Leighton Baines has set Everton a top-four target, citing Monday's visitors Newcastle as an example of what can be achieved in the Premier League.

Everton made it into the Champions League places in 2005 and England full-back Baines insists they can go at least one better than the two fifth places they have managed since.

He said: 'We have to have that belief
and have something to strive for. We can use teams like Newcastle as
inspiration to do that.

'Tottenham did it a couple of seasons ago. We look at those sides and realise it isn't beyond you.

'There is a core group of players who
do know what the club is all about and in the last couple of windows
especially, the manager has added some real quality.

'There's competition now and that will improve us.'

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, who
starts a two-match touchline ban for pushing an assistant referee, is
looking for something special from Hatem Ben Arfa.

'He is probably our best player at the moment,' he said.
