While some Olympians are basking in the post-Games glow of endorsements and television appearances, rower Heather Stanning has returned to reality after rejoining the army.

The 27-year-old won Britain's first gold medal of the London 2012 Games when she partnered Helen Glover to triumph in the women's pairs.

Stanning, who is a Captain in the 32nd Regiment Royal Artillery, took two years leave from her day job as she prepared her Olympics bid and was cheered on by her regiment at Roberts Barracks in Wiltshire and the troops in Afghanistan where Stanning could be deployed next year.

London 2012 Paralympics: Danielle Brown beats Mel Clarke in archery final

Defending champion Brown wins archery gold after beating fellow Brit Clarke

Great Britain's Danielle Brown successfully defended her Paralympic Games title with a narrow victory over team-mate Mel Clarke in a tense women's individual compound final at the Royal Artillery Barracks which went down to the final arrow.

Yorkshirewoman Brown won Paralympic gold in 2008, the Commonwealth Games team title in Delhi two years ago and now has triumphed at London 2012.

Brown met compatriot Clarke, bronze medallist from Beijing, in the final, winning 6-4.

The Britons could not be separated
early on, scoring 27-27 in the first set and 29-29 in the second, before
three arrows of nine saw Brown, who was shooting first, take a 4-2
lead.

Clarke responded to take the fourth set 29-26 and level at 4-4 to force a fifth.

She
required a maximum 10 score on the final arrow to win, but she shot a
seven – her worst arrow of the final – as the pressure told and Brown
won.

In the semi-finals,
Brown claimed a 6-2 semi-final success over Marina Lyzhnikova and Clarke
beat Stepanida Artakhinova, another Russian, 6-0.

Artakhinova claimed bronze with a 7-3 defeat of her team-mate Lyzhnikova.

Brown was relieved she did not have the final shot.

She said: 'That helps a lot. My arrows had all gone and she had to play catch-up, as it were.

'It was a 10 to tie the set and then we would've had to do a one-arrow shoot off.

'I've been really feeling [the pressure] the last couple of weeks, so to actually come here and manage to keep my head in the right place, I'm chuffed to bits about that.

'It's been crazy. I didn't think it would have affected me the way it has.'

Clarke said: 'It's unreal. To get through to the final was brilliant.

'To shoot against another Brit in the final was incredible and I shot really well. I'm really proud.'

More to follow.

Everton and Aston Villa are attempting to pry Republic of Ireland striker Kevin Doyle away from Wolves.

Toffees boss David Moyes has long been a fan of the striker but his chances of getting Doyle have been reduced by Sunderland's purchase of Steven Fletcher.

Paul Lambert could do with extra artillery at misfiring Villa and Doyle could be the man to team up with Darren Bent and get the goals flowing.

Wolves picked up a healthy 14million for the Scotsman and, along with 10.75m from West ham for winger Matt Jarvis, do not need to sell the hitman.

Manager Stale Solbakken said: 'I have not heard anything about Doyle leaving and hopefully he will stay.'

However winger Stephen Hunt is a player the Wolves boss does not mind leaving.

The 31-year-old has just one year left on his contract and Wolves have picked up winger Razak Boukari, 25, on a season-long loan from Rennes.

Everton meanwhile are hoping to seal the M'Baye Niang deal with Caen on Monday for close to 2m.

Great Britain shooters James Huckle and Jonathan Hammond both failed to make the final of the men's 50m rifle prone on Friday morning.

Huckle, 22, from Essex, could not emulate his room-mate Peter Wilson – who gripped the nation on Thursday afternoon when he won gold in the double trap -shooting a below-par 591 out of 600 in qualifying.

Hammond, 32, who was born in Aberdeen but
now lives in West Virginia, fared a little better by shooting 593, but
he was still two points short of making the shoot-off for the afternoon
final.

And they were a long way behind Sergei Martynov from Belarus, who equalled the word record with a perfect round of 600 to lead by one from Belgium's Lionel Cox going into the final.

Huckle admitted he had nobody to blame but himself as his technique began to desert him after the opening round.

'It was tough today,' he said. 'Conditions-wise it was probably one of the best days we've seen on the range, although the wind is flicking about it never got too much strength up, especially at the start of the match.

'I started with 100 which was a great
start and I felt solid, but I had a few shots that didn't go where I
thought they would go and I could feel my technique slipping a bit.

'I tried to stay calm but if you start to make mistakes you get punished pretty quickly.

'You have to relax and keep focused, but I didn't know what was wrong with my technique so I couldn't correct it enough.

'So I stood up, went back down, refocused and I was absolutely fine. I ended with 100, 99, 99 which is a more than respectable finish – if I did that earlier it would have been fine.'

Hammond, who came 34th at the Beijing Games four years ago, found the conditions tougher.
He said: 'I can definitely shoot a lot higher but the conditions were really tricky out there, the atmosphere, the environment, the wind.

'It's a solid score and I'm fairly happy with my own performance, and it's a fantastic experience being out there in that environment.

'I probably made a few mistakes, got the wind wrong a couple times, but I'm only two points away from the final, it's all part of the learning curve and something I can build on.'

Both shooters get another crack at glory when they go in the rifle three positions, prone, kneeling and standing, on Monday.

British marksman James Huckle has missed out on a place in the Olympic final in the 10m air rifle.

The 21-year-old from Harlow, Essex, was cheered on by the Duke of Kent among another sell-out crowd at the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich.

Huckle looked to have given himself a
chance of a place in Monday afternoon's final with two perfect rounds of

The Duke even had some words of encouragement, saying: 'He's shooting very well, isn't he'

But Huckle's final total of 593 out of 600 was not enough to secure a top-eight finish.

He was eventually placed 24th, while the qualification round was won by Italy's Niccolo Campriani, the world No 1.
