The Mail on Sunday’s Mark Pain has been crowned the Vauxhall Home Nations Football Photographer of the Year for 2011.

His portfolio of England pictures was said by the judges of the new award to convey the ‘excitement, drama and passion of this sport at international level’ as he beat entrants from across the rest of the UK.

Chris Hornbuckle, Vauxhall head of sponsorship, said; ‘We were stunned by the quality of the entrants and the substantial interest our awards have created within the profession. Mark was the unanimous choice. He captured the very essence of international football.’

Pain said: ‘It’s a great honour, and I have to say a big thank you to Vauxhall for introducing this competition. I know that it has stimulated a great deal of interest.’
