Celtic"s Daniel Majstorovic vows to return stronger

Celtic's Majstorovic ruled out of Euro 2012 after training ground clash with Ibrahimovic

Celtic defender Daniel Majstorovic has vowed to resume his playing career despite being ruled out for up to eight months with a ruptured cruciate ligament.

The 34-year-old defender injured his left knee in a freak accident as Sweden trained ahead of Wednesday's friendly in Croatia and will suffer the heartbreak of missing Euro 2012.

Majstorovic must now wait to discover whether he has also played his last game for Celtic as his current contract expires at the end of the season, with no extension yet agreed.

The former AEK Athens centre-half
will miss the remainder of the current campaign as Neil Lennon’s side
look to tie up the SPL title as soon as possible.

Majstorovic has, however, vowed to return to the pitch — whether that is with the Parkhead club or new employers.

‘It’s a bitch,’ said Majstorovic.
‘I’ve been looking forward to the European Championships for a long time
and it hurts, of course, to realise that I will miss it.

‘But I will do everything to get back
as soon as possible. I feel I still have a lot to offer on the football
field and do not want to give up my career just for this.

‘I have great respect for what is a serious situation and it will require a hard job to come back.

‘Right now, I just want to make sure I
get proper treatment as soon as possible and then start the job of
rehabilitation. I will follow the national team closely and wish them
all the luck in the European Championships.’

Majstorovic was hurt when team-mate
Anders Svensson fell over his outstretched leg following a collision
with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He then walked off the training field before
being taken for a scan. Sweden team doctor Leif Sward later confirmed he
expected Majstorovic to have a recovery period of around eight months.

The centre-half missed eight weeks
earlier in the season after suffering a gruesome cheekbone fracture and
national boss Erik Hamren admitted he was heartbroken at this latest,
crushing setback.

‘It is painful for us but more
especially for Daniel,’ said Hamren. ‘He has had enough negative things
happen this year. When the incident happened I did not think it was that
bad because Daniel did not say a word. But it was.

‘It is one of the saddest training
sessions I have ever had. He is an amazing person to have in the group
and that makes it even worse.’

Parkhead boss Lennon had spoken last
December about the possibility of Majstorovic being offered a new deal.
Since then, however, Celtic have signed Polish defender Jaroslaw Fojut
from Slask Wroclaw on a pre-contract agreement for next season.

A Celtic statement read: ‘Celtic
defender Daniel Majstorovic has ruptured the cruciate ligament in his
left knee during a training session with the Swedish national side
today.

‘He was on international duty for
Sweden, along with fellow Celt Mikael Lustig, for the friendly match
against Croatia in Zagreb this Wednesday.

‘Daniel will stay in Sweden for the
immediate future and will have an operation there soon. Celtic’s medical
team will be in close liaison with the Swedish FA medical team to
ensure that Daniel receives the best of care. Unfortunately, he will be
out long term.

‘Everyone at Celtic wishes Daniel a speedy recovery from injury.’
