Sammon nets FA reprieve as Wigan striker sees Old Trafford red card rescinded
Wigan striker Conor Sammon will be available to face Stoke in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday after the Football Association upheld his claim for wrongful dismissal.
The 25-year-old was shown a straight red card by referee Phil Dowd during the first half of Wigan’s 5-0 defeat by Manchester United on Monday for catching Michael Carrick in the face with his hand, despite the contact appearing to be accidental.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez described the decision as an injustice and the FA agreed, meaning Sammon will now not have to serve a three-match ban.
Martinez welcomed the decision by the regulatory commission, saying: “We thank the panel for their decision, which is the correct one. We now need to draw a line under the matter and move on.
“I am delighted to have Conor available for the next three matches. It would have been really unfair for him to share the frustrating feeling that he had on Monday for another three games after doing nothing wrong.”
