Alex Pearce has played every minute of league football for Reading over the past 13 months. But he stood out on Sunday as the only starting outfield player to wear predominantly black boots.

Andre Villas-Boas persisted with having two holding midfielders although, as against Norwich and West Brom, it seemed excessive. Mousa Dembele looked much more comfortable when pushed further forward and allowed to make those surging runs.
