Roberto Mancini hopes to beat Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to the signing of Lille star Eden Hazard.

Hazard is set to be one of the most sought-after players in the summer transfer window with Spurs, Real Madrid, Milan and Barcelona are also keen on landing the 35million-rated Belgian playmaker.

But Mancini admitted that he really wants 21-year-old Hazard.

The Italian said: 'I like Hazard a lot. He’s a good player, he’s young and he would do great things in our team. Given his technical qualities City would be the perfect destination for him.

'I know him and have been following him for a long time. He’s a player a lot of teams want.'

Mancini watched Hazard last month when Lille faced Valenciennes.

Manchester United boss Ferguson also watched Lille — although he insisted he was not there just to spy on Hazard.

Ferguson said: 'There were another two or three players we wanted to see.

'Hazard is a very good player but there are very good players in Europe.

'He has excellent qualities. He’s very quick over the first 10 yards.'
