Arsene Wenger has demanded Arsenal supporters respect Robin van Persie when the former captain returns to the Emirates.

Wenger sold Van Persie to United for 24mllion last summer and the Dutchman went on to win the Premier League title at Old Trafford.

And ahead of his first return to the North London club, Wenger has pleaded with the Emirates fans to be respectful.

Show some respect: Arsene Wenger wants Arsenal fans not to boo Van Persie

He said: 'I can only reiterate I want the
player to be respected. I've said that for every player who has left,
even players who have left in more controversy than RVP.

'RVP has a massive talent an is a
world class player. Fantastic technique and has plenty of experience.
He's played in a World Cup final.

'You don't focus on what we've lost.
We just want to get round it. We always miss a big player. It took us a
while to get round it, but we've scored a similar number if goals this
season.

'It's always difficult to lose big players

Wenger confirmed that the Arsenal players will give the United players a guard of honour ahead of kick off and says he hopes it will spur his side on to challenge for the title next season.

He added: 'They have been remarkable, especially at home. They've won it in a convincing way.

'What we know is that we will need a great performance to beat Manchester United. That's what we will focus on.

'I have a respectful relationship with Sir Alex. We spoke personally about RVP, that's the only way the deal could be done.

I'm French, but I want the English tradition to be respected. I hope we can have a guard of honour next year.

'We can only focus in out own performance. We are on a good run'

As for the remainder of Arsenal's season, Wenger says the Gunners must focus on making the top four and qualify for the Champions League.

He added: 'We can only focus in out own performance. We are on a good run.

'I'm confident we will make top four. But we need total focus and willingness to do that. We have no room to drop points.'

On the subject of Liverpool striker Luis Suarez's 10-game ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic, Wenger believes the Uruguayan's previous indiscretions worked against him.

He added: 'What has gone against Suarez is his history. That's the only explanation I can find for the severity of the punishment.'

Arsenal and Manchester City look to have missed on Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze after reports in Germany claimed he has agreed to join Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich.

The 20-year-old has emerged as one of the most coveted talents in Europe but it is the Bavarian giants who look to have won the race after triggering the forward's €37million (32m) release clause.

The Germany international has, according to Bild, already signed a long-term deal with $7m a year (6m).

Gotze, who could face his new employees in the Champions League final at Wembley on May 25, has scored 14 goals for his club this season and has won 22 caps for Germany.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger had been prepared to finally splash the cash this summer and meet the Gotze's clause but he will now have to look elsewhere.

The youngster had looked set to remain at the Westfalenstadion
for another year having apparently set his sights on a move to Barcelona.

‘I am very happy at Dortmund and
satisfied with the way we are progressing as a team,’ he said earlier this month. ‘Any
thoughts about playing for another team are very much for the future,
but Real Madrid, Barcelona or Manchester United could be interesting.

'But I'm not thinking of that at the moment.

Roy Hodgson is set to be dealt an injury blow with the news that Jack Wilshere could miss both of England's internationals this summer.

The Arsenal star, who came of the bench for the remaining 19 minutes of his side's 1-0 win at Fulham yesterday, is poised to undergo surgery at the end of the season.

BABY LOVE

Wilshere is set to become a dad for the second time later this year. The Arsenal midfielder's partner, Lauren Neal, is expecting in October.

Wilshere has only recently returned to first-team action after a six-week injury lay-off.

And according to the Sunday Mirror, the 21-year-old may now require surgery to replace a pin inserted into his ankle during an operation in 2011.

That would leave Roy Hodgson without Wilshere for the friendlies against Republic of Ireland on May 29 and June 2.

Arsene Wenger meanwhile has blasted Steve Sidwell for the reckless tackle which earned him a red card in Arsenal's vital win over Fulham.

Sidwell will miss Fulham's last four games of the season after he saw red for the second time in two appearances.

The former Arsenal midfielder, who was given a straight red for a dangerous tackle on QPR defender Armand Traore three weeks ago, caught Mikel Arteta on his standing foot with a two-footed lunge just 12 minutes in to this afternoon's London derby at Craven Cottage.

Wenger also ended the game with 10 men after Olivier Giroud caught Stanislav Manolev with a last-minute lunge.

The Gunners boss had no qualms with Giroud's sending off, and that of Sidwell, which he thinks could have caused serious injury to Arteta had it happened a millisecond earlier.

'I think the referee could only give a red card (to Sidwell),' the Arsenal manager said.

'We will see (if Arteta is OK). He played the second-half. I don't know how much damage is done. It is a kick, a bad kick.

'I don't know if he has twisted his ankle or not. In these kind of things it is a question of a fraction of a second.

'If you are fully on your foot at the moment you get it you break your leg. If you ease a bit off maybe that is why he got away with it.'

No, it wasn't just the fact he had made it through to an incredible fourth Champions League semi-final, but more the fact his girlfriend Daniella Semaan had given birth to their first child.

