Arum warns Mayweather that rival Pacquiao won't fight him until November
Floyd Mayweather Jnr has been warned he faces a wait until November to take on Manny Pacquiao in boxing's eagerly-anticipated first $100million fight.
The pair, widely considered to be the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, appeared close to an agreement to meet in May after Mayweather had taken to Twitter to call out his rival.
But Pacquiao’s camp are preparing their man for a bout on June 9 to take advantage of a new 38,000 seat arena in Las Vegas against one of four candidates — Juan Manuel Marquez, Timothy Bradley, Miguel Cotto and Lamont Peterson.
Delay: Floyd Mayweather, who on Wednesday donated $100,000 to a breast cancer charity, faces a wait to fight Manny Pacquiao
That rules out a fight with Mayweather as the WBC welterweight champion will be serving a 90-day jail term for assaulting his ex-girlfriend.
Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter, said: ‘To be safe, they needed until the end of May to get it done [the stadium].
‘Economically, it’s a problem that Floyd created. The amount that would be lost by moving it up to May 5th is enormous. The fight is not going to happen on May 5th. We’ll do the fight in November. There is no real magic in doing it in May.’
Arum further attempted to rile Mayweather by saying he has himself to blame for booking the MGM Grand for May 5 and suggested he'd lied to the judge to delay his prison sentence.
Arum added: 'I think they lied and said Pacquiao was ready to fight him.
Show time: Manny Pacquiao is scheduled to compete again on June 9 in Las Vegas
'Now they are saying the judge ordered them to fight on May 5 Was the MGM behind this
'If the judge says you have to
surrender yourself on June 1st, what does it matter to the judge if you
fight on May 5th or two weeks later'
Meanwhile, Mayweather, who has been relentless in his pursuit of Pacquiao, insists he only has eyes for the WBO welterweight champion.
‘People around the world are anticipating a fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao,’ he said.
‘What’s been so unbelievable is that the guy said he agreed to take the random blood and urine tests, so I said, “OK, so now let’s make [the fight] happen. Let’s give the fans and the people what they want to see.”
Pulling the strings: Mayweather has described promoter Bob Arum as an obstacle to his fight with Pacquiao
‘People all around the world want to see Mayweather versus Pacquiao and that’s a fight that I really, really want. I’m the best in the sport and I’m going to continue to show the world I’m the best.
‘There is no fight I want more than the Manny Pacquiao fight. I guess he said he agreed to fight.
'The only thing that is stopping this fight right now, that I truly believe is stopping the fight, is Bob Arum.’
