Salomon Kalou will tell Chelsea he wants to play in a central role as it emerged AC Milan are targeting a move for the forward.
Kalou – who is out of contract in the summer – has enjoyed a resurgence under Roberto Di Matteo after being marginalised under ex-boss Andre Villas-Boas.
The Ivory Coast international was virtually resigned to leaving Chelsea during Villas-Boas’ reign but his increased first-team chances has prompted a rethink.
Halfway there: Salomon Kalou grabbed a vital away goal for Chelsea
Talks over a new Stamford Bridge contract had previously stalled – but both parties will reopen discussions before the end of the season.
And Sportsmail understands Kalou will express his desire to be deployed in more of a central role at Stamford Bridge when talks take place.
Even though he has been used largely as a wide player during his time at Chelsea, Kalou sees his future as a centre-forward and will make that clear during negotiations.
The 26-year-old is not the only player frustrated at playing on the Blues’ flank, forward Daniel Sturridge would also prefer to play through the middle despite being utilised on the wing.
Heart: But the Ivorian wants to be in the middle of the Chelsea attack, rather than out wide
Whether or not Di Matteo stays on as full-time manager is likely to have a bearing on Kalou’s decision given his revival under the Italian.
And if he does decide not to renew his contract then the San Siro could be his next stop.
Sportsmail has learned AC Milan have expressed a firm interest in Kalou – who is free to discuss a summer Bosman move with a foreign club.
