Patrick Vieira believes Arsenal's players are lacking the self-belief required to win silverware.

The Gunners legend, who made more than 300 appearances for the club between 1996 and 2005, lifted their last trophy – the FA Cup – eight years ago.

Well off the pace in the Barclays Premier League and dumped out of the FA Cup by Blackburn on Saturday, their last hope of ending their trophy drought this season comes in the Champions League.

And tonight they take on the formidable Bayern Munich in the first leg of their round of 16 tie as they hope to advance in the competition.

Vieira, now Football Development Executive at Manchester City, said the players need to trust in their 'fantastic' ability to start winning trophies again.

'With Arsenal, it's always up and down. When Arsenal have a good day, they can beat any team in the world,' he told FA TV.

'But maybe they lack consistency to win silverware. When you look at the Arsenal starting XI they are fantastic players, but they may need to believe in themselves more that they can win something.

'Maybe that's why they haven't achieved the height of their potential.'
