QPR boss Warnock blasts 'starstruck refs' over Barton red card
Neil Warnock has turned his rage on
‘starstruck’ referees and ‘invisible’ FA disciplinarians after Joey
Barton’s appeal against a red card was rejected.
Barton, sent off against Norwich on
Monday, will miss three games as Queens Park Rangers try to end a run of
eight without a win, starting with an awkward FA Cup tie at MK Dons on
Can't believe it: Neil Warnock used his press conference on Thursday to hit out over Joey Barton's treatment
Warnock said he was ‘disgusted’ by the inconsistencies of the system and claimed Chelsea’s Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole should have been dismissed on the same day as Barton.
‘I’m not surprised our appeal failed but it’s difficult to accept,’ fumed the Rangers boss, after a three-man FA commission upheld the red card shown by referee Neil Swarbrick on the advice of linesman David Richardson. It came after Barton went nose-to-nose with Bradley Johnson.

GRAHAM POLL'S OFFICIAL LINE
Referees are never consciously starstruck but they are often aware of the wider ramifications of their decisions.
Officials know there is a different
reaction to them sending off John Terry compared with the reaction to them dismissing, say, Grant Holt of Norwich.
I believed that I was never starstruck. I also think the same of the current crop of Premier League referees.
However, the statistics probably do not back up those beliefs.
The evidence will show bigger teams will have benefited from cautious decision-making, because referees are eager to avoid controversy.
‘It’s farcical really. This is the worst
case I’ve ever seen. I feel really let down that three invisible people
can look at that incident and not look at the linesman. Why didn’t he
put his flag up immediately and keep it up If it’s violent conduct you
flag and you don’t move. You don’t let the game carry on.
‘I don’t think he saw it. He’s
guessed with the reaction of Bradley Johnson and Grant Holt in his ear. I
don’t think, 100 per cent hand on heart, he knows what he saw or he
would’ve flagged straightaway.
‘There’s not even a report from the
linesman, who’s allegedly seen this, to the commission. All there is are
two lines from the referee saying his linesman told him. I’m so
disgusted by it.’
Warnock phoned referees’ chief Mike Riley to complain and will demand answers from the FA.
He added: ‘Frank Lampard commits a
horrendous challenge (against Wolves) and gets a yellow card. Am I
surprised If that had been Joey Barton or Karl Henry would it have been
yellow or red’ He added: ‘It’s like they’re starstruck. I thought
Ashley Cole should have been booked twice. If that had been my player I
think he would have got booked twice.’
Special measures: Frank Lampard was treated leniently for a foul on the same weekend, according to Warnock
