting form at exactly the right time.

They have lost just once in their last seven matches and a first win at Anfield ensured they remain well in the battle to stay up as they are only a point from safety.

The statistics for Liverpool are damning; five defeats in the last six Barclays Premier League matches – 10 losses for the season – and only two wins in 2012 do not make happy reading for manager Kenny Dalglish.

He is already facing some difficult questions and had he not already won the Carling Cup and progressed to the semi-final of the FA Cup the situation would be even more uncomfortable for the Scot.

Even a late debut for 17-year-old reserves prodigy Raheem Sterling could not lift the gathering gloom at Anfield.

But as poor as Liverpool were credit must go to Wigan who stuck to their task and, unlike in recent weeks when they have been unable to hold on to good positions, they bounced back from Luis Suarez's equaliser to claim a vital victory.

Shaun Maloney's penalty gave the visitors a half-time lead and despite being pegged back just two minutes after the break by the Uruguay international's 12th of the season, Gary Caldwell secured Wigan's first win at Anfield just past the hour.

The early signs were that it was going to be another frustrating afternoon for the home side as nothing they tried came off with passes falling short, going astray or players being caught in possession.

Wigan, by nature of their perilous position, were hungrier and more determined and when Victor Moses got past Jose Enrique, albeit by virtue of a surreptitious handball, Martin Skrtel blocked the winger's shot.

Steven Gerrard's bobbled shot wide
was indicative of Liverpool's play while Stewart Downing fired a
half-volley just wide of the far post after exchanging passes with
Suarez.

Wigan had not threatened Jose Reina's goal until just before the half hour when Skrtel, in trying to clear Jamie Carragher's aimless header, caught Moses in the face.

Referee Lee Mason pointed to the spot and after a couple of minutes' delay for Moses to receive treatment Maloney tucked away the penalty.

Suarez finally forced Ali Al Habsi into a save five minutes before half-time with a 25-yard curling effort before another Gerrard shot was palmed behind.

Andy Carroll replaced Jordan Henderson, who had been the primary focus of Anfield's annoyance, for the second half but it was Gerrard and Suarez – Liverpool's two most reliable attacking forces – who combined for the equaliser just two minutes after the restart.

Suarez moved the ball out to his captain on the right of the penalty area and continued his run to convert the return with a shot across Al Habsi.

The Uruguay international should have
doubled his tally in the 53rd minute but inexplicably punched the ball
over the line from Skrtel's downward header when it when he was so close
to the goal he could have let it hit him and it would still probably
have gone in.

The youngster had one good run along the edge of the 18-yard box which almost set up a shooting opportunity but it was asking a lot for the teenager to have an impact on a game in which a number of his vastly more experienced team-mates had failed to impose themselves.

At the final whistle Wigan's small band of travelling fans were ecstatic but the pervading feeling from those who remained at Anfield until the final whistle was one of growing discontent.

Andre Villas-Boas favourite to replace Claudio Ranieri at Inter Milan

Villas-Boas favourite for Inter Milan job after Ranieri fails to ignite Nerazzurri

UPDATED:

22:47 GMT, 14 March 2012

Andre Villas-Boas has been earmarked for a swift return to management after emerging as the shock frontrunner to replace Claudio Ranieri at Inter Milan.

Ranieri was given a stay of execution by Inter president Massimo Moratti on Wednesday but still seems certain to be axed in the summer, with 12 months left on his San Siro contract.

With the former Chelsea boss on borrowed time, the search is underway for a new coach and is focusing increasingly on Villas-Boas, according to sources in Milan.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire: Andre Villas-Boas is said to be a contender to replace Claudio Ranieri at Inter Milan

Out of the frying pan and into the fire: Andre Villas-Boas is said to be a contender to replace Claudio Ranieri at Inter Milan

Walter Mazzarri is the other leading candidate, but with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis already firing a warning shot at Inter, Moratti is in no mood for an expensive, protracted battle to prise him away and is leaning more and more towards Villas-Boas.

'There is no truth in the rumours linking our coach with Inter,' fumed De Laurentiis.

'He has a contract with us, and our working partnership will continue for at least a further year.'

Villas-Boas' availability, after his recent sacking by Chelsea, and previous record of success at Academica and Porto, has put him in pole position to take over, ahead of Mazzarri and ex-England boss Fabio Capello, who played down his prospects by telling Sky Sport Italia: 'I can exclude a future at Inter. I am 100 per cent sure of that.'

Testing times: Ranieri failed to steer Inter into the quarter-finals of a competition they won two years ago

Testing times: Ranieri failed to steer Inter into the quarter-finals of a competition they won two years ago

Moratti did his best to shield Ranieri from growing criticism, after Tuesday's Champions League exit at the hands of Marseille, by saying: 'It was disappointing, but it was not Ranieri's fault. He did not make a mistake, and I will not be changing the coach right now.'

It is only a matter of time, though, and Villas-Boas appears primed to step back into the limelight, either at the end of the season or earlier, if Inter continue their decline and miss out on third place in Serie A.
