Sharp joins Saints in 3m deal but Upson snubs loan switch

Southampton have signed Doncaster striker Billy Sharp but have been rebuffed in a loan bid for Stoke defender Matthew Upson.

Sharp signed on Monday after a 3million fee was agreed but former England defender Upson was unwilling to join and Nigel Adkins is considering a loan move for Stoke's Danny Collins instead.

Sharp, 25, had been offered a new
contract by Doncaster after Leicester tried to sign him earlier this
month but he was finally swayed by Southampton's ambitious plans.

Sharp said: 'I'm delighted. It has
been a long time coming, but I am delighted to get it done, and now I am
just looking forward to getting on the pitch and showing the fans what I
can do.'
