Jose Mourinho has given up on winning the Spanish title after watching his Real Madrid side fall 13 points behind Barcelona.
Real were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Espanyol at the weekend as their great rivals Barcelona hammered Atletico Madrid 4-1.
Mourinho said: 'Thirteen points is too big a gap for us to make up but what we have to do is play every game. We mustn't concern ourselves with being first, second or third. We have to be stronger.
Up against it: Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho watched his side struggle against Espanyol
'I've never been in a position like this, losing so many points. We'll try to finish the season the best we can. We will fight for titles but the league seems impossible. We have to keep going because we are Real Madrid.'
The former Chelsea boss added in Marca: 'Just the name Real Madrid makes you fight for every game.
Realistic: Mourino admits there is too big a gap to table-topping Barcelona
'You have to get on with it without
any cheap philosophising or silliness, with the personal pride of
wanting the best for yourself and for your club.'
Lionel Messi scored two goals for the seventh consecutive match he has started as Barca took advantage of Real's slip.
The Catalans are nine points clear of Atletico at the top with Real back in third.
