The fervent speculation over which players will take the field for the biggest Champions League match of the season – perhaps the decade – has already begun over in Madrid.

And Spanish newspaper Marca claim they have Jose Mourinho's selection to take on Manchester United at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

Of course, the Special One will take no chances and name his strongest eleven for the round of 16, first leg match as Real seek to build a useful lead to take to Old Trafford.

I pick you! Jose Mourinho will have no place for Luka Modric, Michael Essien or Kaka in his starting XI to face Manchester United in the Champions League showdown on Wednesday night

And the paper says the chosen players will be: Diego Lopez, Alvaro Arbeloa, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Fabio Coentrao, Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira, Angel di Maria, Mesut Ozil, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

Marca claim that Mourinho will restore Pepe, Ozil, Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira and Benzema after leaving them out of the side that beat Sevilla 4-1 at home on Saturday night.

It means Michael Essien, Raul Albiol, Luka Modric, Kaka and Gonzalo Higuain will likely make way.

For the chop: Luka Modric played for Real in their 4-1 win over Sevilla at the weekend, but he's likely to be dropped for the visit of United

Pepe took an important step towards his return from ankle surgery with a 25-minute cameo against Sevilla.

The Portugal international has been back in training for 10 days and his cause is further helped by news that Raphael Varane, the other possible partner for Sergio Ramos, is struggling for fitness.

Marca believe Mourinho may consider playing Essien at right-back and shifting Arbeloa over to the left-hand side – as in the recent Copa del Rey 'Clasico' with Barcelona.

The rest of the team is set in stone, with Real not short of attacking firepower with Khedira and Alonso in the middle of the park and Ozil, Di Maria, Ronaldo and Benzema beyond.

Cristiano Ronaldo fired an ominous
warning to former club Manchester United with a hat-trick as Real Madrid
warmed up for their Champions League showdown against the Red Devils
with a 4-1 Primera Division win over Sevilla at the Bernabeu.

Matches against Sevilla have proved
rich pickings for Ronaldo and it was no different tonight as he followed
up Karim Benzema's 18th-minute opener with goals in the 26th, 46th and
59th minutes as Madrid sauntered to victory .

That took his tally of hat-tricks for the Spanish giants to an incredible 20 before he was replaced in the 63rd minute as Jose Mourinho opted to wrap his trump card in cotton wool ahead of Wednesday's visit of United in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 clash.

Granada, who stunned Mourinho's men last weekend with a 1-0 win courtesy of a Ronaldo own goal, continued where they left off against the champions this evening as they trounced Deportivo La Coruna 3-0 at the Riazor.

Carlos Marchena's own goal on the stroke of half-time set the visitors on their way and Ighalo's strike six minutes after the restart doubled their advantage.

Depor then missed a number of chances to get themselves back into the game and their night was summed up when they conceded a dubious penalty – converted by Guilherme Siqueira – in the last minute and saw Manuel Pablo sent off.

'For Madrid every game is special, but on Wednesday we have to be ready to meet the challenge,' said Madrid defender Pepe, who went on late for his first action since surgery on his right ankle in early January.

'Cristiano is playing well. He is working hard and we need him to keep it up.'

Steven Gerrard could get his wish to
be reunited with Xabi Alonso after the Real Madrid midfielder cast
doubt over his future.

Captain Gerrard

the chance, would be Alonso.

And Spain international Alonso, 30, is considering a return to the Premier League after a contract stand-off with Real, reports the Daily Mirror.

Alonso is keen to renew his current deal which runs until 2014 but the Spanish champions are unwilling to start talks until the summer.

Real Madrid are trying the same tactic with the likes of Angel Di Maria, Arbeloa and Raul Albiol.
