Diego Arismendi contract terminated at Stoke

2.6m Uruguayan misfit Arismendi leaves Stoke after playing FIVE games

Stoke City have terminated the contract of Uruguyan midfielder Diego Arismendi by mutual consent.

The 24-year-old only made five appearances for the first team after joining in 2009 from Club Nacional for 2.6million.

The Potters' chief executive Tony Scholes said: 'It has been an incredibly frustrating time for everyone because he came over here with such high hopes of making a name for himself in English football, but it clearly hasn't worked out that way for him.

'His contract with the club would have come to an end next summer, but with him not in our 25 man Premier League squad and little prospect of another loan move, it was in the interests of both parties for us to terminate his agreement now.

'Diego will be returning to Uruguay immediately, so we would like to wish him all the best in finding a new club to get his career up and running again.'

The South American had three loan spells during his time here, at Brighton, Barnsley and Huddersfield.

But perhaps he was best known in England off the field, for being branded a noise pest by his neighbour Dr Muhammad Khan in 2010.

The doctor complained that Arismendi regularly played loud music until the early morning and it even sounded like he was playing football in his flat.

Khan said he had no option but to move out, although after being made aware of the complaints Arismendi said: 'I don't think I am being noisy.'

Valencia 1 Stoke 0 (agg 2-0): Jonas strikes to end Potters' Europa League campaign

Valencia saw off the challenge of Stoke to advance to the last 16 of the Europa League courtesy of a comfortable aggregate victory over Tony Pulis' side.

The Welsh manager – who courted controversy for naming just 15 players in his squad at the Mestalla – saw chances of progression severely damaged after Jonas struck in the 24th minute.

Still reeling from the narrow first leg loss at the Britannia, Stoke failed to trouble Unai Emery's side and can look forward to concentrating on the Premier League and the FA Cup.

Besiktas 3 Stoke 1: Potters knocked off top spot in Europa League Group E

Besiktas 3 Stoke 1: Potters knocked off top spot after Upson sees red in Istanbul

Stoke”s second string crashed to a defeat in the cacophonous Inonu Stadium that saw Tony Pulis”s side relinquish top spot in Europa League Group E to their conquerors, Besiktas.

The Potters had already qualified for the Europa League knockout stages before tonight, but their much-changed side looked up for a daunting task in Istanbul when Ricardo Fuller handed them the lead after 29 minutes with a wickedly deflected shot.

The home side were always the more threatening but were unable to force an equaliser. But the game changed when Matthew Upson was sent off for bringing down Hugo Almeida when clean through in the penalty area.

Manuel Fernandes scored the resulting penalty and from then on the result appeared a foregone conclusion as Mustafa Pektemek headed in from a corner and then subsistute Edu blasted home a brilliant third.

More to follow.

All the latest from the Europa League

17.54: Stoke boss Tony Pulis leaves winger Jermaine Pennant on the bench for tonight”s Europa League clash with Besiktas amid reports of a rift between the two.

Pulis only brought 15 players with him to Istanbul, none of whom started the 2-1 Barclays Premier League victory over Tottenham on Sunday, but opts to leave Pennant, who has missed the last two matches, on the bench along with goalkeeper Carlo Nash and academy products Michael Clarkson and Lucas Dawson.

A point for the already-qualified Potters in the intimidating Inonu Stadium would see them top the group, and their hopes are boosted by the absence of both Ricardo Quaresma and Simao in the hosts” line-up.

17.51: So a draw suiting both means this will be a foregone conclusion right

I disagree, on the basis that a for a few Stoke players this is a chance to put themselves in the frame for a first team spot, or a chance to put themselves in the window for the January sales next month.

17.48: This may be a kick-about for Stoke but Besiktas still need a point to qualify this evening.

Dynamo Kiev sit three points behind and have to win at home to Maccabi Tel-Aviv to even have a chance of qualifying…

17.45: And don”t forget you can keep-up-to-date with all the goals from games involving ANY Premier League side with our live goals service on twitter, which updates the moment the ball crosses the line (give or take a second or two).

17.42: Of course, Fulham are also in action tonight when they host Odense later on, but there is some bad news already for them as keeper Mark Schwarzer has been ruled out for six weeks.

17.39: It”s a completely different team to the one that started the win against Tottenham and one that also has a starting place for Wilson Palacios.

For some reason it hasn”t happened for the Honduras midfielder since his summer move from Spurs. Another with a chance to prove himself tonight.

17.36: Big news with Diego Arismendi starting. He was the big signing that never was when he joined two years ago and after just one sub appearance this season (in this competition), he gets his chance. Let”s see what he has got.

17.33: Right on cue, the line-ups from Istanbul:

Besiktas v Stoke
Besiktas: Recber, Hilbert, Sivok, Korkmaz, Koybasi, Ernst, Uysal, Holosko, Fernandes, Kavlak, Almeida. Subs: Gonen, Toraman, Pektemek, Dag, Julio Alves, Sidnei, De Oliveira.

Stoke: Begovic, Wilkinson, Upson, Diao, Higginbotham, Delap, Palacios, Arismendi, Jones, Jerome, Fuller. Subs: Nash, Pennant, Clarkson, Dawson.

Referee: Marcin Borski (Poland)

17.30: What a season it has been for Stoke in this competition so far. I”ll be honest, I looked at their group that contains Dynamo Kiev, Maccabi Tel-Aviv and Besiktas and feared the worst for them when the draw was made.

The fact they have proved me wrong to qualify with ease into the last 32 has impressed me, the fact they can seal top spot tonight I think shows just how dangerous they could be in this tournament. Team news on the way.
