Hugo Lloris faces more frustration at Tottenham as Andre Villas-Boas plans to leave him out of the Capital One Cup game at Carlisle.

Villas-Boas sees the third-round tie as a good opportunity to involve Carlo Cudicini and Heurelho Gomes, who have not featured this season.

Lloris has played only once — last week’s Europa League match against Lazio — and would have been hoping to start.

Villas-Boas is expected to rest several players ahead of the trip to Manchester United on Saturday.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto has seen a second knee specialist in the hope of avoiding surgery to clear up a problem which has seen him miss the last three games.

Jake Livermore has had a hernia operation and will be out for another three weeks.
