Wenger weighs up move for Newcastle and Swansea target Mariappa after Spurs show
In demand: Watford's Adrian Mariappa
Arsenal are poised to enter the race for Watford defender Adrian Mariappa.
Arsene Wenger has holes to plug in his leaky defence, highlighted in Sunday's dramatic 3-2 victory over Aston Villa in the FA Cup.
Newcastle and Swansea are leading the chase for the 25-year-old defender, but Wenger is ready to move after having Mariappa watched during Watford's narrow defeat to Spurs in the FA Cup last Friday night, according to The Sun.
Watford have rejected a 2million offer from the Magpies earlier this week and may be willing to do business at 4m.
But that could be beyond both Newcastle and Swansea's budget, leaving the way open for Arsenal to pounce.
Mariappa can play at centre-back or right-back and would provide competition for the first-choice members of the squad.
