Barry Hawkins won the first professional snooker event of his 16-year career after he defeated Peter Ebdon 9-3 in the Australian Goldfields Open.

The 33-year-old Londoner has featured in the world's top 16 in the past but posted the highlight of his career in some style.

After taking the first frame, Ebdon
failed to pot a ball for over an hour as Hawkins cruised to a 4-1 lead,
before sealing victory with four unanswered frames in the evening
session.

He said: 'It's so tough, just to win one is an achievement. To be the last one standing is unbelievable.'

Hawkins takes home a cheque for $A70,000 (71,600) and moves up three places to 20th in the world rankings.