Fabregas played 62 minutes last night as his side reached the last four of the Champions League after a 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain at the Nou Camp saw them go through on away goals.

And it was the former Arsenal midfielder who made way for Lionel Messi with PSG leading 1-0, with the Argentinian changing the game for the hosts.

But even better news was around the corner, and he tweeted: 'Yesterday it was the happiest day of my life, our daugther Lia Fabregas Semaan was born. Both her and Daniella are doing very well.'

The 25-year-old then posted a picture of his newborn daugther grasping his finger, and he'll want to get his hands on his own prize at the end of May, having won just one of the four semi-finals he has been involved in with Arsenal and Barcelona.

Fabregas and his Barcelona teammates will discover who stands in their way of another Champions League final tomorrow, with the draw for the semi-finals taking place in Nyon at 11am BST.

Gareth Bale has said Tottenham can keep fighting on two fronts until the end of the season, claiming Champions League football for next season and challenging for the Europa League.

Spurs sit in third in the Premier League, five points ahead of north London rivals Arsenal in fifth, but have played a game more than the Gunners.

They also host Basel in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday, but talisman Bale believes the togetherness in the squad will see them through.

'We are a very close group as a team. At some places there's little groups here and little groups there but we have got a great team spirit and we want to take that into the rest of the season,' Bale told Eurosport.

'The main thing for us is that we don’t get carried away. We're comfortably able to finish fourth in the league and competing for third – we've got to take it game by game.

'We can push on in the Europa League as well against Basle. Our away form has been very good – we showed that against Lyon. We want to do as well as we can in both competitions.'

Bale's stunning strike against Swansea in Spurs' 2-1 win at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday was his 22nd for Spurs in all competitions this season, prompting some to brand him as one of the best in the world.

'Ronaldo and Messi have set the standard as the best players in the world, and everyone wants to play like them' said Bale.

'Year by year I'm improving and I can still improve.'

Rafa Benitez insists Chelsea won't be looking over their shoulders and instead believes Manchester City can be caught in the final games of the season.

The Blues are four points adrift of City ahead of their trip to Southampton on Saturday.

Southampton meanwhile are engrossed in their survival battle. four points above the drop, with just nine games of the season remaining.

'I would like to see us reduce the
gap,' said Benitez. 'They (City) will be concerned like we are with
Tottenham, Arsenal and Everton.

'The
main things are that you are a team. We are playing very good football,
so if you keep the momentum going I won't be worried about the other
teams but watching Manchester City.'

The Chelsea manager confirmed that captain John Terry would be available for selection this weekend.

'He has been training and doing well.
I am very pleased with him,' Benitez added. 'He is training every day
and improving his fitness.

'But we’ve got nine games in four days, he can’t play every game. That goes for all the players.'

Fernando Torres was among the Chelsea players left behind in international week after he missed out on selection to the Spain squad for their qualifiers against Finland and France.

'He has been training harder,' said Benitez. 'Spain has a lot of good players so it’s normal he can be left out of the list.

'He has been working very hard. Not just Fernando, but all the players want to prove themselves. Strikers want to score goals, but for me it is also what he does for the team.'

Jack Wilshere has been ruled out of Arsenal's Barclays Premier League clash with Reading on Saturday.

The Arsenal midfielder hasn't played for the North London outfit since he injured his ankle in their defeat at Tottenham earlier this month.

Theo Walcott, who picked up a pelvic muscle tear on international duty, will also miss the visit of the relegation-threatened club this weekend.

'Wilshere is still out,' said Wenger. 'Walcott is an accident that could have happened.'

The Arsenal boss also insisted he had no issue with England manager Roy Hodgson.

'When it’s competitive for England, like it was in the last two games, the manager has to pick his best team,' added Wenger.

'There's no ideal way when your
international manger is under pressure to deliver. There can be
complications between the two medical departments – because you can send
a player who is half-injured and they still play, so it is about
communication. But we have a good relationship with England.'

Arsenal host Reading on Saturday four
points adrift of rivals Tottenham having played one game less, and
despite the injury concerns at Arsenal, manager Arsene Wenger remains
confident the Gunners will qualify for the Champions League.

'There are nine games to go, five at
home and four away, and with the form we showed at Bayern Munich and
Swansea, I think we have a very good chance of finishing in the top
four.

'We have a special desire to be together at this club. This is a good opportunity for us and we want to grab this chance.'

Reading will arrive at the Emirates
seven points adrift of safety and under a new regime after former
Southampton boss Nigel Adkins was appointed earlier this week.

'We may play a team who are fighting
not to go down, but we fight to get in the top four so those games are
just as important for us, too,' added Wenger.

With Gareth Bale in their ranks, Wales need little help in the attacking department. But having conceded 12 goals in just five World Cup qualifying matches, it is perhaps no surprise Chris Coleman has just him some hired help in the shape of former Arsenal and England defender Sol Campbell.

The towering defender announced his retirement from playing earlier this year and revealed that he would begin earning his coaching badges.
